I think this is one of his greatest songs. I can’t listen without tearing up because I can relate to it 100%.

I would go as far as to say this is his best song ever. Although Souvenir is beautiful. I am certainly not knocking his great catalogue of amazing songs but this ballad is not just one of Billy's best but one of an entire century.

Billy once said it was one of his favorites, alongside "She's Right On Time," "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant," "You May Be Right," and "Vienna." That's some great company!

I sang a version of this in choir. I enjoyed the song, but didn't really connect with it. And then at a perfect moment in my life, it came up on shuffle. I was on the way to work, and had to pull onto a side street and let it all out. It was the King's Singer's version. If you haven't heard it, you should check it out.

Billy Joel - one of the best singer-songwriters of all-time. None of his pop compositions ever sounds generic, while not to mention he also backs it up with incredible piano and vocal skills as well. Respect! :)

This, Summer, Highland Falls, Vienna and Where's the Orchestra sound the best these days. Billy's got nostalgia in his voice and these songs to me are the most honestly performed. I think Lullabye (Goodnight, My Angel) wouldn't sound bad either!

WORDS by BILL JOEL: In every heart there is a room A sanctuary safe and strong To heal the wounds from lovers past Until a new one comes along I spoke to you in cautious tones You answered me with no pretense And still I feel I said too much My silence is my self defense And every time I've held a rose It seems I only felt the thorns And so it goes, and so it goes And so will you, soon, I suppose But if my silence made you leave Then that would be my worst mistake So I will share this room with you And you can have this heart to break And this is why my eyes are closed It's just as well for all I've seen And so it goes, and so it goes And you're the only one who knows So I would choose to be with you That's if the choice were mine to make But you can make decisions too And you can have this heart to break And so it goes, and so it goes And you're the only one who knows

I am glad you got round to it. You would have missed one of the most beautiful piano ballads of the 1900's. It really is an impressive creation. I remember when I bought Storm Front on cassette the day it was released. This song was the last on the album and I knew then it was remarkable. Billy originally wrote it in 1983 so for a great song he sat on it for quite a while.

Mr. Joel explained to Howard Stern that this was a very difficult song to write because his heart was broken. and he said it was his 'Top Song' - not sure what that means, but it is probably significant in some way.
