Chorus:
But if my silence made you leave
Then that would be my worst mistake
So I will share this room with you
And you can have this heart to break
And this is why my eyes are closed
It's just as well for all I've seen
And so it goes, and so it goes
And you're the only one who knows

My dad showed me this song when I was very young, but I never really cared for Billy until a few years ago when my dad passed. I looked through his old Vinyls and found a little gem named "Storm Front." I cried for a good while. I sang this song at one of my choir concerts in high school for him, and cried again when I went to my first concert, and the crowd sang this song into the open night sky. I love Billy Joel now, almost as much as I love my dad. Thanks Billy, thanks for reminding me of an old friend, and an even better father.

That's why I'm here now, listening to this song. Of all the many episodes of This is Us, who knew that the one about Miguel would be the most gut wrenching of all. The deeply meaningful words of this song was so apropos. Rebecca and Miguel gave their hearts to each other when no one else approved but in the end, it didn't matter. Miguel never left her side. And so it goes, and so it goes And so will you, soon, I suppose...

Hey hello, I just turned 20 and I'm finding it hard to be vulnerable because I don't see how it's worth it. Can I ask for some advise? This is my situation: I don't think i have a problem with being vulnerable if I know that a person cares for me. The thing is that I usually don't believe people care, I guess I'm kind of cynical, although not 100%. And for that reason I don't see why it's a good idea to "rise again and open my heart again to love". I mean, if nobody cares, there's no point in hoping for love and getting hurt for something that doesn't exist - you'll just be hurt for nothing. If I may ask for your thoughts and advise on this matter, it would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

Yep. This lyric is one that stands out not only in this song, but it is one that stands out for me in all music. It is one of the best lyrics I can think of in any song. The vulnerability of love -- captured in a single 8-word line.

Since hearing this song for the first time it’s had a profound affect on me. It took me awhile to grasp the song’s concept but all I had to do was look inward. Love is good, it’s bad, it’s indifferent. When it works it’s invincible. When it doesn’t it’s crippling. Everybody just wants to be loved for who they are. That’s it. Love is about exposing yourself to someone else, warts and all. Taking that leap of faith. Or I should say believing in it enough to take that first step in the first place.

I was listening to this when my girlfriend came in distraught that our beautiful cat ‘Renwee’ had died... He was beautiful, intelligent, and a completely bonkers little guy and we adored him so much. We will never forget him, this track will always help us remember that place and time and just how special he was. It’s not always the human interaction, the loss of our furry, feathered and scaly friends are equally traumatic. We planted a ‘Renwee’ tree soon after we lost him, the sad thing is that it is now almost as tall as my wife, but the positive thing is that we still love and miss him just as much.... we will never forget Renwee and we thank Billy for playing such an important role. I hand not heard this song in a long time...I heard it this week on my favorite show " This is Us". I called my eyes shut! I love this song, first heard it in Onitsha Nigeria when on my way to the Cathedral to get married. My soon to be husband was driving. He stopped at a store to buy cigarettes, and kept car running. This song came on. I don't know if it was a tape, or radio...way back in 1992. I listened to the lyrics. I remembered my husband to be did say to me many times, " you gonna leave me". I never understood why he felt that way! Listening to the lyrics, I thought to my self he must have got the idea from the song. We did get married, but marriage didn't last. Good thing that came from our marriage was our handsome 2 son's. We have 3 beautiful grandchildren from our youngest son. Everytime I hear this song I cry uncontrollably. I love the song, like I loved my husband back then in Ontisha, Nigeria...." And so it goes"❤️🌴🏝️🌴 So, every time

I have loved Billy Joel since I was a teenager and heard his album. "The Stranger." Yet I had not heard this song until recently with the limited Billy Joel channel on Sirius FM. I had to stop the car to listen to every word and note. It is so very hauntingly true in lyrics and in minor chords. With every love, you risk a broken heart. Are you strong enough to take the risk? Sometimes yes, sometimes no. This has now become my favorite Billy Joel song. I think he is a master musician in all ways.

“And every time I’ve held a rose it seems I’ve only felt the thorns”… that line always breaks my heart. Joel wrote this after a breakup yet the words obtain to myriad human events. The melody, itself, owes so much to traditional Celtic folk tunes that always have a touch of sadness about them. So, this choice for “ Miguel’s Story” was a touch of genius.

In every heart there is a room A sanctuary safe and strong To heal the wounds from lovers past Until a new one comes along I spoke to you in cautious tones You answered me with no pretense And still I feel I said too much My silence is my self defense And every time I've held a rose It seems I only felt the thorns And so it goes, and so it goes And so will you, soon, I suppose But if my silence made you leave Then that would be my worst mistake So I will share this room with you And you can have this heart to break And this is why my eyes are closed It's just as well for all I've seen And so it goes, and so it goes And you're the only one who knows So I would choose to be with you That's if the choice were mine to make But you can make decisions too And you can have this heart to break And so it goes, and so it goes And you're the only one who knows

The simplicity of this song really is magnificent. That is the gift Billy Joel brings us. Thank you Billy. A true poet.

I'm not crying, but tears appeared at the end as the audience showed their appreciation.

I had never heard this song before but immediately recognized it as a Billy Joel song and his voice. It is beautifully sad and so true. I heard it on This is Us and looked it up on KZbin. Man.. he does so much with his voice and a piano. Beautiful send-off for Miguel.

When I heard the first chords and the first words, I knew it was Billy Joel, though I had never heard this song before. So beautiful, and a bittersweet tribute to Miguel Rivas. The writers and producers have done a wonderful job with choosing music for this series.

The way he chose to voice these chords with that dissonance is beautiful.
