my personal favorite Billy Joel song. I like it becuase becuase of its "I don't give a fuck" attitude, plus the fine chord progression, riff, and melody. it borrows heavy from 50s rock, as many of his hits do.

One of the rockinest songs ever to usher in the 1980's and boy we needed it as the economy was an utter shit storm with wicked inflation, double digit interest rates and lots of unemployment. Joel brilliantly merged a 50's be-bop feel with modern rock and created a masterpiece. Those of us who were teenagers had been grabbing our parents 45's and playing the crap out of them so this song was right up our alley. The tenor sax solo at 1:52 is probably one of the best I can remember and ranks right up there with the sax solo in "The Logical Song" by Supertramp.

LYRICS: What's the matter with the clothes I'm wearing? "Can't you tell that your tie's too wide?" Maybe I should buy some old tab collars? "Welcome back to the age of jive Where have you been hidin' out lately, honey? You can't dress trashy till you spend a lot of money" Everybody's talkin' 'bout the new sound Funny, but it's still rock and roll to me What's the matter with the car I'm driving? "Can't you tell that it's out of style?" Should I get a set of white wall tires? "Are you gonna cruise a miracle mile? Nowadays you can't be too sentimental Your best bet's a true baby-blue Continental" Hot funk, cool punk, even if it's old junk It's still rock and roll to me Oh, it doesn't matter what they say in the papers 'Cause it's always been the same old scene There's a new band in town, but you can't get the sound From a story in a magazine Aimed at your average teen How about a pair of pink sidewinders And a bright orange pair of pants? "Well, you could really be a Beau Brummel, baby If you just give it half a chance Don't waste your money on a new set of speakers You get more mileage from a cheap pair of sneakers" Next phase, new wave, dance craze, anyways It's still rock and roll to me Oh, what's the matter with the crowd I'm seeing? "Don't you know that their out of touch?" Well, should I try to be a straight-A student? "If you are then you think too much Don't you know about the new fashion, honey? All you need are looks and a whole lotta money" It's the next phase, new wave, dance craze, anyways It's still rock and roll to me Everybody's talkin' 'bout the new sound Funny, but it's still rock and roll to me

You are, by my definition, a successful parent. (I am kidding of course but I love hearing this. Too many times I meet teenagers who have never heard of Billy Joel or other legends like James Brown or Janis Joplin or The Who, Rolling Stones, Credence Clearwater Revival, Grand Funk Railroad, Cream, Crosby Stills Nash and Young... I mean you name most legendary bands from the 60s and 70s and even the 80s and these teenagers haven't heard of these bands. WTH?)

This is one of those iconic songs that when I hear it, I am immediately transported back to the summer of 1980. I was a freshman in high school and little did I know at the time that I was embarking on my journey through what I think was 🐐 of all decades! I know there are MANY others in my age group who wholeheartedly agree that the 80's were simply the best time to be a teenager/young adult! I sure wish I could revisit that era. I wouldn't ever come back to the present.

Today we're all nostalgic for the 80s. Well in the early 80s they were feeling a major nostalgia wave for the 50s. Think about this song, Back to the Future, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Happy Days etc. Hell, even Smooth Criminal is a love letter to Fred Astaire. The 80s were so good, they even did the 50s better than the 50s did.

I’m 17 years old, and have a very complicated relationship with my mother. I’ve always been into music, I love music ranging from the 50s to now, my mom not so much. But, my mom loves Billy Joel. So much. We went to a Billy Joel concert at Madison Square garden, and it blew me away, but it also connected me and my mother in a way I never imagined. We don’t get along always, but whenever she starts to get on my nerves, I think about how happy she was at that concert, and it reminds me that she’s human and not all humans are perfect. I love my mom, and I love Billy Joel.

But he does sometimes play them in concert so you sometimes find cell phone recordings on KZbin. In this case it was a song from his first album that didn't make the cut or wasn't ready, so they never sought Joel's permission or tried to release it because they moved onto other things. Not sure where this "home demo" release came from.

Hot funk, cool punk, even if it's old junk It's still rock and roll to me. Oh, it doesn't matter what they say in the papers 'Cause it's always been the same old scene. There's a new band in town But you can't get the sound from a story in a magazine... Aimed at your average teen How about a pair of pink sidewinders And a bright orange pair of pants? You could really be a Beau Brummell baby If you just give it half a chance. Don't waste your money on a new set of speakers, You get more mileage from a cheap pair of sneakers. Next phase, new wave, dance craze, anyways It's still rock and roll to me What's the matter with the crowd I'm seeing? Don't you know that they're out of touch? Should I try to be a straight 'A' student? If you are then you think too much. Don't you know about the new fashion honey? All you need are looks and a whole lotta money. It's the next phase, new wave, dance craze, anyways It's still rock & roll to me. Everybody's talkin' 'bout the new sound Funny, but it's still rock and roll to me

Quite a lot of people, actually. BJ has a reputation for being a popular singer that was never a critical favorite. For me, he's proof that the "critics" need to go find other employment.

I love looking at the videos from the Glass Houses album (which came out in 1980). Something happened to Billy when he turned 30 that made him nuts for a couple years.

Ironically I've always thought this was one of the most punk rock songs ever. Despite the grainy 60s guitar riffs in the opening, and the Rockabilly bridges you'd laugh... But these lyrics were sharp af. Billy started punk, and I see flashes of it on each album since. This song though... is more punk then most punk music. Fucking love it so much.

it's supposed to be like a smeagol and golum conversation, the dual layer voice represents the industry while the singular track is him questioning it.. helps create the effect of the conversation in the lyrics.. it's a dated sound but I honestly like it in this song.

+The Guru of Greatness It is a weird effect. Besides having the voice overlay, there's also no reverb on those parts. That's why it has that feeling of being too present +Enigmatism415 is talking about. It is still an awesome song, and I bet it's one of those ones that's even better live.

Note that Billy is singing a live lead vocal track to the pre-recorded studio version... he refused to lip-synch it... I'd be honored if some Billy Joel fans would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of his classics ALLENTOWN and VIENNA on my YT channel in tribute to the boss. Live acoustic with no digital editing. Peace and stay safe.

I remember how cool and fresh this sounded in 1980; sort of a departure from 80's. It's a good song but it sounds retro now. Billy Joel was putting out some massive hits back in those days - great songwriter.
