The audience not clapping mid song is incredible for a variety of reasons. Namely, the sheer awe everyone is in to behold such a miraculous performance. They know how to appreciate music. True music, that is.

And one more thing to keep in mind he's playing instruments too, it becomes hard while singing cause you have to sing with emotions and if one note missed then emotion is just not there.

Exciting as H to hear/watch. An American / international Treasure and Classic, Billy Joel. They don't write songs w/ this degree of skill any more, mostly. AT LEAST WE DO HAVE HIS RECORDINGS, for as long as our wacky species continues!

His compositions are fabulous. His musicianship with the piano are genius. His lyrics are engaging and timeless, evoking deep emotions that show he and others understand the same demons we contend with in our lives. His vocal gifts include endurance, exceptional range and tonal qualities. In short he has numerous gifts that each by themselves place him in a group of a thousandths of a percent, but has many of these thousandths. I am so thankful he found a way to share them with me and you.

Yes. Great video quality from that era is rare. But video and audio quality haven't really improved since then as far as what is possible. But As far as what is accessible has greatly improved. Movie studios and professional recording studios are not better quality now but we can now take videos with our phone that rival a movie studio's raw footage from 40 years ago.

Quite. In my humble opinion this is one of the greatest songs ever written. Paints an image, a feeling, nearly all can relate to. The lyricism, choice of phrase, cadence in his signing time are all perfect. As an Englishman, Billy Joel is my favourite US artist of all time. Reading his lyrics for a lot of his songs I would assume he's British the way he phrases things. Absolute genius!
I can't stop crying when Billy is singing this song.

It's nine o'clock on a saturday Regular crowd shuffles in There's an old man sittin' next to me Makin' love to his tonic and gin He says: "Son can you play me a memory?" I'm not really sure how it goes But it's sad and it's sweet and I knew it complete When I wore a younger man's clothes La-la-la de-de da La-la de-de da da-da Sing us a song you're the piano man Sing us a song tonight Well we're all in the mood for a melody And you've got us feelin' alright Now John at the bar is a friend of mine He gets me my drinks for free And he's quick with a joke or to light up your smoke But there's someplace that he'd rather be He says Bill I believe this is killing me As a smile ran away from his face Well I'm sure that I could be a movie star If I could get out of this place Oh, la-la-la de-de da La-la de-de da da-da Now Paul is a real estate novelist Who never had time for a wife And he's talkin' with Davy who's still in the navy And probably will be for life And the waitress is practicing politics As the businessmen slowly get stoned Yes they're sharing a drink they call loneliness But it's better than drinkin' alone Sing us the song you're the piano man Sing us a song tonight Well we're all in the mood for a melody And you've got us feelin' alright It's a pretty good crowd for a saturday And the manager gives me a smile 'Cause he knows that it's me they've been comin' to see To forget about life for a while And the piano it sounds like a carnival And the microphone smells like a beer And they sit at the bar and put bread in my jar And say man what are you doin' here? Oh, la-la-la de-de da La-la de-de da da-da Sing us the song you're the piano man Sing us a song tonight Well we're all in the mood for a melody And you've got us feelin' alright
This is one of the best songs ever. Even his worst song, from his worst album is better than anything anyone alive could think of writing. He is one of the few musicians left alive with whom I would like to have a drink. I bet that he would be great company.

This guy is great. All the years and he gets better as he ages. I saw him in St. Louis in 1979 and he had 3 pianos on stage going from one to the other with great energy. Today he focuses on the quality of his music, his voice, and his presentation. The Piano Man is a great song, much better than many hits, and it says a lot. "there's and old man sitting next to me, making love to his tonic and gin".
