Yes, same Billy Thorpe, he moved to the U.S. in the mid '70's and did a whole lot of different things, he released 'Children Of The Sun' (kudos for knowing that), started a soft toy company, co-wrote stories for some children's T.V. shows and composed music scores for lot of T.V. shows. He eventually came back here mid '90's. Interesting dude and flat out legend. Thanks Jeff. ❤

I remember reading about that with Billy and doing some of the books and stuff. There's so much I don't know though thank you for the little nuggets of info I think I'm going to dive into that a little bit. I have a bit of an interest in it. When I was 16 or 17 years old we were a bit mischief and got into a wee bit of trouble and all along the way we were listening to Children Of The Sun.

@@OccasionalOutlaw Isn't it awesome how certain music can take you back to a certain time in your life and actually bring those same feelings back with it? I recommend looking into his life a bit, I try to curb my comments a bit, if I go into too much detail, it ends up being a page long and nobody has time to read all that, but it's easy to look up and I think you'll find it interesting. 😊

GTK means 'get to know', a ten minute show on the ABC(Australian Broadcasting Corporation) featuring local music. It only lasted 6 years after which Countdown started, an hour long show full of Australian and overseas talent, that finished in 1987 when Rage took over which was an all night music show where guest musicians would come on and play their own music and music they like to listen too, done many an allnighter, beer in hand watching Rage. Yes same Billy Thorpe as Child in the Sun, Billy(RIP) was another British born Australian musician along with the likes of John Farnham, Jimmy Barnes and the Young boys from ACDC.

This is the bloke that helped Billy to learn guitar, his good mate Lobby Loyde. This was at Sunbury 73 (Sunbury was the closest thing we had to Woodstock, ran from 72-75), and Lobby's band The Coloured Balls had played at a festival in South Australia. They jumped on a plane to Melbourne, and turned up at Sunbury in the very early hours. Lobby insisted to the roadies that they were going on, and this went down at 3:30am! The roadies said "But everyone is asleep", and Lobby replied "Not for long". He starts on his own, before one by one the other members join in. This is late Billy Thorpe and The Aztecs..... after a classically trained pianist named Lobby Loyd taught him and The Aztecs how to play the blues. Originally..... Thorpie was a child star and at 12 yo the favourite act of a feared Brisbane gangster boss. Legend has it that the gangster was watching Billy sing when an important “business” message was whispered in his ear. The gang boss reacted and started giving orders and instructions...... Billy stopped singing and verbally abused the gangster for being so rude when an artist was performing....... the gangster loved his attitude and innocent courage. lol By the early 1960’s he was the frontman for The Aztecs, billed as Billy Thorpe and The Aztecs. Fashioned on the English POP bands we wrongly called Rock bands...... Mersey Beat was never rock, it was pop that grew out of English Skiffle ( Jug Bands English style , often without a jug ). Lobby Loyd changed all that when he joined The Aztecs as the bass player..... he introduced Billy to the blues and changed the face of Aussie Music forever. Lobby didn’t stay long..... he left to front his own band, Lobby Loyd & The Coloured Balls, and became a legendary Aussie blues guitarist in competition with Thorpie. lol The Aztecs got better than this video...... Thorpie was at his best performing solo with accoustic or electric guitar. Accoustic.... kzbin.info/www/bejne/bn2Qk4yHech0j9U Classic Les Paul..... kzbin.info/www/bejne/m5elZ3SHrKlkiLM You don’t have to review , just listen and enjoy.

@@OccasionalOutlaw Children of the Sun seems to be an oddity to me. It is nothing like anything else I have heard from him at any stage or genre of his career. I also believe it was recorded in the USA and successful there...... but we were told he had no success in the US and was part of the Aussie Hollywood “ mafia” that built movie sets for the studios in Hollywood. All I know is that when he came back to Ozz after 20 years in the USA, he organised a re Union concert with his old band The Aztecs....... after 20 years of not playing together, they had a few days to rehearse and then out on a brilliant live concert for the prisoners in the infamous Boggo Road Jail. Also..... every solo performance I have seen from that period or later has been magic.

The birth of Aussie music happened way before my time on this planet, with Billy Thorpe and other very notable legends…..Jeff St John was outstanding and sounds a tad like Billy in this song. He suffered from Spina Bifida but had such a power house of a voice. Songs include Teach me how to fly and Days to come…..Doug Parkinson was powerful too. Check out the Beatles cover of Dear Prudence. And then you have the incomparable Bon Scott before AC/DC fame in Fraternity that my favourite singer Jimmy Barnes has links to…… maybe old school but check out a Battle of the Bands competition from 1971 called Hoadley’s Battle of the Sounds with Fraternity, Jeff St John and Sherbert (Daryl Braithwaite was lead singer)… Yes it was in Black and white Television but I can’t remember seeing colour TV until later in the 70’s. Other Australian singers include Russell Morris who sang Sweet Sweet Love and The Real Thing, Daddy Cool with Lead singer Ross Wilson (and his subsequent band Mondo Rock), The Easybeats with lead singer Stevie Wright, George Young (Angus Young of AC/DC fame’s older brother) and Harry Vanda, and the epic Evie I, II and III (sung by Stevie Wright). Then add to that other bands like Zoot which Rick Springfield of Jessie’s Girl fame was in before his solo days. Throw in John Farnham who’s had hits most decades from the 60’s, and a wave of bands who started in the 70’s including Cold Chisel, Midnight Oil, AC/DC, INXS, Skyhooks, Air Supply, The Seekers, Divinyls, Hunters and collectors, and throw in some very well played NZ influence Split Ends and Dragon. And finally it would be wrong of me not to mention some of our beautiful women like Olivia Newton John, Marcia Hines, Renee Geyer, and Tina Arena. And then there are bands from the 80’s…….but more on that another time.
