Ah, Thorpy, terrific song. Great memories of my teenage years. Always played his music at parties I went to. Sadly, I still remember watching Billy’s memorial service on KZbin. He died of a heart attack in February 2007. So many Australian artists paid tributes to him, talking and singing. Rest in peace Billy.

One thing that the Aussies, Americans and the people from the UK enjoyed back in the 70s was hard rock music. We sure did have that in common.

Billy Thorpe now your talking mate. What a Legend in all ways the term can be used, Billy took over the guitar and lead vocals for the Original Aztecs when their lead singer left and history began. I think this was a TV show called GTK so this would be recorded in a studio. TY mate for showcasing this one. Keep Safe Keep Strong 🦘🦘🦘🦘🎶🎶🎶🎶💖💖💖💖

F*#k he had a good voice. That SCREAM, as good as you'll ever hear. I wish I'd paid more attention to Billy when he was still around (I'm a bit younger than most here, born in '77, but I know about the infamous Sunbury Festival etc.) By all accounts, he seemed like a really nice guy, gone too soon. Another Australian music legend, not born in Australia. Good old Manchester.

Jeff, to hear the mighty power of Billy Thorpe check out the song Mama…. Such a powerhouse of a song. He has clips up on You Tube from the sixties….one of which is the song, Poison Ivy, a Beatles cover.

deep purple formed in 1968 where as Billy and the Aztecs formed in 1963, so if you hear some purple in the tunes then they probably got it from Billy and the boys not the other way around

I am thinking that the neck pickup on his guitar was a bridge pickup, the poles were towards the bridge when they should be facing towards the neck side. Worked in a establishment with a daughter of his for a short time.

Always love a bit of Thorpy. Some of his best work, in my opinion was at the Boggo Road Gaol concert. Here's a taste of it for your listening pleasure. I'm sure you can pick a song or two out of it to react to. If not, Just listen to the whole experience. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZrKd6ijfsZ0rsU Have a good listen to the last song.

Oh Jeff, That looks like a Studio tape. I was a big fan in 1968/9 when Billy Thorp &The Astecs were doing Discos (Thumpin Tum, Berties) and Saturdays Venues ( The Village Green Hotel, Speak Easy) Those venues DID NOT HAVE the props in the Video you have.. Cheers..

Jeff, how in the world did you get turned on to what must be, in your part of the world, these obscure Aussie artists? Here the late great Thorpey might have been performing at 1972 Sunbury Festival? And I can understand you alluding to Deep Purple there. I hear it too mostly due to keyboards. I could be wrong, but that might be Warren “pig” Morgan on keyboards there channeling DP keyboardist Lord? Billy Thorpe was always a stellar vocalist. Earlier in his career he even cheekily released a version of Somewhere Over The Rainbow. Only later in his career did he play guitar after receiving instruction from Lobby Lloyd.

Ah fuck gotta say Jeff, we were dumped here by the British and isolated from the rest of the world and we had to bring ourselves up as to us we are the aussies , totally different and unique pack of piss tanks from the northern hemisphere and our music reflects this , I do remember clearly the music which we loved in our national enthusiasm was us as we regard as the best pure reflection of a nation just like yours buddy
