One thing I've noticed about Billy is the way he uses cuss words. He really uses them proper, emphasizes emotion. It's raw man.

I feel like anyone who’s lived poor and miserable for an extended amount of time can probably really connect with Woods in general. He does touch on a lot of very black-specific problems, but all the shit about insurance and bills haunting you forever til you finally can’t do anything other than laugh to dull the pain of it all, that shit makes *_perfect_* sense to a white dude like me who grew up *right* next to Skid Row and almost wound up there himself. Almost 75% of the entire population of this damned country lives paycheck-to-paycheck, after all. I’ve been a fan for a while but I swear Billy just gets better and better with time, the man *_cannot_* make bad music.

the theme of the album is the past and not being able to hide from or escape from it. ppl from the past coming by to visit, going back to his childhood home, all of Red Dust, feefos point about the skit about bills still being there even if you dont forward your mail, and drug addicts returning to old habits. “dont tell me thats the past, i live in the past, it aint even that different”

Watching this review was kinda wild for me. Like, I have no idea of what this album would sound like after watching you guys go at it for 20mins. But what's great is that you guys went deep into the lyrical themes and that is something that usually goes over my head. So this was really cool to hear. Like, the only line I can quote from this record is; "Motherfucker, you promised!" 😂And I agree with you guys about Woods' vocal delivery. It is kinda choppy and talky. It's also unique, I think, which is great. Hip Hop is not my thing, really. I'm more into the death metal side of things. However, this is not just one my favorite Hip Hop/Rap albums, it's one of my favorite albums in general. I first heard it last year, so I'm late to the game. It's a masterpiece. This thing starts off with an uncomfortable atmosphere and the way that the synths sound micro tonal or like some of the instrumentals are out of tune. That's really cool and creepy. Then the bass is a little fuzzy or low fidelity or a little distorted. And through out the record, there is this scratchy white noise, like it was recorded on some very old wax. I think that Segal has done a really good job at creating a vibe that feels like everything is just broken or about to fall apart. Then in Checkpoints, there is that crash cymbal that hits on the 1st and the 3rd beat in the first bar of the measure and this brings some crazy swing to that track. In fact, Segal throws in some mad syncopation throughout this record. The other thing to note about hiding places is that the album pacing is done really well. At the halfway point, we're met with Day in a Week in a Year, which has a very laid back, almost dream pop, vibe. I like this because it slows down and opens up the atmosphere and it feels like Woods invites us to get more intimate and emotional from this point on. A track I particular like around here is Crawlspace, which starts off old school then seamlessly transitions to a more D12/Dr Dre sound. The feature by Elucid also introduces a spice of variety in the vocal performance on the record. Later on, Speak Gently comes on and is like some Miles Davies acid jazz type shit. Also kinda feels like an interlude because after that, the album turns dark, violent, and heavy. At the end, the closing track feels like a last desperate cry out for help. A switch from the heavy anger of the previous two tracks. A perfect closer. The other thing is that the album cover perfectly captures what the record sounds like. A photo by Yves Marchand and Romain Meffre from a project called Ruins of Detroit. I'm not sure if Woods if from Detroit but if so, then it's that much cooler. The picture little uneasy all the way through and it feels like everything might just fall apart at any moment. Just like that house. And what you guys have said about the lyrical themes all makes sense now. Perfect packaging. I don't think that this is the sort of album that I would put on shuffle. And I think the tracks would sound a little wacky out of context, like, in a playlist or something. And I definitely wouldn't spin this at a party. But as a unit, Billy Woods and Kenny Segal have created something special here. Thanks for the review.

Not a black dude myself, but some of those bars ring true and sharp just being poor in this country. Getting that letter saying you've been declined and all you can do is laugh because you are *fucked.* I can only imagine how much worse it could be, how much darker it can get out there, and what can I even do? Listen, mainly, and not be an asshole. But even setting that aside, Billy Woods is really in a league of his own as a poet and rapper, but not exactly the most straightforward, and I've got to give Feefo mad props for really stepping outside his comfort zone here and seriously engaging with his work. To me, that's so much more valuable in a reviewer than just sharing my opinions on something.
