@CaffeineJogger4 жыл бұрын
Hi Again David. My spoken Thai is very good. I learned with using phonetics at AUA some 30 years ago. My regret is never really formally learning to write as I feel it would of given me a better understanding of tones and how a Thai word can change simply by an intricate tone adjustment. "new silk doesn't burn" is a good example. Anyway, I want to follow your classes along and wondering if you have an order process to assist me.
What to know its is one letter or just like you make two sound so its has two pattern ? Want to know

@@davevoetberg it is going to take a lot of work. Do you think formal classes are necessary if I am really serious? You know the cost of a good class for American foreigner in Thailand??
@davevoetberg5 жыл бұрын
@@thomashoppes8594 I think the formal route can help with the discipline/motivation piece & also fill in some gaps that you may miss on your own. At the same time, with some healthy motivation, its not absolutely necessary to go the formal route. For one, you can save a lot of money. You'll just need to get some good resources & really start attacking the language. I would definitely recommend getting a real solid grasp on the alphabet & then use that as a springboard into the world of Thai. Sorry, not sure on prices. $10 USD or more an hour possibly, I would imagine.

I have a question. Why do some thai pronounce “r” as “l” . I just noticed in some tutorial videos . Say for example. “what” in tutorial vid they say its “Arai” but in dramas I watch actors pronounced it as “Alai”. I’m really confused.
@davevoetberg4 жыл бұрын
Jess Lacuesta The rolled 'r' is often informally pronunced as an 'l' sound at the beginning of words. I imagine just something that has taken place over time as the 'l' sound is just more easily pronounced.
@jesslacuesta88494 жыл бұрын
David Voetberg So you mean to say if i pronounce words with an “r” as “l”, thai people will understand it? I know there’s more that I need to know 😫

THANK YOU!! this helps! Sorry if this is a stupid question, Maybe I havent gotten there yet, but can anyone help me🙏 I'm confused because i can look at a word/letters and can start to read it for example, but if I hear a word (since multiple characters can make same initial sound) how to do I know which version/letter of that of a sound to use when writing from hearing?
@davevoetberg4 жыл бұрын
Alli Peters Glad the video was helpful, Alli. As to your question, that will probably just be something you'll have to refer to a dictionary for earlier on. Once you get more familiar with Thai, you may be able to make more educated guesses as to which letters are used more frequently & in what positions, but I would lean heavy on the dictionary for starters.

Hello dave voetberg like your video man.. Im been learning thai for a while now on italki.. Do you think learning the alphabet and reading and writing speeds up the learning and do you think people who can read thai are better with tones then the person who cant spell it.
@davevoetberg6 жыл бұрын
Hi there Paul, I would say some people probably have more of a natural aptitude for correct pronunciation than others. Some just have a hard time hearing the different tones which affects pronunciation.That being said, in general I do think learning how to read does serve for a better pronunciation in the long run. I think for me personally, written Thai has helped sharpen my accuracy of 'tone direction'. My theory on language learning (if possible) is, go straight for the alphabet. Once you do that, stay there & let it serve you in multiple ways over time.

Rarely use, for example: ฌอน = Sean (the name of a person written in Thai). ญ.หญิง not ญ.ผู้หญิง . Please take of ผู้ . Do you know Adam? Thank you for the videos. I hate to be critical because I haven't tried to make a video better than yours. I certainly mean this in a constructive way and hope you understand there is no malice. Your presentation is lacking several things. One, your writing on the board is legible however, you could have spent a little more time writing the characters better. Two, you could have scripted your presentation on some cue cards and used better transitioning between characters. Three, you should spell out each name and what it means in transliteration and Thai script as well. It's hard to understand you as the audio quality of your video is not very good. Take a look at Waree's video as the quality is so much better. As a foreigner and fellow American, you don't use your gifts and knowledge to your advantage....you can do better.
