Your videos are great. I hope you make more videos for native English speakers trying to learn Thai. I really appreciate how your videos give context for those of us coming from English.

I went through all the basic reading rules. It was so clear that it made me feel like I was a genius! Haha... so I decided to look back over vowels.. it is explained so clearly and I love the way he separates each pair from low to high! It makes so much more sense for memorization and cutting out unnecessary confusion. I used to frown upon learning from a non-native speaker but it actually brings in a better perspective.

Tips : ฤ ฤา are mostly found in ancient or old text or poem. Modern Thais no longer use these in everyday life.

It originated from Sanskrit(dead language from Indian subcontinent). We still use it in some specific words like ฤๅษี(A kind of monk who lives alone in the woods usually present in children stories) which is the most common and we still don't use it much. The real thing is ฦ ฦๅ which I've never used in my life.

Thank you these have been great very useful. The expanded explanations are helpful. As a real beginner, I think it would also be very helpful if there was a separate vid with you just pointing at them one by one and making the sounds so I could follow along and loop it over and over. Just an idea, and it's up to me to practice anyway. It is very beneficial having a NES doing the pronounciation and thanks for your time in doing these lessons. I'm certainly using and benefiting from them. I just don't mention it for every one, but I appreciate them all. On ya Dave

Hi. i'm Thai. I don't speak English well. I happened to see your video about Thai langague. As a child, I used to learn how to remember using ' ใ 'vowels . The comments below is Thai poems. 'ใส' means clear or transparent 'ไส' means planing(wood).

For the Ai mai malai and mai mwan, there is a poem that we learn as kids that helps us know when to use Mai Mwan. You kind of get used to which ones to use as you grow up, but elementary school kids have a poem to help them when they are in doubt. There are supposed to be 20 words that uses Mai Mwan :). th.wikisource.org/wiki/ผู้ใหญ่หาผ้าใหม่

Hello David, I am a little confused at ฤ and ฤา. They do not seem like vowels but are listed as vowels so are they used just like every other vowel or do they have different rules? Thanks in advance.

Hi Dave, rolled R is very common in Russian so I can make very pronounced RRR sound. Should I make it very pronounce or try to subdue it? Also this wide "yii" is a common Russian sound :)
@davevoetberg
@davevoetberg 5 жыл бұрын
Anton T Hey Anton, The rolled R has become simply an L sound in most everyday conversations. The rolled R can be more reserved for formal situations. Although, I've met maybe 2 or 3 people who do appreciate the continual use of the rolled R in everyday, informal conversations :) It's up to you but if you want to go with the flow you can subdue it for the most part.

Hi Dave , The rolled R sound feels impossible for me to make, would you have any suggestions on how i can try and get my tongue to make it lol??
@davevoetberg
@davevoetberg 6 жыл бұрын
THE XEN TRADER Good news is this letter is mostly pronounced like an 'L' in informal conversation a great majority of the time. Maybe just start with the 'L' sound for niw & take consistent opportunities to work on the rolled 'R' in the meantime.

What does it mean if there's only one "tell-tale sign of a short vowel" above or below a consonant? For example, what's the difference between บ and บั?
@tepteppron5337
@tepteppron5337 4 жыл бұрын
บ is a consonant bo baimai or (sounds like B) if you have บั that tail above since thats a bowel sound (aa) you have a paired consonant and vowel so you read it as (baa)

At the end of a word Short ะ is spelled as ะ for example นะ And if that vowel is used at the middle of a word meaning another consonant is there after that vowel then it's spelled above the initial consonant. For ex: ฉัน

If it's a classroom it might be possible to see around you but here we need x-ray vision. Can I recommend you use a long pointer and stand off to the left or right side. Thanks.
