Zero being black and illiterate is done on purpose. All the boys are from disadvantaged backgrounds but poor Zero has it the worst of the worst- he faces the disadvantages of racial discrimination, homelessness, illiteracy, and not not having parents. That's why so many others treat him like the "lowest of the low" and why it's important Stanley treats him like any other kid & helps him overcome what disadvantages he can.

Wait.... really? I didn't even think of it that way, I thought that it was the fact that he couldn't read and that he was like much worse off .... that he wasn't able to learn stuff that everyone takes for granted. Because like he wasn't the only one with with darker skin (at least from what I remember).. I always thought it was because they thought he was dumb because he wasn't able to get a basic education... Or did it go right over my head

There's actually only one significant difference between the book and movie: In the book, Stanley was overweight, and being sent to the camp made him lose all of it to where he was super skinny. They chose not to do this because forcing Shia LaBeouf to lose all that weight on the quick schedule they were on would've caused significant damage to his adolescent body.

There’s so many connections in this movie that it took me so long to realize that I feel like people still don’t notice 😭 the boat that zero’s living in when he runs away & eats the jarred peaches is sam’s boat that he died in on the lake, the formula for Sploosh the foot deodorant is peaches & onions, zero is madame zeroni’s great great great (great?) grandson, the lizards don’t harm zero & Stanley at the end when they’re in the hole cuz they had been eating onions and in the first flashback scene the men say they need sam’s onion juice to ward off lizards, etc

It's neat how the scenes from 1890's Latvia, the early 1900's Green Lake and the present are all connected. Also, how Stanley just happened to be put in the same group with Zero, who just happened to be a descendent of the woman who cursed his family. Stanley always said he was in the wrong place at the wrong time, but it seemed to me he was in the right place at the right time. Like when he was caught with the sunflower seeds. If that hadn't happened, then Mr. Sir wouldn't have taken him to the Warden's cabin and he wouldn't have seen the newspaper clippings about Kissing Kate Barlow on the wall of the Warden's powder room and realized what that gold tube was that he found. Most importantly, Stanley being carried to the Warden's cabin gave Zero the opportunity to finish Stanley's hole for him, which made Stanley change his mind about teaching Zero to read, which led Stanley and Zero to become friends. It's also neat how Stanley's father found the cure for foot odor right after Stanley carried Zero up the mountain and sang the song to him, meaning the curse on Stanley's family had finally been lifted. And when it started raining on Camp Green Lake after the Warden, Mr. Sir and Dr. Pendansky were arrested , meaning the curse on the lake, which was caused by Sam's murder, was finally lifted as well.

The idea for the Holes song at the beginning came form the actors themselves. The boys were goofing around while on set making up their own rhymes and the director liked what they were putting down. He decided to have them write their own lyrics and put them in a sound booth for recording. The movie was filmed mostly in California but based in Texas. The book had the location as Texas.

Love this movie. I've watched both the commentaries for it so many times. Here are some interesting facts they talk about the movie: The boys came up with the opening song while hanging out together in their hotel rooms. The actor who played Zigzag sang the main lyrics with the others providing backup, each one had their own verse and everything. According to the some of them the water in the jugs was disgusting. The boys called the bean lunch sploop. Jon Voigt (Mr. Sir) would be walking around eating Colgate sandwiches all the time and had the nicest smelling breath on set. The onions were actually apples wrapped up in saran wrap paper. While climbing the top of God's Thumb the two boys were beatboxing the entire time. The jumpsuits were actually changed for the last hole scene to help the lizards get a better grip. They had a really hard time keeping them off Zero, they loved playing with his hair. Most of the lines by Henry Winkler who played the dad were just him adlibbing, like when he asked to smell the cops shoes and his reaction after he finds the shoes no longer stink. Shiah had a really hard not laughing at him. Pretty much all the kids were kind of scared of Xray, they thought he was pretty badass. The guys in the jail cell were the director's family. The author of the Holes book is actually in the movie during the first time skipback. None of the other boys knew about the end credit scene with Zero/Khleo until they watched the movie together for the commentary. The boys had a lot of great stories. And the directors commentary had a lot of interesting stuff too.

I remember reading the book then watching the movie in my 4th grade class, thinking to myself “wow we really do some weird stories” as the story of Kissing Kate was being told. And then it just got sad. And we had to analyze how it was noticeable that all the boys came from the poorer side of society and how Zero had no parents to speak of in the eyes of the jury and adults of the camp so they treated him as the lowest of the low, being able to do whatever to him without consequences as a result, even letting him die. And it spoke on the class/judicial system in America and it’s discrimination of people from certain races, classes, and living areas/situations. It really was a “simple” story that really went over our heads at nine and ten years old, but they had us reading really intense stories. This and the Tell Tale Heart(literally read that every year in English class, we all got so tried of it after the third time) the Whipping Boy (literally a kids story about a boy being WHIPPED in place of the prince cause they couldn’t hit the prince, who then would purposely be bad so the whipping boy would be beaten in front of him and enjoy it, yup, we read that in 4th grade) The Witches (I liked witches and spooky things so I kinda enjoyed this one but it was scary too) Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes(sad af I tell you. I remember crying right in my class I didn’t care, that book was SAD and I was literally 10 years old). Canadian public school was out to traumatize its kids with wild and depressing stories

Many movies and tv shows for kids do not have that more adult undertone anymore that the kids may not realise until older. I feel like it does help kids mature easier if they have that slight undertone in their entertainment growing up. They actually played this movie for some kids after reading the book at the school i work at earlier this year. I personally had this movies main rap song stuck in my head on repeat as a kid after watching it. It is one of those movies you go back and listen to the soundtrack because nostalgia is a thing.

And since that night not a single drop of rain fell on Green Lake. It's up to us the readers to decide whom it was that God punished that night. I remember enjoying bits and pieces of this movie as a kid. My friend and I would reenact the parts that felt 'epic'. Like the nail scratching scene. Became a teenager and thought, "Why did I ever like that movie? It was boring and just nonsense." Then I became an adult and rewatched it with my husband and realized... oh, I was just too young to understand, this is a fantastic movie.

One part in the movie I liked that wasn't in the book was when the Warden asked Pendansky if he could erase Zero's files after Zero attacked Pendansky with the shovel and ran away. Pendansky told the Warden "Nobody is going to come looking for him. Nobody cares about Hector Zeroni" and right after that Stanley comes in and gets right in Pendansky's face and says "I do". I love that part. By the way, all through the movie Pendansky called Zero stupid, but I think it's pretty stupid to call somebody stupid and then give that person a shovel.

A few years ago when I was a little children, I had a class where we compared the story of the book to the movie. It was easy because the movie basically follows every aspect of the book except the fact that Mr. Shea Laabuff was not fat like the Stanley from the book.

There were several differences between the book and the movie. But the differences were pretty minor and didn't really change the plot that much. 1. In the book, Stanley's father was trying to find a way to recycle old sneakers and discovered the cure for foot odor by accident. 2. In the book, Katherine Barlow and Sam the Onion Man were caught kissing by a woman named Hattie Parker, not Trout Walker who caught them in the movie. 3. In the book, X-Ray has very poor eyesight, which was why he asked Stanley to let him have the next thing he finds that may be interesting. In the movie X-Ray tells Stanley to let him have whatever he finds just because he'd been there six months and it wasn't fair for Stanley to get a day off when he'd just gotten there. X- Ray was a lot nicer to Stanley in the book than he was in the movie. 4.. In the movie, Stanley was given the nickname "Caveman" after he agreed to let X-Ray have whatever he found. In the book Stanley was already called Caveman before X-Ray talked to him. 5. In the book, Stanley's trial was delayed for six weeks because of baseball season, which was why Zero was already at the camp when Stanley arrived. This is not mentioned in the movie. These are just some of the differences between the book and the movie. There were several scenes in the book that were not in the movie, or they were in the movie but deleted in the final cut

I can’t fully explain why, but this is such a comfort movie for me. Yes I watched it and read the book all the time as a kid, but it’s more than just nostalgia. The story with Kate and Sam always got to me and made me cry, and Zero's friendship with Stanley teaching him to read, sharing the money with him and Zero finding his mom, just… ugh. This isn’t some amazing cinematic masterpiece of course but it’s got such a great vibe. I often sing that “if only if only” song idly while I’m doing other things.

I read the book and watched the movie it was so tear jerking for me seeing the racial discrimination zero,Sam and maybe others all in encountered and knowing Kate was madly in love with sam and him gone out of her life made me cry, and the fact Stanley was wrongfully put there was terrible 😔 there is so many people out there in the world in jail right now doing time for crimes they didn't commit, also in the movie it talks about the curse with madam zeroni and how elya didn't take her up the mountain I think since Stanley took zero up the mountain ( zero being a zeroni ) he broke the curse and ended up having good luck

Honestly, this movie was a large part of my childhood because of how much it impacted me. My brother introduced me to it, and at the time he wasn't back in jail. But after a week, he went back to jail. And I watched the movie nonstop because that was the last thing he gave me. I found comfort in it, and I even wondered what it would be like if my brother was at Camp Greenlake. And the songs I knew verse from verse, line from line. I knew the whole plot, theorys, and timeline. I got to thank this movie for everything, and thank you for watching it and making me remember my childhood.

This series is of course base of its books by C.S Lewis just like Harry Potter. And there also a BBC one from the 80s and 90s. Plus don’t forget to drink you water

Finally someone reacted to this movie! Weird fact about me. I was 10 when this movie came out. What did I do. Well at the time. I lived right across the street of an elementary school and I went to the “sandbox” part of the playground and literally dug a hole as deep and as wide as the shovel I was digging with 😂 The teacher or school board whatever came out and asked why. I said just cause and told them I’ll fill it up when I’m done and they let me be. They let me go and I filled it back up 🤣 super weird but I remember it being a pain in the ass to dig a hole that deep!
