Billy Joel “Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)" from Old Grey Whistle Test
Listen to Billy Joel: billyjoel.lnk....
Shortly after Billy Joel earned his first U.K. Top 40 hit with “Just The Way You Are,” he and his band travelled to England for an electrifying performance recorded for the hit BBC series The Old Grey Whistle Test. Ahead of his first headlining show in the country, Billy performed all the hits from The Stranger plus additional classics from his repertoire.

Lyrics:
Anthony works in the grocery store
Savin' his pennies for someday
Mama Leone left a note on the door
She said, Sonny, move out to the country
Workin' too hard can give you
A heart attack (ack)
You oughta know by now (oughta know)
Who needs a house out in Hackensack
Is that what you get with your money
It seems such a waste of time
If that's what it's all about
Mama if that's movin' up
Then I'm movin' out
I'm movin' out
Sergeant O'Leary is walkin' the beat
At night he becomes a bartender
He works at Mister Cacciatore's down
On Sullivan Street
Across from the medical center
He's tradin' in his Chevy for a Cadillac
You oughta know by now
And if he can't drive
With a broken back
At least he can polish the fenders
It seems such a waste of time
If that's what it's all about
Mama if that's movin' up
Then I'm movin' out
I'm movin' out
You should never argue with a crazy mind (mmm)
You oughta know by now
You can pay Uncle Sam with the overtime
Is that all you get for your money
If that's what you have in mind
If that's what you're all about
Good luck movin' up
'Cause I'm moving out
I'm moving out
I'm moving out

Yeah, it was my fave late night show (well, late night in those days!). King Crimson's performance was one that changed everything for me. A band that I got into in my high school days but never saw live because they broke up in 1974/5. Then all of a sudden they appear again, doing/playing like nothing I'd heard before.Thankfully you can find a lot of OGWT clips on here. The box set dvd's are a great reminder, of naked live performance and creativity on show (no fancy lighting and effects, just stripped down to performance. BTW, love Billy Joel.

This is such a quintessential 70s pop, jazz, New York and American classic. It voices and captures the frustration of late 20th century middle class ambitions so clearly. Joel's character knows about the sacrifices his parents, family and community made for his comfortable life and appreciates them but is impatient to make his own mark on the world. By painting such a specific and personal picture of a time and place he conversely universalizes his story, as he does in so much of his music. His stories are of weary, wary but still optimistic characters finding their way in the world and the portraits are tender but unsparing. He loves his home but he's outgrown it, and is now MOVIN' OUT, as so many young adults do. It's that ambition that moves life forward.

When I was a kid my Dad loved this guy so much and I didn't appreciate it. Maybe because at the time I'd thought that it was "Dad" music. Well, I'm an older adult now, and I sure do appreciate it now. Thanks Dad.❤

Fame is fickle, but for those of us who were privileged to hear him in the 70’s, we knew back then that Billy would NEVER be put “in the discount rack like another can of beans”.

@Joel Billy Well I'm not altogether convinced it's Billy Joel . A clue: Your name is reversed. But hey, you could be the head of his PR ,or something, But I thank you for the reply. I sincerely Love Joel's music and since the 80's, I'm glad to have grown up in a time when his music was appreciated. He will always be an original,a kind of free spirit.

@Joel Billy Exactly, I'm a fan! But there is a lot of scamming going on You tube, so if I am talking to Billy Joel, in the flesh, sorry. But make no mistake, I'm only a fan, not a crazy groupie type either. I'm a free spirit, but steady is my middle name.

Saw him in concert back in the 70s, maybe early 80s, and man he was just fantastic. Nothing like I thought it would be. He was so energetic, didn’t just play piano all night but was up and moving.

Still in the throes of Superstar fame, Billy is clearly digging the shit out of himself. I've seen him four times, been privileged to see Billy four times, River of Dreams Tour '93 (Cincinnati); Billy W/Elton John Face To Face Ohio State Late summer '94; Philly Feb 18, '98 and once more in Philly a few years later. He still had his range, A Billy Joel concert is an emotional work out; the man knows how to take his fans along with him for a ride!!

At 2:08, Billy's face lights up so happy. He must love the energy that segment simply rolls so smooth and vibrant. Amazing musical arrangement and lyrics. He's truly a Hall of Fame rocker.

What is more important is that is that he's a musician. Hall of Fame is a very suspicious organization. You can learn about it from Steve Miller's lawsuit interviews. They also overprice everyone going there. You have to understand that the Hall of Fame tricks us to thinking that it is OUR list. It is not, and it is _privately_ decided. Why should we hold it in any real value? A website bestowing these honors with an organized consensus vote would have been better in nominating.
