Lifelong fan, as I'm in my last year of cancer, I'll share a moment of serendipity (google it). Took a bus tour to NYC on Gray Coach (Apr20-23/84) when I was 16. Awesome. At tour's end, our Greyhound bus was travelling up the Hudson river line as Manhattan was lit up like Paris. I was listening to my walkman when the radio played this song. An absolute highlight of my life and one I haven't shared til now (who would believe me?). Thank you, Mr Joel, for one of those moments of life that make life worth living.

I was never a big Billy Joel fan back in the 70s. But this seriously impressed me. He's a better piano player than I remembered. Like, a serious player. It's funny when he really goes full on Ray Charles with his voice. I think it was his good friend Paul Simon who once said that Billy could imitate anyone, which could be a detriment because it made it harder for his natural voice to come out.

Billy Joel's "New York State of Mind" is an incredible masterpiece that showcases his exceptional talent as a musician, singer, and songwriter. The way he effortlessly blends soulful vocals with his piano skills is truly a gift from above. At my 32 years of age, I can attest that there's no one more original and iconic than Billy Joel. Even though I'm not from New York, this song, especially the sax solo, gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. Billy's music is like its own genre, and it's something we all cherish. His songs have the power to transport you to a time and place, a true testament to his amazing artistry. Long live the legend, Billy Joel! 🎹🗽🎵🔥

Saw Billy Joel in summer of ‘76 backing up Jefferson Starship (still with Kantner, Slick & Balin). Before the concert thought Billy was just another middling top 40 artist. Blew my socks off. He’s one of the giants of American music, as this video clearly shows. Geniuses like him don’t come along often.

@@MrYoYoBoBoChaddyInsaneZhangII Amen. They're a godsend for finding and watching talent that is not yet well known. I also recommend the website "Song Exploder" for same, plus they get interviewed about how they built the featured song. There are some old songs and a focus on movie and TV themes that is also appealing, but mainly, it's acts with a growing following that are not yet big.

I remember this like it was yesterday. Taped it on VHS and watched it again and again. The Stranger is a great album. I was lucky enough to see him in London for this tour - theatre role Dury Lane if my memory serves me right. Loved Liberty Devito on drums. Only Ben Folds comes close musically and with his lyrics.

His one-handed runs at 4:30 to 5:00 are the reason I learnt to play piano. This classic OGWT episode is worthy of a release and one of the best gigs I have ever witnessed. His band were completely in sync and honed after a solid European tour. Probably the most capable that Billy ever was - just entered his peak period. Still had that elastic voice capable of hitting any notes.
