Elton John

5 жыл бұрын

Elton performed numerous songs on the BBC music TV show, The Old Grey Whistle Test. Among them was ‘Tiny Dancer’ in 1971, destined to become one of his most enduring tracks. Just recently, it was given an official music video in the global KZbin competition, The Cut, and is among the Elton John songs that can be heard on the Rocketman movie trailer starring Taron Egerton.

I was there. At the time, I had seen 35 years of great concerts ( including iElton in 1976). This one ranks up with the absolute best I’ve ever seen. A guy who played like he was playing his last show, in front of only what that hockey arena in Duluth could hold. Some 10,000 people tops were there. An incredible musician, who did not hold back one bit for a smaller venue. A guy who throughout the evening, thanked the audience and told them that they were the reason he plays. A hugely talented and gracious display. I’m so glad I was there.

In the 1980s I saw Elton John in concert 4 times. Three were huge, loud, rock and roll extravaganzas. However, the first was in a small proscenium auditorium. The first half was just Elton and his piano. The second half, Nigel Olsson came out and accompanied on drums. Obviously that first concert was far and away the best.

I had a stroll around Penny Lane yesterday. Not much has changed .Lennon’s first family home a short walk away. The barber shop is still there, the bank is now a surgery, the shelter is still there, the fire station is luxury apartments. But the community that Paul remembers is still thriving. A very ordinary, but very evocative place.

If this was the only song Elton John ever wrote with Bernie Taupin, he'd still be a genius. It was Elton who took Taupin's lyrics, and rearranged them into a throwback song structure that keeps us listening and engaged for nearly three minutes before the first chorus. It's brilliant. Taupin wrote it as a verse/chorus/verse/chorus thing. Elton doesn't use it. He changes up the chord sequence slightly within the verse to keep us interested, and strings us along for half the song before the chorus. People just do not write in this style anymore, not since the 1930s or '40s, which may be why it wasn't a hit, but its brilliant structure has ensured that it would endure as a great song and a fan favorite forever. The moment this song came on in the film, "Almost Famous" the movie was transported to greatness.
