Lyrics:
A bottle of white, a bottle of red
Perhaps a bottle of rose instead
We'll get a table near the street
In our old familiar place
You and I, face to face
A bottle of red, a bottle of white
It all depends upon your appetite
I'll meet you any time you want
In our Italian Restaurant
Things are okay with me these days
Got a good job, got a good office
Got a new wife, got a new life
And the family's fine
We lost touch long ago
You lost weight I did not know
You could ever look so nice after
So much time
Do you remember those days hanging out
At the village green
Engineer boots, leather jackets
And tight blue jeans
Drop a dime in the box play the
Song about New Orleans
Cold beer, hot lights
My sweet romantic teenage nights
Brenda and Eddie were the
Popular steadys
And the king and the queen
Of the prom
Riding around with the car top
Down and the radio on
Nobody looked any finer
Or was more of a hit at the
Parkway Diner
We never knew we could want more
Than that out of life
Surely Brenda and Eddie would
Always know how to survive
Brenda and Eddy were still going
Steady in the summer of '75
When they decided the marriage would
Be at the end of July
Everyone said they were crazy
Brenda you know you're much too lazy
Eddie could never afford to live that
Kind of life
But there we were wavin' Brenda and
Eddie goodbye
They got an apartment with deep
Pile carpet
And a couple of paintings from Sears
A big waterbed that they bought
With the bread
They had saved for a couple
Of years
They started to fight when the
Money got tight
And they just didn't count on
The tears.
They lived for a while in a
Very nice style
But it's always the same in the end
They got a divorce as a matter
Of course
And they parted the closest
Of friends
Then the king and the queen went
Back to the green
But you can never go back
There again
Brenda and Eddie had had it
Already by the summer of '75
From the high to the low to
The end of the show
For the rest of their lives
They couldn't go back to
The greasers
The best they could do was
Pick up the pieces
We always knew they would both
Find a way to get by
That's all I heard about
Brenda and Eddie
Can't tell you more than I
Told you already
And here we are wavin' Brenda
And Eddie goodbye
A bottle of red, a bottle of white
Whatever kind of mood you're in tonight
I'll meet you anytime you want
In our Italian Restaurant

So, what we have here is a true American Master. Billy writes his superb music, plays excellent piano, has a strong lead voice and surrounds himself with wonderful musicians. In other words, Billy Joel is the complete package. And, everything he does is at a very high level. Billy is up there with people like Paul McCartney and a few others. Unlike lesser performers, Billy understands music theory, and uses complex chord and melody structures. This leads to his songs having a unique feeling and sound, unlike some (Elton John comes to mind) where after a while, everything starts to sound the same. I grew up in Bethpage, Long Island, near Hicksville where Billy grew up. As a musician (my band was "Russ & the Vibrations) I was aware of who Billy was and that he was really good. It was gratifying to see someone become wildly successful because of their talent and hard work, as opposed to making it because of who you know. Billy is the real deal, and he has remained down to earth in spite of his success. He deserves his success and hopefully can share his gifts with the rest of us for many years to come. One word to sum up my feelings---------BRAVO Billy.

Elton John and Billy Joel are on the same boat. Great songs. Great performers. The Beatles are not bad either. It's not a question of technique. Music theory often gets in the way of pure inspiration. I don't like Billy Joel for his skills as an instrumentist. I like the attitude and the world he is creating. The top musicians cannot write an interesting song. Legendary songwriters are pure amateurs.

Scott R I’m 20, studying music, and have worked my ASS off since I was five to get where I am. The best concerts I have ever seen are the ones like this, where it’s just good, live music and great musicians. There’s nothing wrong with the new way of performing concerts. But I’m my opinion, 90% of the time it’s just a cover for the fact that the artists can’t sing it as well live as the studio recording. There are some very good live singers, like Bruno Mars, Ariana, Gaga, Beyoncé, etc, and even they have to put on a ridiculously overproduced show because apparently just music itself doesn’t cut it anymore. So, Mr “Ok boomer,” maybe try keeping the insults to yourself next time. Thanks.

The first time I saw Billy in the late 70's in St. Louis. I expected a guy, a piano, a cigarette smoking on the piano next to a cocktail glass: An intimate evening with a piano crooner with an almost invisible backing band. Holy Shit could those guys rock! Billy was all over the stage, jumping on and off the piano, Liberty was smashing the drums, Richie Cannota was a sax god! The energy on stage, the complexity of the music, Billy's voice from sweet to growl, in his prime. Amazing. Just amazing.

I played in a band in and after high school. Often the crowd is so pumped and connected that their energy bleeds off into you as a performer. You feel an intense rush and finish in clothes soaked with sweat. And it's one glorious thing to experience. We played a lot of gigs for free. The crowd payback was more than enough. Those sweet romantic teenage nights.

I’m 70ish now, but oddly I 🩷 Billy Joel 🎤 + 🎹 music MORE now than when I was younger! Unfortunately I missed out on his most recent concert in my area bc of being overseas on the dates 😥. He’s not only THE ‘Piano Man’ but a 👍 singer too imo!

I met Billy Joel in person when he played a free concert at my University. He was so lovely. I found out he went to Bklyn College the year before my big Sister. He asked me what I thought of his beard because the drawing of him that I asked him to sign showed him clean-shaven. I replied, "For truth." He said, "Yes." I answered, "Not much." He proceeded to tell me, "My GF doesn't like it either, so I guess I'll have to shave it off." His GF at the time was Christie Brinkley, The Uptown Girl. As I walked away, he called out to me, "Go luck on your finals tomorrow", & I said, "Thanks, I need all the good wishes I can get." Do you know what stood out the most about Billy Joel & that concert? His saxophonist, Richie Cannata, got a Standing O for his solo on "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant". Joel jumped on top of his piano & started clapping along with us. When Cannata finished, Joel told him to continue to play because that, pointing to us, is for you. Cannata played for another 5-10 minutes, & then Joel jumped off from his piano, sat down, & waited for the intro back into the song. That's one generous musician!

It is a treasured song. I have a very old friend who loves it too. We went to school together and on her 50th birthday I bought her a bottle of white and a bottle of red and inside the card it said ‘meet you anytime you want at our Italian restaurant’ and we both broke down and cried. To have friendships span generations you feel a song like this.

Because of your comment, I have a joke for you. A woman drives into a gas station to buy gas. After paying for the gas, she takes out a can of oil from the trunk of her car. She asks the worker to put it in for her. He explains, "We only put oil in cars if the customer bought the oil from us." Then she goes to complain to the manager. The manager asked the woman, "Ma'am, when you go to a restaurant, do you bring your own steak and eggs and say 'Here, cook them for me?"
