He was at a crossroads in his life.. if you hear him discuss his feelings, you'll understand why this album isn't all rainbows and unicorns. He had a contentious split from a manager who acted very unscrupulously toward him, and his marriage to CB was coming to an end, and he felt very disillusioned by life. Music is a sort of therapy, and I think this album certainly was for him. He's in a very good place these days...new wife, new baby, a great relationship with his oldest daughter Alexa Ray, and he is able to create and perform on his own terms, and Live a comfortable life. He's certainly earned it.

I was in 1st grade when I first heard River of Dreams on the radio. Instantly I was a Billy Joel fan. I got shit for it because it was the 90s and it was all grunge and hip hop at the time but I have stuck with Billy for years! I wish he'd make a new album but I also have a special place for this album and he went out on a high note for sure.

The song, if you really listen to it closely, could also have been on his Innocent Man album in 1983. Similar vibe. I liked it in 1993 when it came out and have just rediscovered it.

Same thing with You're Only Human....yes, Billy returned to that style a few times....its understandable why he quit writing pop music - he was running out of ideas and felt boxed in by popular music.

The reason you like everyone Billy Joel is because you are Billy Joel and new people will initially act in a certain way when meeting you because you are Billy Joel. Their true colours (good or bad) will only come out later.

In the early '90s, my grandpa visits a friend's farm (Horton's farm) in Glastonbury Connecticut. He hears they're filming parts of the River of Dreams music video inside the barn and goes over there for a visit. He proceeds to chat up Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley. Keep in mind, my grandpa has no idea who they are. He calls my mom, living in New Hampshire at the time, and tells her about the experience. She is understandably livid and asks him, "Dad, don't YOU KNOW who BILLY JOEL is? He says, "No, but his wife was awfully nice!" My mom tells me this story years later, and is shocked at how clueless he is about the cultural zeitgeist. Some people are just in the right place at the right time, I guess.

For me, this really is an album of two halves. I don't think the first side is that good, but the second side is fantastic. All About Soul would have to be my all time favourite Joel song.

No wonder why he stopped making new pop music. Who'd want to make more music with such a gloomy, pessimistic mindset he ended up having? He just didn't have it anymore musically. He just ended up grasping at straws both musically and lyrically for ideas, at least for pop records. Not making anymore pop music was the smartest move Billy Joel ever made in his career.

At least he knew when to quit while he was still relevant. Some other songwriters keep recording even though the music suffers. I’d rather remember an artist at his best, not him digging a hole.
