Lyrics:
In the middle of the night
I go walking in my sleep
From the mountains of faith
To a river so deep
I must be looking for something
Something sacred I lost
But the river is wide
And it's too hard to cross
And even though I know the river is wide
I walk down every evening and I stand on the shore
And try to cross to the opposite side
So I can finally find out what I've been looking for
Billy Joel's official KZbin channel features music videos, live performances, interviews, TV appearances and more. Best known for his first hit song, 'Piano Man', in 1973, Billy has written and recorded thirty-three Top 40 hits in the United States. He is a six-time Grammy Award winner, a 23-time Grammy nominee and one of the world's best-selling artists of all time, having sold over 150 million records worldwide. Billy Joel is the sixth-best-selling recording artist and the third-best-selling solo artist in the United States.

I disagree. Never heard/read a single negative word about his prime singing voice. Why is he always on the radio and Bob Dylan isn’t really? They’re both amazing artists and writers but Billy sounds amazing and it’s easier listening as opposed to Bob’s more rough folk sound

Great way to put it, and the gal on bongos is really into it. Super performance by all. One of the best vids on YT. And free. There used to be a vid of a sea turtle hatching in the sand and instinctively crawls slowly to the water, and makes it by the end of the song. Brilliant work. Worth a watch if still up.

My grandmother died three weeks ago and I chose to play this at her funeral because she used to dance with my brother and cousins and I to this song. I asked permission to organise her funeral because she was my best friend, confidant, and I simply just adored her. She loved this song. As the only Granddaughter, I felt it was my duty to organise a celebration of her life. I couldn't cope with my dad and his brother trying to organise a ceremony for her by themselves and didn't want them to choose the outfit she wore in her coffin. I chose a watermelon pink dress I knew she'd adore. She looked so beautiful and at peace. I spoke a eulogy and then my Dad did then I chose this song to pause and reflect on her views. I cried my eyes out because I knew she would like an upbeat song at her celebration. My Dad held my hand and told me I had made the most beautiful celebration of his mother's life he could ever imagine. There are a lot of reasons why I chose this song, and maybe some family members didn't love it, but it was true to her spirit. I hope she loved it. Thank you, Billy.

I first heard this on the radio in my car in 1993, it was the only uptempo song that ever gave me goosebumps, from the first time hearing til now, I am a life long fan of Billy Joel for years before and always looked forward to his next album, what style is he going to choose this time I thought. This song style is an homage to the do wop era, but the lyrics paint a much deeper picture of disappointment, fear and self doubt, it was written because his ex manager and brother in law ripped him off, Billy said he lost faith in people and his own judgment, while he always liked to see the good in everyone, he said some people are just no dammed good. But what a song he created from a dream. One of the greatest songs ever written and performed, An Innocent Man being the greatest, followed closely by Vienna. I saw this concert tour in 1994 in London his voice and performance was phenomenal Seen him 10 times in concert, I’ve seen many great artistes live, but when it comes to Billy Joel there is no one better.

The song says that he is looking for something spiritual that he lost along the way and i believe he did find it as he writes in the last verse of this song. No, he's hitting B5 ("we're all carried ALONG, by the river of dreams"), which is what he does on the album version. It is actually 1 tone higher than your summation and it sounds more powerful because it's in the live context. We can SEE the effort going into it. I love it. his voice is better than most people give him credit for. It's not just the highs, it's the soulfulness and grit. A true rock and roll voice.
@samenders1074
@samenders1074 7 жыл бұрын
I'm about a year late, but I was actually referring to that super high note at around 3:54, I suppose it would have been more accurate to say he hits "an A5," plus I don't think he actually does those screams on the album version. I find Billy to be an incredibly underrated singer, especially since he apparently doesn't even like his own singing voice: it's crazy that the same guy sings songs like Stiletto, Zanzibar, Vienna, Don't Ask Me Why, and Tell Her About It, they all sound so different to me. This guy never goes for the same vocal style twice, I love Elton John just as much as I love BJ, but you can pretty much always tell when Elton is singing on a song, whereas BJ is much more fluid.

In the early '90s, my grandpa visits a friend's farm (Horton's farm) in Glastonbury Connecticut. He hears they're filming parts of the River of Dreams music video inside the barn and goes over there for a visit. He proceeds to chat up Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley. Keep in mind, my grandpa has no idea who they are. He calls my mom, living in New Hampshire at the time, and tells her about the experience. She is understandably livid and asks him, "Dad, don't YOU KNOW who BILLY JOEL is? He says, "No, but his wife was awfully nice!" My mom tells me this story years later, and is shocked at how clueless he is about the cultural zeitgeist. Some people are just in the right place at the right time, I guess.

It was a pretty new song at the time so I’m guessing he hadn’t played it as often as songs like piano man and My Life or its only rock n roll to me for instance. It isn’t uncommon for artists playing new material to have a guide to reference until they get comfortable with the arrangement in a live setting. Yes he wrote it and arranged it but it was a new song to the set list so he probably figured having a sheet there to reference was better than not having it and risking forgetting something or blanking on stage and completely botching the song

@@raini9434 it is very cool to think, this is a newly birthed song for them and not one that's already been sung three hundred times.
