These are the exact same shocks/struts combo I have on mine (no air bags, tho). When I did the rears (first) the "jelly butt" feel with axle hop and jitter was reduced big time. Less jarring, slightly firmer, but the overall the feel is smoother with more control. In the cold they are stiffer...but, after driving they smooth out. FWIW - Bilstein is pronounced "Bill Stine". So, many say "Bill Steen" which is wrong. I called the company to verify it when a commenter on my channel decided to stir up some drama -- he prob still lives with his mom and pee's the bed. Hahaa! Anyways, great video...these are premium shocks and def an upgrade to those weak Ranchos. Nice work.

I added both front and back B 5100s and leveled on my GMC 2024 2500 Ultimate. I also added Mickey Thomson Legend EXP tires, 295/65/20 It drives smooth but now it seems to float around on the road and the steering is much more “Loose.” Didn’t do that when it was stock, especially on the highway. I replaced OEM shocks and struts on my 2017 Ram 1500 with Bilstein 5100 and I wasn’t impressed at all. The idea was to do levelling at some point since these (front) are hight adjustable and install 35s one day. Since I still had my original tires I kept it at the factory setting-no lift. I was expecting to have the same ride quality as OEM shocks. What I got instead was a stiffer ride especially in the front and that’s about it. Two years later I had a strut rod go through a strut mount on driver side which caused problems removing it because a spring had to be cut. They also had a lot of surface rust on them for being just two years on this truck. The OEM ones didn’t have that much surface rust. Aside from having that option of adjusting hight and being able to level it you are not getting anything out of Bilstein 5100 and I’m not exaggerating. At least this is what I got on my truck. The OEM shocks are better tuned for the size and the weight of Ram 1500 truck. This is my opinion. I ended up getting a pair of Rancho RS 9000 XL 2.5” strut set with springs and strut mounts and ability to adjust my ride comfort by using a valve (1-9 setting) that comes with shocks. Setting one being the softest and 9 being firmest. Waaaay better option and waaay better ride quality. I’m currently on setting 5 and it feels like I’m riding on OEM. I’ll try it at setting 3 to see if it makes any difference. Rear shocks are still Bilstein 5100 and I can tell the difference. I think I’ll be replacing these with RS 9000 XL as well probably and having them dialled at setting 5 or 7 depending on a load. Some trucks come from the factory with Rancho shocks HOWEVER they are not the same as Rancho RS 9000 XL. They are valved differently! GM trucks are not really known for the “Cadillac” ride quality so that’s why they installed these soft - bouncy shocks to compensate for a stiff ride. The aftermarket RS 9000 XL come with a valve that you can adjust yourself depending on what you want out of them. Bilstein 5100 might be good for you but I wasn’t impressed at all. They didn’t give me anything more than OEM gave me in the first place.

I put these on my 2012 Silverado Z71. Leveled out the front, and added a little stiffness to the rear when towing the camper. I have over a 100,000 miles on them, they still feel like the day I put them on. If I can ever find an RST with max tow, I'll put them on that truck too.

I actually much prefer the ride of the RS5000x. I found the Bilstein 5100 set to be too "bouncy". I like that in my women. I do not like that in my truck. The Ranchos are much more settled and a tighter ride control. So, IMHO the B5100 are not better than RS5000x. That said, any new shock is better than any old worn out shock. Remember, a shock does not have to be leaking to be worn out. Over time the oil shears and the internal valves errode - leading to loose shock.

@@Donslife I get it. I had a 6.2. In a 2017. Was fast but every time I stepped on it I would see my needle move. Not with my 3.0. Thank you for sharing

I hear you. The 3.0 diesel was not that easy to find when I purchased my truck, so it wasn't really an option for me. I would consider it now.

Will this fit on 2022 silverado 1500 custom
@Donslife Жыл бұрын
Yes but a different part number. Check out their website for exact fitment options. The AT4’s and Trail Bosses have very specific part numbers

Thanks for the great video, Don! I drive a ‘23 Yukon XL AT4 with factory air-ride; an amalgamation of your two trucks. Would you recommend the same shocks for my Yuke?
@Donslife Жыл бұрын
Thank you. I would say that the quality difference is noticeable and won’t break the bank. If you only drive on very smooth roads, the difference may not be as apparent. Where I live, we put our suspensions to work and not always by choice

Maintenance 101: loosen the nut, not the bolt head. Torque will be more accurate too.

I hear eibach pro trucks are smoother than bilstein! I wish more people can review them as well

Nice vid! Are you compressing the shocks a few times before installing? Or is that not necessary? Thinking of replacing the stock ranchos on my 2018 silverado ltz with about 66k miles. Not a necessary upgrade right now as i think they work fine, but might consider the bilsteins

I have a chevy LT 2021 1500 Has anyone had it were the back end of their silverado 2019-2024 when they hit a larger bump the back end makes a loud bang noise. Now saying so im not purposely targeting the biggest pot holes. I just mean like normal dips in the highway and road that cant be avoided. My truck rear end will bang loudly and feels kinda as a hop. Not sure if its what is mentioned here. But kinda lost on what i can do.

Questions: How are the new shocks? Also, is the borla attack louder now? Thanks
@Donslife2 жыл бұрын
Shocks seem better in every way. Especially for the reasonable cost. I have the Borla S-Type so I’m not sure how to answer that

Decided to put these on my Sierra partially based on your video so really appreciate you uploading videos like this one! Quick question, I am assuming these did not drop your towing capacity or bed payload? I ready some shocks can cause those numbers to go down. Based on what I could find it did not seem like these would change the capacity, just wanted to confirm if you found anything.

loosen the nut instead of the bolt. Your supposed to torque the nut not the bolt for more accurate torque

Just put Bilstein 6112s in the front along with Bilstein UCAs. 5160s in the rear with the Resivours. Duramax AT4 2021. Have hated Rancho shocks since I was a teen in my 1980 4wd Chev Luv. The ride is always terrible with ranchos. Hated then then and I hate them still and I can afford whatever I want now. Hey ranch-lo lick my taint.
@bc4evernow10 ай бұрын
Garbage on heavier trucks. Daily driving is stiff. Great off road but you will suffer daily on a heavier truck. Go with rancho or fox.
