This is an install and review of the Bilstein 6112 off road suspension upgrade for the GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado. This completes my Bilstein suspension upgrade with the 6112's up front and the 5160's in the rear. With the new 2021 Ram TRX announcement bringing the Bilstein Black Hawk e2 shocks I am sure a lot of people will be finding these 6112's for their trucks and I can honestly say, they are amazing.

Thank you for an excellent video review, I am purchasing these exact shocks on the front and rear of my truck hopefully this Friday, currently I get seasick and nauseous when I ride in the truck as it has stock heavy duty shocks, as opposed to stock shocks… Or the sport shot package from Ford. I literally don’t want to drive the truck until I get the suspension fixed because it’s truly upsetting to the stomach, I’m really hoping this new Bilstein 6112 front & 5160 rear suspension package will do the job, I’m told these are the best and I am paying whatever it takes to have the perfect ride in my Ford F150 2018, thank you again for supporting the decision I made a day before watching this✌️✨

Dude I literally just had my 6112's and 5160's installed a couple days after you uploaded this review, what a coincidence. I must say your review is spot on, they don't make your truck a hero and the K2XX platform will always ride "stiff" but wow the control these dampers have compared to the stock Rancho's is insane. You ever notice how when you go over a speed bump too fast the front wheel just rebound like there's not even a damper there and you hear a loud crash like someone hit your dashboard with a hammer? Then afterwards there are like one or two extra body movements as the truck settles back down again lol. That's the big thing I noticed doesn't happen any more thanks to these.

That hammer sound is the UCA coming in contact with the "service stop" on the frame. It's GM's way of limiting down travel in the suspension.

Ive been running the 6112’s on my Ram for little over 6 months now. They’re amazing! Paired with a better control arm, and you get some great wheel travel and articulation. These shocks still amaze me at what they can take. I did make the mistake of putting 5100 on the back though. Probably be upgrading to 5160 soon. Didn’t think I’d be off-roading as much as I do 😂

Yeah the 6112’s are really incredible and I enjoy taking speed bumps at speed now instead of slowly and bouncy. The 5160’s are awesome for the rear, I never tried the 5100’s, I just went top of the Bilstein line when I did the rear and certainly dont regret it.

I really dont want to use spacers to do it and how did your upper control arms look after install? Were they all off and goofy looking? Hello Dan! First time visitor to your site here and simply amazed! I even subscribed, right off before the end. I myself have installed Bilstein 5100’s front and rear in my 2019 Colorado WT Crew Cab, 4x4,V6. That I’m totally impressed with, even though I felt the stock struts/shocks on the WT trim level actually rode better than whatever Chevy uses on the 2016 Colorado Z71 Ext Cab I had before. I just can’t for the life of me figure why GM can’t just make the Bilstein available, across the board! Especially the higher end types. See I tow a 26’, 4,400-6,400lb travel trailer, all nice an level at a CGVW over a Cat Scale, totally loaded with a mobility scooter in the bed and everything my wife and two dogs needed for a weeks trip! All with plenty of power to maintain legal speed limits, on any grade of roads I’ve been over. Yes ok I live in Florida and have never driven up the Ike, but we have been up over the Smokey Mountains and through Virginia. Thebes’s part is the control with less harshness. Plus with either the 5100, or above Bilstein systems you also get more suspension travel, something you don’t get with in my opinion are worthless strut spacers! So good luck have fun and stay safe and healthy and keep your site going!

@@garbinator09 hello Gary! AT4’s are very nice! I feel you would be very satisfied with the ride and handling of any Bilstien upgrades, they go from the 4100 an up over a few levels of cost and hight and performance enhancements! The 5100, is really only the second wrung up the ladder. But with just the small amount of extra suspension travel, along with the improvements in dampening are well worth the investment. I could have gone 1/3” higher that I did, but I wanted to have the ability for at least 1,000 lbs, or towing my trailer ready to go with the truck and trailer as heavy as I need, nice and level, with a good ride and control as well as possible. Since the 5100’s we installed, I have not bottomed out the front or rear for that matter, anywhere I used to. On a long trip at night, my wife was driving and cut an intersection at an off ramp taking a left turn too tight, with the driver side front wheel hitting a huge hole at the edge of the median, that I was sure had damaged the alloy wheel! I mean this was a huge hit, that was actually absorbed quite well, not as hard as I know it would have been with the stock struts, as the springs are still original! But afterwards I checked the wheel to be sure an nothing was amiss. I now have fun amusing myself running over speed bumps! That have not caused a bottoming out yet, up to a fairly sane 45 mph! If it’s not too late I would highly suggest you look into the 5100’s, that can be bought off EBay at times, I found mine there, both front and rear for just under $500, but I’ll warn you retail in the Bilstien catalog is almost $700!! But still worth it to me! Just cheap spacers cost $100, with the labor an alignment the same! So why go through all that labor/cost to save $400-$600? When for the money you get better dampening all around and the exact lift, now actually from 0-2.6”! With the added option for 1” blocks raising the rear?!

I thought I’d do a wee more shopping before committing to the upgrade. Also, on GMC/Canyon forums, I cannot get any response to Fox complete system upgrade being well worth the $$$ for 2021 GMC Canyon AT-4. So, I going easy not sweating over much of it. To me, coming from a lowered car on coil overs, stiffer means firm with hard hits to your spine. Not looking for pre-runner soft, but don't want race car coil over stiff.

I am not sure there is any downside, I was just trying to keep the spring rate not TOO firm even though it probably isnt a huge difference between the two settings. I like keeping the front of the truck a LITTLE lower for the sake of how it will sit loaded.

At the highest setting, it will put the cv axles at a greater angle but nothing to be concerned about. Some guys have noted that 2.5" lifts and greater is when you start experiencing vibrations and excessive wear. I done the bilstein 6112 shocks at the highest setting along with a spacer above the strut which totaled up to 2.5" of lift and didn't notice any vibrations. The angles also did not look that bad. Shortly after though, I done a 1" differential drop that corrected the angles.

Sorry to hear that. So the evolution for me was I did the 5160’s on the rear and noticed a little improvement, then I did a driveshaft swap which got rid of most the shake, and the 6112’s came after. If your truck has the 8 speed which I believe it does, try to have the dealer do the Mobil 1 blue label synthetic which seems to help a lot.

That vibration issue could be your transmission fluid. sound crazy but I have a 2017 Silverado 1500 6.2L that had a vibration issue. took it to the dealer and they told me that my transmission fluid has condensation in it. It had 68k so the trans fluid was never replaced. they put in a new grade of trans fluid (expensive) and my vibration went away.
@mikes318
@mikes318 3 жыл бұрын
@@gregc247 I have changed to the Dorman after dealer installed another OE driveshaft on my '17. I found the new one they installed had .047" runout. Dorman has less than .010" runout. Seemed to make the shake slightly less violent but did not go away. Dealer has also changed the complete rear axle assembly, F&R shocks, leaf springs, one front spring, multiple road force balances. Truck was in the shop for 110 days. I also tried the spring clamps and finally I added 2 degree shims. All this made it better (about half as bad) for a bit with the 2 degree shims making the most difference. I also changed to aftermarket wheels and Cooper tires which made no difference at all. 25k miles after all the repairs and another set of tires it is back to being just as bad as day one. Next I plan to try new 9/16 U-bolts. Maybe they are stretching? I too have the 6 speed so it does not qualify for the TSB on trans fluid. After filing BBB complaint GM offered 4 free oil changes and tire rotations. With that said if you want any action you will have to hire an attorney like Gears & Gadgets did. This is not an option for me since mine is a company truck and they seem to be concerned very little. They don't have to drive it everyday. So I just keep spending their money on parts.

I classify debatable word pronunciation comments about as fun and intriguing as random strangers thinking hot or cold observations are worthy of conversation.
