When it comes to lifting and leveling your truck you've got a lot of options, here we break down the differences between three popular options: the Fox 2.0 Performance coilover, the Bilstein 6112, and Rancho's Quicklift.

I think most viewers would benefit greatly from a discussion about progressive vs digressive shocks. Fox are progressive, meaning they start out soft and get stiffer towards the end of travel. They will ride softer on road for small bumps and give some body roll. Bilsteins are digressive, meaning they start out stiff and get softer towards end of travel. They will ride harsher on road with less body roll but give better control. Digressive shocks are terrible on washboard dirt roads because of this stiffness. Both shocks will perform excellent in offroad extreme conditions.

Have been researching shocks and suspension quite a lot recently. I was going in a direction of Bilstein 6112/5160 as many reviews say they are great as this video suggests. My main purpose of upgrading from stock shocks is to go comfortably fast off-road mostly on corrugated/washboards. So, Bilstein 6112/5160 is probably not good choice according to your comment. Thanks for this info.

I can attest to this. I have a set of 5100's on 06 tundra 2wd set at the max lift position on the body. These shocks suck on washboard/ripple top of dirt roads. Unless you basically crawl or idle they will beat you and your truck to death. I always thought it was the spring position that made these shocks perform like this. I wish I knew this before I bought these. I'm going to replace them with a progressive shock

2023 1500 AT4, I just installed the assembled 6112's from Shock Surplus. I also did the Bilstein 5160's in the rear. AMAZING! Seriously the truck handles like a sports car. 90% of my driving is on pavement, city streets, potholes, jumping curbs etc. Rather than save a few bucks, I wanted to do my suspension upgrade once and Right! Body roll, lane changes caused by train tracks, bumps, bed bounce gone. I can feel the shocks take road imperfections/bumps and push the wheels right back to the pavement. I watched countless KZbin videos before spending the money. Though Shock Surplus got a little technical at times (fast forward), the guys describing their real on road experience was spot on. The 6120's are set at stock height (AT4 Factory 2" lift), anything higher requires upper control arm I was told. Thanks

I have had the 6112’s on my Tundra for over 100k miles now. 5100’s in the rear. I had 5100’s on all 4 corners on 2 previous Toyota trucks I owned. The 6112’s ride amazing. They soak up the whoops at ~25mph in the sand up at the Outer Banks way better than the 5100’s did. Street/daily driving is better than stock IMO. Just bought my wife a Sequoia and I’ll be putting 6112’s on it 👍.

It would probably be best to lean towards something that comes loaded with a set of coil springs like the 6112s or Fox2.0s for the front. 5100s do not come with spring seats or springs, so all of those parts would have to be sourced individually making it more cost effective to step up to something that comes loaded/built or at least has springs and seats. If most of your off road use is done at lower speeds, and it you are spending the majority of your time on pavement, you will probably prefer the softer ride of the 2.0s

Here's an experience that may help someone make a decision.... I Wish I would have known this info when I put FOX on my 2016 SCREW 4x4. For the first few days, 100% highway use I was a bit bummed by the firmer/harsher ride. But holy moly, the first time I took it out on a fire road and into Johnson Valley's whooped-out access roads, I was literally giggling like a little kid. Then there's inevitable "DIP" that separates streets in my neighborhood that I don't even slown for and just laugh how the truck hardly cares with the FOX shocks. Having said all that, i'm putting the Billstein Ford Performanc 6112 kit on my 2022 SCREW 4x4 with the rear reservoir shocks. I just don't do enough "off-road" to justify the harsher everyday ride.

I just got new 5100 for the rear of my tundra. Waiting to put them on because my lifted leaf springs are not in yet. Couldn’t really be precise with you since I don’t have them on, nor are the leaf springs stock, but I think that they will ride nicely. On the front I have some rough country n3 2” lifted struts. They actually ride pretty nice, and can take a beating if you know what I mean. If I was going to make it just that much nicer, I would maybe put the bilsteins on the front, but the rc n3’s are actually quite nice. Whatever you do, get a diff drop kit for the front and a carrier bearing drop for the back, trust me, you’ll want it, especially on a tundra.

My control arms are pushed to the limit and constantly tear the boots and the ride is very rough. I want to keep the lifted look and run 33" tires. Do you have a suggestion on which would be my best solution? Would the adjustable shocks replace my lift and level out my control arm? Please help🙏
@ShockSurplus
@ShockSurplus Жыл бұрын
The adjustable shocks would replace the strut spacer from Rough Country, a 2.0 shock option will only get you to about 2-2.5" of lift (Fox, Eibach, Bilstein 5100). So if you need that max 3.5" of lift to clear tires (depending on your 33s specifically), then you may need to go to a Fox/King/Icon 2.5 shock, which can be pushed to the 3" or 3.5" of lift in the front. You'll end up keeping the UCAs in either switch-over, but would love to dive into more details - support@shocksurplus.com / 213-433-3616

Depends on how you're lifting it. It's no ideal to run spacers but in most lift kits, that's the only way to achieve the higher lifts as not many people are making full coil overs that give you that amount. You would set any strut or coilover at a factory height or 0" then retain the spacer in whichever company you deice to go with.

Bilstein is going to be the best handling option out of the two, but not necessarily the most comfortable. Fox is going to be more comfortable, with some minor handling improvement (over factory). There's no best option here, both are great, its what is best for your specific use-case or needs. If you're carrying heavy loads, towing, or camping with a lot of equipment and want better handling for any of the above, then Bilstein. If you want a more plush ride, and comfort on the daily drive or easy trails is what you're looking for, than we'd recommend Fox 2.0 Its digressive vs linear shocks here, so baseline behavior is significantly different - its not the same shock with different branding like a lot of people think.

which vehicle? The 6112 wont reduce the chatter that much compared to the 5100, you should go with a softer option like Eibach or Fox 2.0s. If you have no budget and want to buy once / cry once - the Old Man Emu BP51 system is one of the best in terms of comfort, or Dobinsons MRR - being able to adjust compression and rebound can produce really nice comfort

Technically you could preload the spring even more, but not advised in the least. The shock cant handle that much rebound force, you'll probably bottom/top out the shock on any reasonable obstacle or bump, which leads to premature faliure. Fox will also know, and wont warranty it once it fails.

HEADS UP.....Things people need to know; Strut lift just doesnt feel as good as spacer lifted. Bilstein should be slapped with the bills I got stuck with. Strut lift seems to put stress on the springs. Its so bad the truck was out of level left to right. It takes away from articulation. Gives you a little bunny hop action...They would clunk over pot holes or speed bumps at slowish speeds...Spacer lift maintains spring comfort and the truck is level side to side. It feels like bone stock instead of overloaded.
@ShockSurplus
@ShockSurplus Жыл бұрын
That is quite interesting in your case. We ran Bilstein 5100 on various vehicle while retaining the factory OEM springs and all set to high settings on multiple vehicles in our fleet. None were proven to be a uncomfortable ride and actually benefit us in various ways. We think you might have the spring perch installed in the wrong direction which can result is putting a ton of preload outside the circlip specs. Spacer do provide you the lift and look but other than that, it does not provide any functional travel, articulation, or comfort. Suspension lift do provide better functional usage than a spacer would.
