In today's trail test we compare two similar Toyota 4Runner's head to head: One with the 5100 series shocks up front and the other with the 6112 series. We know the 6112 is beefier and should be "better", but how much of a difference do we feel and at what point is it worth it to spring for the upgrade and go with the 6112s? Tune in to find out.

If you did a "blind test" with the same rig, on the same section of trail, you probably couldn't tell the difference. I think the 6112 shines when used on heavier rigs, such as the Tundra. I have owned both and that's what I have observed.

This was my thinking EXACTLY! 5100s seem adequate for a Tacoma with no extra load. If you add extra fuel, racks, steel bumpers, full size spare, etc, then they make more sense. Perfect setup for the heavy ass Tundra tho.

We can also help get 5100 assembled by running an ARB or Eibach spring as well but you end up spending quite close to the cost of a Bilstein 61112

I bought the 6112s with the Bilstein springs from you guys and also bought the 5100s for the rear Of my fifth generation TRDORP. If you hear of anybody in the Oklahoma City area wanting to do a test drive send them my way. I would also like to ride with someone that has the 5100s for the front and rear. The difference in the suspension with this new set up is night and day between the stock set up. Absolutely love the 6112s in the front. I probably need to do the icon springs for the back though. Still feels a little mushy with the stock springs. Thanks to you guys at Shock surplus. Very prompt in the delivery and they were set up exactly as I requested.

Much appreciate on offering anyone local people would like to test ride your vehicle. That is really nice of you to offer that. We also have offered that for local people to get a ride along in our rigs like the SDI setup. The pleasure is all ours. If you or anyone needs any help, please contact us directly and we'll help steer you in the right direction.

I got the 6112 on my 3rd gen for the front cause I wanted to use it a little heavy in the SoCal desert. I’m not big into slow rock crawling. I mainly like faster trails with whoops and stuff so I figured 6112 were the cheapest way to get close to a fox, king, icon suspension for way less cost. I’m thinking the wider shock body will prevent wear and tear and maintain lower temps. Obviously I’d love a rebuildable shock but I can’t justify spending 2-4 grand on a suspension setup for a near 30 year old vehicle.

Was that setting on the none KDSS fronts to compensate for the drivers side lean .? Was it level on those settings?
@ShockSurplus
@ShockSurplus 8 ай бұрын
Yup that is exactly it. Pretty much any strut that includes a spring needs to have the preload set a little higher on the driver side to correct for lean on Non KDSS Toyotas. This 5th gen ended up bein almost perfectly level on the driver and passenger sides when we measured. I do not have the exact numbers but if I remember correctly it was within a few millimeters, and we know our shop floor where we measured it is not perfectly flat, so in the real world it was probably absolutely dead on.

Does the Bilstein 5100 instruction tell you which strut go on which side (driver vs passenger) and if the lift notch should be the same on both struts?
@ShockSurplus
@ShockSurplus 8 ай бұрын
The 5100s do not get an offset for circlip settings and are not side specific. They use the stock coils on the front struts so lean is far less of a concern. 6112s by comparison do get offset two circlip settings higher on the driver side for 4Runners without KDSS.

@@ShockSurplus appreciate it! My 5100 order from you is arriving soon and I want to make sure if install it correctly. My final question is which stock spring should go on which side (assuming I removed them and then mixed up and forgot). One spring has one more coil/spiral than the other.

I'm leaning toward the 6112 fronts w/ 5160 rears for my 2019 SR5 Premium. I am pulling the third row seat and all accessories for it as I never use it and don't need the weight back there. I only want to level the front to the rear, so which rear spring do I go with, if any? I have heard a few times the SR5 Premium w/ 3rd row seats had heavier springs in the back over non-3rd row Runners. Would love your input. Cheers.

@ShockSurplus
@ShockSurplus 6 ай бұрын
If you are just trying to level it, you could even stand to keep the stock spring in the rear if you are okay with keeping it a 1.5-1.75" of lift in the front. Otherwise if you want it to sit higher you will just want to make sure you look at standard rate rear coils and you do 1.5-1.75" more lift in the front. So if you were to go with a 1" rear spring like Bilstein B12 36-281817 you want 2.5-2.75" of lift in the front. For anything over 2.5" of lift it will be a good idea to upgrade the upper control arms.

This videos shows the 6112 and 5100 set up vs 5100 full set up. The 5160 is the same as the 5160 in terms on valving, but with an external reservoir which will help the smaller 2" body last longer on a trail without fading out.

As long as you have the the proper part to run a 3.5" lift then you're fine. In some cases people run a spacer for the KDSS to help with the angle.

@trailrunnah8886
@trailrunnah8886 Жыл бұрын
3.5" is really too high to go on a IFS 4Runner, unless you're doing a full long travel suspension. At 3.5, your downtravel is going to be pretty much maxed out just sitting still and it's not going to function very well in action. Also, you're probably not going to be able to get it aligned correctly. Watch videos by Tinkerer's Aventures to learn more about IFS Toyota setups.

Cant really compare control with one vehicle having beefier tires.. need to take that into consideration, some of it is the shocks and the rest could just be the tire difference.

Both were on the same size tires with nearly identical weights, but when we are talking about control we are talking about their tendency towards resisting unwanted body motions and managing large suspension events.
