This was filmed in September 1977, a few weeks before Crosby died. Bowie said that Crosby was friendly but mentally deteriorating; he introduced himself to Bowie 3-4 times over the course of filming. Watching this video, you'd never know that Crosby was dying. He carried that amazing singing voice all the way to his grave.

Bowie and Crosby had this really cool low baritone note they used often; with that certain low tone- Bowie often sounded like Bing.

I really don't think Crosby was deteriorating mentally here - his timing seems right on queue. Also he wasn't exactly dying. He had some health issues but he died rather suddenly a month later in Spain after participating in 18 holes of golf.

It was the combination of a couple very quirky tv producers and Bowie's mother's love of Bing Crosby that made it happen. They get the credit for putting together the icons of two different ages to create one of the holiday season's most immortal duets, one that will outlive us all. I was fortunate enough to be watching that show that night.

I saw this when it aired and remember how astonishing it was at the time for us younger people. At that time we really felt the generation gap and there was nothing so strange as to see these two together, especially since Bowie was known for pushing the envelope with his music and wild outlandish personas, while Bing was firmly from the mid-century big band era and fit comfortably singing that generation's old standards in his cardigan. Both Bing and Bowie were consummate professionals however, and great singers in their own style, and so the result was beautiful. This performance brought the generations a little closer that Christmas Season.

Well stated! Groundbreaking in so many ways. It never occurred to either generation that such a thing was possible. It was talked about for a very long time and influenced other artists to push THAT envelope. No one thinks anything of it today. We take duets such as this one for granted but this was a defining moment in music and television history.

Rebecca Edwards: in the music industry, age makes no difference. Their music are from one pole to the other. But it's just a good job & a wonderful thing to have Bowie & Crosby just come together & sing a Christmas song. Lady Gaga got together with Tony Bennett; Tony Bennett is a veteran singer like the late Old Blue eyes. Tony Bennett is a great singer & loves Madonna. Although I don't know if they ever came together singing a Christmas song. If they did, it would be an instant hit...

Yes this song really does his voice justice. I see this as his “pure” tenor like voice. The same voice he used on songs such as Letter to Hermione, Cygnet Committee and When I Live My Dream. He was a master at switching from a rock sound, to an almost musical theatre voice and as and even a more resonant baritone in later years. Even his speaking voice was great to listen to.

Hard to believe that David Bowie is no longer with us. I remember when they did this on TV for the very first time. I think it surprised a lot of people to see David Bowie doing a duet with Bing Crosby. By this time Bing was regarded as a bit square and definitely part on my parents' generation (And I'm 61) David Bowie on the other hand was super cool and super modern and always at the cutting edge of pop and pop culture. It was brilliant to see them doing this and doing it so well, the generation gap well and trully bridged by two great entertainers. Bless them both, may they rest in peace.

Thank you for sharing, John! Your words really resonated with me and my own sentiments regarding this song, and I wondered if you might appreciate an additional fact on it. In late 2020, I learned through an ordinary internet search for facts about this song that it was recorded on September 11, 1978. To think that exactly 24 years to the day before 9/11 occured, two men from two different generations and countries would get together and sing such a beautiful song praying for peace on earth and goodwill among humanity gets me every time it comes to mind! Something that especially touches me is when David Bowie shares before they sing that his son was 6 at the time they recorded the song, and he soon sings the line that his child would see a "day when men of goodwill would live in peace again." Interestingly, I've felt called to serve in response to 9/11 longer-term and plan to move from my home in Maryland to greater NYC (likely North Jersey) to do so. Since I was born in 1995, I was the age his son was on 9/11 (age 6). I've started listening to this song year-round as my sense of calling has developed, as it reminds me to do my part to work towards the vision Bing Crosby and David Bowie sang about all those years ago and to do what I can to encourage others to do the same thing. While I've always loved it, this song has become so dear to me with these thoughts in mind over the past two years. I hope and pray their masterpiece can help many others in their own ways! 💙🙏🏻🇺🇸🇬🇧🌏 Best wishes and blessings for you and your loved ones from Harford County, MD, for Christmas, 2023, and always! 🙏🏻🎄☃️

The behind the scenes trivia for this is amazing... the only reason David did this show was for his mother, she was a huge Bing Crosby fan. David absolutely hated The Little Drummer Boy...& was about to just not sing it at all when the show's song writers went off & wrote Peace On Earth (can it be) as a counter point song to Bing singing The Little Drummer Boy. Thanks to those writers they saved the number & we ended up with a very special moment on camera & an incredibly touching & beautiful Christmas song

The Little Drummer Boy is a song that epitomizes what Christmas is all about. You don't have to be rich or buy gifts in order to celebrate the birth of Jesus, a King. I think something happened in David's life in the mid 70s. after this period there really werent any more personas, and there was a big change in his lyrical content. He also achieved success like he hadn't before. At Freddie's tribute he insisted he be allowed to lead everyone in prayer.
@tmage23

He lost himself in the Thin White Duke. Developed a debilitating cocaine habit, became sort of obsessed with fascism and the occult. That's the last real "persona" although he kept changing his image throughout the rest of his life, he would remain "David Bowie" from then on.
