I’d just like to propose what I believe is a fact: “Indian Summer” is the greatest popular song ever composed by an Irishman, the Trinity College, Dublin, educated Victor Herbert. His turn-of-the (20th) century success in operetta and light classical music was enormous in New York and The States in general, and this fantastically inspired melody was later given a top- class lyric by, I believe, Al Dubin. It is a matter of (constantly repeated) record that it was Count Basie’s single favorite song.
