Bing Crosby & Friends - Misto Cristofo Columbo (Here Comes the Groom)

Bing sings this catchy number from Ray Evans and Jay Livingston from Frank Capra's 1951 film "Here Comes the Groom." Joining Bing on the vocals are Louis Armstrong, Cass Daley, Dorothy Lamour, Phil Harris, and Frank Fontaine (in character as Crazy Gugenheim.) Enjoy!

Crazy Gugenheim!! That took me by surprise! Then again, if you're a movie buff you HAVE to watch this film for it's cast (there are some very familiar faces in this film not listed in the credits, including Armstrong, Crazy and Cass Daley here--I think Phil Harris popped up in this thing too--many others). Crosby and Armstrong absolutely adored each other and both influenced each other's music. Incidentally, Crosby always maintained Armstrong was one of the best ever singers (in addition to his groundbreaking work on his instrument). In 1936 Bing was set to star in what would become one of the top-grossing films of the year, Pennies from Heaven. In spite of opposition from the producers, Bing insisted that Louis Armstrong be given a role and top billing in the film. It was the first time a black actor shared top billing with white actors in a major film. I think that demonstrates Crosby's affection and appreciation of Louis Armstrong. Maybe not as great a cinematic moment for them as the "Now You Has Jazz" number in "High Society" (they had a better tune there to be honest!) but it's always a treat to catch these two legendary artists performing together--thanks!
