But on the Parkinson interview this quote was mentioned to Bing by David Parkinson and he was apparently quoting Sinatra. Believe me I am a huge huge fan of Bing Crosby's and I have heard the quote a fair few times and referencing Bing to Frank and vice versa. I know Sinatra idolised Bing and Bing was very generous of his praise to Frank during the interview whilst considerably down playing his own very amazing talents.

I dunno I love them both! Sinatra himself adored Bing and credited him for inventing the entire idea of being a "crooner".

Bing was such a game changer. Sure, I think somebody would've eventually come along that had the same effect, but Bing really used technology to his advantage. Let amplification do all the work, and created a singing style that was more intimate than the theatre filling belters of ages prior. I love both singers so much, but you've really got to take your hat off for Crosby, because the man changed singing.

Sinatra was technically a crooner in the beginning of his career, singing mainly for the big orchestras, but as time went by, he became more like a "singer", a huge interpreter. All you have to do is just compare his earlier version of Ol' Man River to his other one some years later to see the difference

Bing Crosby was the crooner in the 1930's with the teenagers, then the next generation Frank Sinatra in the 1940's then the 1950's with Elvis, the 1960's the Beatles, the 1990's boy band like In Sync, Boys to Men, New kids on the block, etc. Groups, singers may change but still the same of teenagers going crazy for those songs, bands, groups or singers.

This is Hollywood when it was at its best. A great story taken from The Philadelphia Story, combined with a marvelous Cole Porter score, none better, then add to it the talent of Crosby, Sinatra, and Grace Kelly and you have a really great movie. The Porter song True Love from this film was nominated for an Oscar, only to lose to, either When you wish Upon a Star, or. Que Sera, can't remember exactly. Just goes to show you what was coming out when there was talent. Crosby and Sinatra are great together on screen.

And don't forget to give a little credit to director Chuck Walters who knew just how to stage such a piece as this. He later said -- as is well known -- that Sinatra did not like to rehearse. So he (Walters) would do the Sinatra part while rehearsing with Bing. Sinatra then watched Walters run through it with Bing and picked up some bits of business that he used when it came time to film it. Both actor/singers picked up some things from Walters, the dance master. For example, that little bit toward the end as they exit the library the second time -- where they're dancing their little jigs. Then in unison, they step on their back foot, lean backwards and kick out their front legs. That was classic Chuck Walters

True, he was that good, especially as a comedian, but he lacked the drive to be the best and Sinatra, best or not, was possessed by it. He didn't begin to relinquish control of his career until the late '60's. Dean would stroll in off the golf course, sing over prerecorded tracks and waltz right back out there. This year is his centennial. Heard anything? I haven't.

I must have heard this ten thousand times. My father was an amateur singer who would practice at home in the kitchen. He was absolutely brillant, just lacked a bit of confidence. He was a match for Crosby, Sinatra, Dean Martin, Perry Como or any of the crooners of that era. I really can hear my father singing when I hear this.👍 Sadly age has taken its toll on his hearing. Nowadays he can hardly hear at all so he hasn't sung for a while and probably never will now. 😢

It's interesting that I just finished watching a show about Frank Sinatra life on tv, some say this was he's best acting work. Apparently it's the only time Frank and Bing sang together and Bing was Sinatra favourite singers. I always thought this movie belongs to Grace Kelly which is why I found the comments interesting because they are right Frank and Bing both shine in the movie too.

I'm only 16 and while I do like some music from now mostly country rock this is my favourite type of music my grandmother used to play me her records when I went to see her she gave me her record player and all her records for my 15th birthday. I actually have a copy of his That's Life record signed and it's my most prized possesion I wouldn't give it up for anything.
