Actually, a lot of us did. Some lived alone, some with others, or with others in separate lofts with shared bathrooms Artists, musicians... in 1982, you could rent a huge loft like that in lower town St Paul, Minnesota, for about $300.00 a month. With parking right in front of the building. I know because I moved in with someone who was renting just such a loft. I cherish those memories now because at the time, we had no idea just how good we had it, so the experience of loft living was taken for granted. I feel sorry for the young people today; I wish they could have experiences like that...

@@hamsterdiving7593 Yeah it must have been amazing. That also went for the cost of tuition, a car and living in general. I have been at the tail end of that in some ways, being born in the 70s and from Wisconsin. My Grandfather built a lake house in the 30s and he was just a baker, so we grew up on the lake even though we were pretty financially strapped. In the early 90s, my sister's now husband had a big amazing loft in Milwaukee right out of college. They had incredible parties with whole bands and were just college kids. My first apartment in Minneapolis in 1996 was a 1 BR for $400. I lived in Madison, WI in the late 90s and shared a nice 4 bedroom flat with 3 others, the whole rent was $1060 so we all each only paid $265. They were all grad students who got PhDs with no student debt, and afforded a car, small vacations and a decent lifestyle. It was a real sticker shock moving to San Francisco where studio apartments in the worst part of town were $600 back in 2000. The place I rent in the Bay Area suburbs with my partner now is $3000. I had no idea housing costs would go up as fast as they have. Our rent increase this month when we renewed our lease was $250/month, or $3000/year. We can barely keep up, sure would be nice to have rent that's only $300!

True, in 1990s with 2 of my roommates I rented an entire 3 bedroom house just for $500/mo. And it was near Williamsburg where there were a lot of students.
