In real life there was never a big shootout and none of Billy's gang escaped. They were all captured and it was Charlie Bowdre who was shot and killed coming out of the house. Hollywood needed a more exciting scene than that though lol

Yeah, and in real life, Doc didn't get killed. He lived until the 1920s. In the movie, the way Doc died, which was actually how Charlie Bowdre went out. I read somewhere that Kiefer Sutherland made them kill his character off because he had other things going on when this movie was being filmed.
