@@glittercatstudios No engineer in his right mind who has spent any time riding a motorcycle or moped in the rain is going to believe that that roof will protect him. All it will do is change the way the water hits him. Yes, it's better than nothing, but the statement is wishful thinking or misleading at the very least, your capital letters notwithstanding. The windshield is more protection than the 'roof'. It's an open air vehicle. Ride it in the rain and you're going to get soaked. Period.

That was my thought exactly. Rain frequently comes at you at an angle. So will spray from passing vehicles. It should have removable, lockable doors to protect from the weather and to protect your belongings. It should have a larger motor too, but I understand that’s not an option in much of Europe.
@RobinWootton4 жыл бұрын
I understand the roof would look inadequate to a habitual car user. However I've ridden miles with wet glasses; rain running down my collar despite scarf; and eventually permeating my cagoule zip. Verily I do say - in conjunction with the blatant requirement for sensible outdoor clothing - this torso-roof will be a God-sent shelter, to the happy user of the machine. Subscribed years ago to support Mr Lewellyn, after seeing him look a bit forlorn in Carpool (which as it turns out, became a genre-defining gem that he can be proud of!) Great to see this channel taking off. I'm positive there is a market for less polluting vehicles. Living only ten miles from the city centre I don't need a car, but this cycle video caught my eye as an option for those fed up of sitting in the traffic jams that I go sailing past. There must be travelling professionals, who wish to go faster and greener, but are unable or unwilling to pedal with full exertion throughout the day.

A lifetime ago I studied engineering. Something ignored but hugely important in transport is a ratio. Live load (The Human) to dead load (The vehicle). The single person in a Hummer would be a terrible ratio 80Kg / 2900Kg = 0.028. A person on an electric bicycle would be a fantastic ratio 80Kg / 25Kg = 3.2. It uses energy to move weight. Traveling to work alone in your Hummer is moving the same weight as 28 people going to work on electric bicycles!!!!

Robert, you might want to have a look at the "Twike" as well! I would love to see it appear on your show. The Twike is a three-wheeled electric car developed in Switzerland and produced in Germany today. The thing about the Twike: It has pedals but is a real car (well, except for having only one wheel at the front and two of those at the back as opposed to some famous British sportscar engeneering). That allows it to have a considerable amount of power and, given its very low weight, decent speed and range plus the ability to do sports on your commute. You can cycle on the Autobahn! \^^/ Also, the Twike has been produced for more than 20 years now. On the other side, there's the price: It is shitty expensive compared to "normal" production cars due to the fact that the Twike is only produced in little numbers. But they are actually developing a new model I would love to hear something about from you and which could maybe change that. This new model won't have direct pedal-to-wheel drive but charge the battery when you pedal. Hope you were able to understand what I was trying to tell you and that I will meet the Twike in this show soon! Mit freundlichen Grüßen aus Deutschland, Ernst

@BlameItOnGreg8 жыл бұрын
The biggest issue with this type of vehicle is that it doesn't really fit into existing infrastructure; not particularly safe or societally acceptable on the road, but too big for the vast majority of bike lanes and paths, and definitely not pedestrian area acceptable. These will really only fit in in small communities, like the type of places that you currently have people going around in golf cart type vehicles.
@bhtooefr8 жыл бұрын
It's actually not really any wider than the space that needs to be allocated for a conventional bicycle, though - the rider's arms (and panniers if present) stick out pretty far, and the space required for balancing increases width even more. This doesn't need to maneuver for balancing, and the spec sheet says it's 850 mm, which is narrower than my recumbent tricycle (at 864).

This is a great spec machine for commuting. People have to realise the sides are open for ease of entry, weight reduction and cross wind management. Covered e bikes like this one have night and day advantages over 2 wheel e bikes in bad weather because of the roof which will keep most of the rain off the rider and also because of the sheer comfort. Ive owned Quest and Rotovelio trikes (both with roofs). This bike is probably slower than my machines were. E assist motors can limit top speed potential but they make great sense for commuting where a sweat free ride to work is required. This bikes advantage over faster low slung velomobiles is it is higher and thus more visible plus its much easier to get in and out of. You get praise and crowds of viewers whenever you stop so thoughts of bad vibes from the public are not a reality. Covered high visibility e assist bikes like this one for commuting will be a growth market especially as car free bike paths are on the increase. What market does these fit into? The vehicle seems to suffer the same issues as velomobiles where they are simply too expensive and too impractical, the latter heavily imposed by the lack of infrastructure not the product itself(these are very much improved in terms of visibility and steering), although I am not sure if the Dutch or the Danes would welcome such a vehicle on their sublime bike lanes. Thoughts, am I dead wrong or just unjustly sceptical? Would love to try one out though!

I think this may be the issue for the mass acceptance for this machine. There are certainly niches for it, like the Renault Twizzy which is now ubiquitous in South of France hourly rental fun machines.

It's only 850 mm wide, that's pretty similar to a bicycle with rider, especially if there's panniers. I ride a recumbent tricycle (in the US, though) that's 864 mm wide, and don't have many problems on bicycle infrastructure. Occasionally I have to dip a wheel off the edge of the trail to get around someone, but that's not that common.

The Dutch might accept vehicles like this, as there is a Dutch company working on developing a very similar product and as the Sinclair C5 is legal for use on Dutch bicycle paths.

It's basically an imitation of the American ELF 3-wheel. It provides a whole cab, a back seat, and a trunk for packages.

stuff like this has gotta be the future for urban and suburban travel. Ppl will always want that sense of independence so public transport isn't the only answer. Bikes are awesome but cold and tiring esp for journeys above 5 miles. There needs to be a lane for buses and vans etc then a lane for sheltered reclining e bikes! SHREBs !!!! u could squeeze a passenger seat into that design too!!!

Im confused about electric vehicle batteries. Doesn't it harm the environment when it is mined. And can it be recycled? Thanks
@hippopotamus865 жыл бұрын
Yes, there is a limited amount of lithium and it's running out. If every vehicle was converted to electric, we wouldn't have any lithium left.

I wonder if manufacturing the thing is green. Because lithium mining 4 the batteries is not green at all, and all of the framework and the mechanics might not be biodegradable or manufactured in a factory run by clean energy. Same problem with cars; all of the parts 2 an electric car might not be manufactured cleanly ( that is changing because of the Tesla Gigafactory, yay!), and when people charge the car in their house or at stations, the electricity produced might come from fossil fuels.

+Neel 2000 Lithium isn't really mined out of the ground like other metals such as iron, aluminium, etc. It's mostly extrated from underground pools & mineral springs then concentrated by solar evaporation from briny water in salt ponds over 18-24 months: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithium#Production
