I fished at the Buller hatchery 30 years ago. It was just 2 weeks after this section of the river was opened to the public. There were no special programs to make it a trophy trout water. I have never seen so many trout in one river. There were also 2 to 3 foot long Musky. I caught 80 trout that day and one was my personal biggest at the time, a 22" female Rainbow. I asked an employee at the hatchery why there were so many Trout and Musky in the river. He told me that whenever there is a flood at the hatchery, fish get washed into the river and it's only been open to fishing for 2 weeks.

I caught the biggest trout of my life here 25 years ago. I also caught the most trout in one day here, I believe it was 60, I was exhausted. The first time I went here was only a few weeks after the hatchery property was opened to fishing. Before that it was closed for 30 years. I had never seen so many trout in one place before. I have lived in Colorado for 23 years and still haven't caught a bigger trout. Sadly, this place has a real problem with people poaching these trout with bait, frankly it's a problem all over SW Virginia. To so many people in this area it is just unthinkable to release a trout alive.

Do these fish still eat dry flies or do they only want meat aka chow?

Thanks for sharing this video. My husband stops here almost weekly; he's seen a mama bear and cub here as well as a copperhead ( I think that's what he said). He caught his record rainbow trout here if I remember correctly.
