Laika in general is such an underrated movie studio! Oh, everyone talks about Disney and DreamWorks and Pixar, but if you mentioned the studio Laika to someone, they likely wouldn't know what it is, which is a real darn shame! I actually have a really cool short story for this movie. I live in Oregon, the studio is actually up around the Portland area. When it came out I was 14, but one of the head animators for it and had brought three of the models to our small town theatre several hours south of Portland. He brought Eggs and Fish, it was so cool to see and he had one saved for after everyone watched the movie to avoid spoilers. The one he saved for the end was Snatcher when he ate some cheese, not the mild version but the END result when he gets the taste of that rare cheese and just before he explodes….yeah we got to touch that model of Snatcher. It was so gross and yet cool to be able to touch and move the models. It was truly a core memory for me and I’ve fallen in love more with the studio even more since. Always loved claymation movies (although the ones they use are more of a soft foam type feel). Paranorman and Coraline have been a couple Halloween movies me and my mom watch ever year. I hope they make something spooky and creepy again. Keep up the amazing videos, I’ve been binging everything.

looking back on this movie, i'm wondering if it was a metaphor for the holocaust (and other genocides at the hand of a totalitarian society). it's so much more racially biased than i realized. the spread of propaganda and use of fear and straight up lies just really hit close to everything that happened. what a dark but amazing movie concept.
@bagofmoss47102 жыл бұрын
I was gonna say something along the lines of “dude it’s a childrens movie, chill out” but then I remembered that the trolls are literally imprisoned, forced to work on something that would inevitably kill them, feared by most of society, hunted down for literally just existing, and the whole thing of them being too scared to fight. This actually hits the nail right on the head. Also Lakia has produced some dark shit so I really can’t be mad over your theory even if I tried

Hearing a retelling of this story makes me appreciate the story, storyboarding, designs and development the movie had so much more. The script and story is so god damned well-put that even my dumbass child brain was able to comprehend the emotions so well and understand each reasons of why something happened. Normally I would've forgotten little plot details, but here? I was so invested in the story. I've got to admit though, I didn't like the designs at first as I was a simple-minded kid, so for the story to be so good that I looked past the designs is impressive in itself. I'm also not saying that the designs were bad, they have a purposeful stylized design that fits well for a darker theme, and what makes it even more impressive is that this is stop-motion, so my respect for the designs and movements heightens even more. The shots as well - It's so impressive that they've shot all of these with stop-motion. Each scene gives you great atmospheres and paints you a portrait of what it represents; The boxtrolls living in a dark cave with lightbulbs decorating their abode, giving you an idea that while these creatures are very grounded and discreet, they don't let that hinder their positive traits such as the creativity, which is greatly represented by having the light source as lightbulbs specifically. Then we have the human world, where the townsarea is realistically bright and buzzing whenever morning and very somber when at night, yet where the villain's place shows a picture of a very isolated and industrialized feel. Also love the lighting from the first scenes in the town where the villains first strut their invention around town telling people about the curfew, the light disrupts what's supposed to be a sombering night and interjects alertness from the flashy display of the light. And _god,_ whoever implemented madame Frufru is a genius.

I remember watching this movie a few years ago and honestly not really remembering much. I saw this video in my recommended videos and figured, why not rewatch the movie because it felt wrong to try and watch a review while not remembering the movie. I don't remember this movie being so *fun.* It was so much fun and lively and beautifully animated, and just so creative. The story has a lot of heart as well, making me tear up at certain points. It's very sweet and I think it's a shame that this movie is not as recognized as something like Caroline. I remember nobody really talking about this movie before or after this movie came out including myself, which is such a miss. This movie just needed time, and I had a wonderful time watching it. The box trolls are sweet, Eggs is a cutie, Winnie is a little psycho and funny as fuck, the henchmen are funny and very likeable despite being antagonists, and despite Snatcher being an absolutely horrible man, you know he'd win RuPaul's Drag Race. Kids fighting against irrational, fear mongered, adults is such a mature topic that people don't appreciate enough. Kids deserve to be young and live their lives while they can, not be the mature ones in a group of adults. Also, a small detail i noticed that was just so cute, was the movie started with Fish looking for, and asking the other box trolls if they've seen Eggs, and the ending shows Eggs looking for and asking the others if they've seen Fish, really nice callback to the beginning.

Holy crap I loved this movie when it came out. The asthetic is so specific and it captured my imagination so distinctly when I was a kid, very on par with Igor and 9

This was one of my favorite movies when I was little. I’ve literally never seen anyone talk about it, so I thought maybe it was a dream.

Oh boy this movie ruled my life during 7th and 8th grade. I went to my middle school Halloween dance dressed up as a Red Hat because I was so obsessed over Snatcher😆

My mom wasn’t a fan of this movie… I loved it. It was one of the first movies that I actually understood the moral of the story after first watch. But now if I ask her about it, she denies ever disliking it lol.

The movie is really good and all but honestly I feel like no one talks about the oddly terrifying trailers that came out for this movie.

I watched this as a child and I kept having dreams about it. Bad dreams, I only remember the characters but I think I have to re-watch it. The dreams I have only come about once a year but they felt like a fever dream. This movie was scary for some reason. Also is their currency basically cheese?

I love this movie so much. I haven’t seen it since like 2014 this made me want to give it a rewatch. Epic storytelling, great pacing, and dark but you can still explain the concepts to children without traumatizing them. Highly underrated

I watched that movie when I was about 9. My dad brought the disc home because it was based on a book that he always read to me and my brother. I really loved it but didn’t quite get the theme because I was too young. I should really rewatch it sometime soon

Lmao same I enjoyed this movie as a kid until the end and then I just hated it. Like they literally killed off the villain and then the little girl was like “There was blood and guts everywhere!” And I was like…oh nice….I hate this lmaoooo I haven’t watched it since. Glad I wasn’t the only one who felt that way lol

I watched this movie in the theaters with my dad when i was but a wee lad, and it's stuck with me ever since. It's not constantly on my mind or anything, but when i see it mentioned it brings me back to a simpler time in my life. Also i found the movie very charming, thinking about re-watching it sometime.

Oh my god, I haven’t seen Boxtrolls in so long! My siblings and I loved this movie so much that we made our own Boxtroll costumes out of duct tape and cardboard boxes 😂 Nice to see it getting the attention it deserves!

This movie is very underrated. I didn’t think I’d like it as a kid but when I saw it a few years later I was very surprised with how good it was. Indeed a bit depressing but so good. Idk why they’d ban your video on it soo annoying 😮💨😮💨

I watched this movie as a kid, forgot about it, then just recently got a nightmare of Snatcher blowing up out of nowhere and since I have forgotten about the movie, thought it was some weird shit that popped into my brain. So thanks for reminding me where my Nightmare came from.

I really love how this film portrays the Boxtrolls themselves. They’re an introverted, yet quirky, observant, inventive, curious, and gentle community. But I so wish more of Egg’s father was involved in the story. His relationship with the Boxtrolls is very wholesome: both are kind hearted inventors. It’s even more endearing when you consider how he likes keeping to himself, but loves to think “out-of-the-box”. 😊

The book this movie is based on, Here Be Monsters, is literally one of my favorite books ever and I would seriously reccomend it. Summary: It's about a kid who has lived underground his whole life, there's living wheels of cheese, there's a secret cult, evil badgers, boxtrolls of course, a talking rat, cabbage people, rabbit ladies, it's phenomenal.

I really enjoy The Boxtrolls, but I definitely see it as an example of a movie where the villain really elevates it. Archibald Snatcher is such an interesting character, as you completely understand his motivation, especially with how twisted the system of Cheesebridge is. But of course, he takes things way too far. It's also facinating how obsessed he is of cheese even though he has a severe allergy, and how it ends up being his downfall. The movie's good as it is, but I definitely find Snatcher to be the best written character.
