Indeed. When making a movie about radical sports, especially for kids, it's easy to just treat it as a dumb fake sport you can exploit because children think it's cool. The Surf's Up crew treated surfing with the respect it deserved and the end result was amazing.

I got curious as to how actual surfers felt about the movie. From what I can tell, I think it's safe to say that it's extraordinarily highly regarded. Like most extreme sports, most movies with surfing as the focus just treat it like clay and make whatever they want out of it, not respecting the sport whatsoever. Surfs Up gives insight to how people feel surfing and what makes them go out sunrise to sunset to do it. They accurately portray the sport in every conceivable way and give nods to past surf movies as well. It's the Kung Fu Panada of extreme sports movies. Nothing but respect from everyone involved.

A moment I adore of Chicken Joe is when he finds out he's in the finals, he isn't excited he made it that far He was happy that meant he got to surf some more. The dude is the ultimate example of "I'm here to have fun." Hell, he didn't even care he won, he was just happy to have had some fun. The ultimate good vibes
@defaulted94856 ай бұрын
And I'm still in shock about how well that aged. I've been in a lot of competition, trying to prove myself since Cody Maverick was one of my favourite cartoon character. That made me realized Chicken Joe, like other winners, don't think of winning. Other losers think of giving enough effort to win, but the guy who put the most effort and amazing works out there, are just having fun. Granted their definition of fun might be hella twisted and make them look like a stoner, but in order for them to have fun - they put so much effort doing it. If you're in a competition, don't think of "beating other opponents". The winners thinks that, "if I don't enjoy this, I have nothing else to live for" like Chicken Joe or Big Zeke Topanga. This is why winners are also the one bounces back the most. If they lost, the felt nothing of it. It was a good time, and they have nothing to lament or regret for. It was conveyed in two small sentences too, amazing cinematography. It's just "Dude, we got to surf some more!?" and "I won???"

I don't know how big it is there in the US or rest of the world, but here in Brazil this film was big, like I still have friends that use profile pictures and names from characters of the movie (like juão frango [chicken joe]) while one of the first things I talked with my now girlfriend was about some of the best dialogs on this movie (that was like, 4y ago and not 2000), most likely because of how UNGODLY GOOD the portuguese dub is, I never watched it in english to know, but in portuguese it has such a wonderful charm and it is so but so funny, I love this movie to the bone, the story is superb and at the very least the PT dub is so good that it makes it one of the OG classics for me.

I absolutely love surfs up, even tho the sequel was just.. no(practically non-existent to me). This movie is one of my all-time favorite childhood movies. One of the reasons is it is just hilarious and well animated. Also, my favorite character when i was a kid was chicken joe, but in more recent years, it has changed to Z

Bro this was such a great vid. I’ve been struggling with finding my reason for playing volleyball too. I’ve been so obsessed with trying to prove that I can compete and that I can play at higher levels and trying to win. I lost sight of how much I loved the game in the first place. “You’re always at your best when you’re having fun.” Well said man.

This movie is literally my childhood! I used to watch it on my PlayStation 2 so much that my playstation used to glitch out and open the movie menu with no sound, just a silent menu while the characters stared in your soul. The extras menu also used to have a bad surf board mini game where the middle surf board would be the only one Cody could use, and if you picked any color but yellow fall off and it didn't have dialogue it just the same ten minute loop of a stereotypical surf guitar riff. I am so happy this movie is getting the absolute love it deserves. It was so good, the animation and the mockumentary feel is a form of comedy I really love even now as an adult it's one of my favorite genre of movies and it HAS SUCH A GREAT STORY TO IT it's not just a hero learning a lesson! It was such a good message and really impacted but it was so ahead of its time it didn't get the love it deserved. Also GREEN DAY DID THE SOUND TRACK how could you NOT LOVE IT?

I like how this vid popped up after I ended up purchasing to watch surfs up last week after almost 2 decades because I use to watch it or have it on as background noise after school pretty much every other day while playing my DS. Such good times indeed.

The same way that time is relative, so is quality. You said it best: “you are at your best when you are having fun”

Nice!✨️ I watched it when I was 7 and it was really fun. I also thought the documentary style added to its charm. And the soundtrack, especially this song 'Like the ocean beats the moon to take the tides away, all we need is a little time to chase the blues away...'(not sure of the lyrics)✨️ The surf song, it was so calming and refreshing.

im glad pig decided to watch surfs up, i remember in his tier list video he said he had'nt seen it and i was so surprised by that. I knew it'd be the type of movie he'd like so im happy to see he made a vid on it. i didn't know they used that sorta camera technology in the movie, it rlly was ahead of its time.
