There are many great workbooks that explain how health and behavior therapy and pain psychology services help people manage chronic pain. These books are best if used with a licensed mental health provider who has a specialty in chronic pain. A few of my favorite workbooks include:
- Zoffness, R. (2020). The Pain Management Workbook: Powerful CBT and Mindfulness Skills to Take Control of Pain and Reclaim Your Life
- Schubiner, Betzold (2016). Unlearn your pain: A 28-day process to reprogram your brain
- Otis, J. (2007). Managing chronic pain: A cognitive-behavioral therapy approach. Oxford university press.

If you're suffering from chronic pain, talk to your primary care provider so you can begin finding the right treatment plan!

Are there any publications showing statistically significant treatments for pain outside of our typical opioids, NSAIDs, acetaminophen, and lesser-known turmeric? I am interested in treatments both with and without medication. Thanks!

@@dustinzimmerman6246 great question! Plenty of studies showing the benefit of non pharmacological treatments for chronic pain. Here's a free article for a study in JAMA showing benefit of a psychological intervention for low back pain: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8482298/#__ffn_sectitle

So in order to truly overcome chronic pain (i.e., human suffering, more broadly speaking), you’d have to change the world. Although a tall order that seems impossible… It may also be incredibly healing for people who are constantly given so many individual tools (which are also important, because even minor amounts of coping-related relief can instill a sense of free-will that can also make you feel good (which, importantly, is not the same thing as decreasing pain)) but still can’t get real and full relief :-)
