My kids are all grown, now, and I got my report cards. They literally don't care if you play basketball at age three. They want you on the floor with them playing Lego. They want hoisted up onto your shoulders to see over a crowd. They want ice cream cones that get drippy and sticky and instead of yelling or worrying about the car, you run them thru the sprinkler to rinse off. They want bedtimes and stories and days in the pool. Skip basketball this time, and tickle him til he can't breathe. The shit I thought was so important ended not being so important. And their best memories are the ones where we just hung out and I let them feel joy.

It's true. Love this comment. I had three boys rapid fire when I was 20-23, then I had a fourth 4 years ago when I was 35. The way he's being raised compared to his brothers, oh my goodness. It's a gift to be able to look back, to know what matters and to be able to pick your battles. (Unfortunately for the first one or two you don't get to that place without learning from some mistakes along the way!😅)

My dad left and I could intellectualize why up until I met my half brothers and sisters which were his next family and then I saw their pain through their eyes that I had already come to terms with for my own experience and then it took another 20 years for me to reconcile that

Hasan, you are not petty, thinking this way is how we all think and why it is hilarious in comedy. We are all creepy, sadistic, voyeurs in a way and @Steve Trevino does a whole bit about the watching other couples fight and calling his wife into it at the supermarket. @Adam Ray mentions it too. He talks about watching drunk couples fight in Vegas and his buddy leaves to pee and he goes, "Save my seat," and he goes, "Bro, I'm about to change our flight! We have to see how this ends!"

Correction: Compulsive liar syndrome, oppression porn merchant. Sure, we expect that jokes may exaggerate. But his lies weren't attached to jokes; he fabricated them in the anecdotes intended to display his valiant truth-telling and suffering in the face of relentless racism and bodily threats. (And the years-long abuse and doxing of the high school girl he repeatedly lied about? Shrug. Collateral white girl damage.) This was a pretty good take by Kat Rosenfield in Unherd: >>. it is not hard to see why someone like Minhaj might fall into the trap of not just monetizing his trauma, but fabricating it. It is what Jay Caspian Kang called “oppression fantasy”, writing that Minhaj's fakery represents “another example of how oppression stories - in this case fabricated oppression porn - gets leveraged by upwardly mobile immigrants to mostly advance their careers”.

Why? Meaning. Jokes are about YOU. A SHOW is a story which goes beyond YOU and GIVES SOMETHING OF MEANING AWAY with humor but not just FOR HUMOR'S SAKE. It speaks of a person who is devoted to the CRAFT and saying something... and not all about having their egos stroked and not really saying anything that endures. I don't remember jokes. I remember stories that evoke emotion and provoke thought. Period. I say not your job to tie it up, but caring about something other than getting the laugh DOES make a difference.
