There's absolutely no point in talking about ethics in govt until you repeal Citizens United and get Campaign Finance Reform done, and that's not happening until we reform the Supreme Court and that's not happening until we get the Presidency, Senate and House, and that's not happening until we fix gerrymandering, voting access, make election day a holiday, and make absentee/early/mail voting available to all. To *start* with.

As an Illinois resident I have to say that J.B. Pritzker is the best governor our state has had in a very, very long time. When he first hit the scene, I too had my reservations. But he was a bastion of reason during the pandemic, and his contributions to our state have been numerous. Thanks to some of the programs his administration launched, I can actually call myself a homeowner--something I never thought I'd be able to say. Should billionaires exist? No, I still believe they shouldn't. But, hey--at least his wealth was inherited? I dunno, man. He's not perfect, but I'm proud to have him as our governor. P.S: I love you Hasan and I still miss Patriot Act.

FYI in the Citizens United versus FEC Thomas was the deciding factor. Had he recused himself the decision would have been 4/4 and not the law of the land. In 2010 when that case came before the courts Thomas had been taking money from Harlan Crow for over 6 years. Harlan Crow was the president of the Trammel Crow foundation that was one of the largest donors to Citizens United. There is a direct line of money and corruption from Harlan Corw to Citizens United and Clarence Thomas simultaneously.

tldr: As a resident of Southern Illinois I want to say that Governor Pritzker is great but he needs to try to connect with the residents of rural southern illinois more. First off I want to say thank you to Hasan for having our governor on, I was so happy to see him interviewed. I personally voted for JB Pritzker, and would happily do so again. The only thing I wish he would do more of is try to win over the people in the southern part of the state. I live in southern Illinois, I am much closer to Kentucky than I am to Chicago, and the majority of people here don't feel seen or heard by our state government. Many people from the southern part of the state believe we should split the state into northern and southern Illinois because they truly believe the state government only cares about and listens to people in Chicago. I personally don't believe that, but it is very rare for the governor or anyone in high state office to travel to southern Illinois to speak or visit. It is very isolating to be a Democrat down here and it is exhausting trying to convince people who only watch fox news that our governor is actually doing great things for our state. So anyway, I guess my point was I wish he would spend more energy and time trying to connect with the people in the southern half of the state but I still really like him and am glad he's our governor.

Zerbaxa is right, this is what's so funny/sad about rural areas like southern Illinois. Taxes on the north are what pay for the roads to rural towns. I've been on southern Illinois roads and they're already a nightmare but without Chicago tax dollars they would be non existent.

They still deserve a voice though. What Amanda is asking for isn't much it's just the bare minimum to be honest. They deserve some attention and love too. Imagine a school group project that you have no say in and only the popular people get to contribute and have a say in the direction it goes, even if you get a good grade it still feels like a hollow experience because you didn't really get to participate or feel like you had an equitable share of a say worthy of your voice.

@@snow86241 I live in central Illinois and I've seen politics from every corner of this state. The people who live in rural areas have been out reached to constantly but always refuse any help. They live far up their own asses and I have to say are often some of the most racist, sexist and bigoted people you have ever met. Even more so than many places in the so-called bible belt. There is a map of sundown towns in America and an absurd number of them are in central and southern Illinois. Trust me when I say that most of rural Illinois are their own worst political enemies in every sense of the word. As JB said, they voted against a tax bill that would have lowered their taxes. They did so because the most wealthy Republican in the state told them to. They were literally offered tax relief on a silver platter and they refused to indulge. Essentially, without Chicago, Champaign and a few other cities Illinois would be redder than Indiana and poorer than Missouri.

Its a fair complaint. Our state is very diverse in a ton of ways, especially region. I hope that he tries to reach out of all of Illinois, but the sad fact is that more than 60% of the population of the state live within 2 hours of Chicago. Rauner, a Republican, is from Chicago. Really the only executive in state government not from Chicagoland is the Treasurer (and hes from Champaign).

You're going to need a lot more enforcement, though. Some billionaires will likely want to keep all the money they make, so they'll ship it off to other countries that NEED billionaires investing in them or else it collapses. The IRS needs more funding and a further bolstering of its forces so that they can bust tax dodgers. THEN it can be useful.

Thanks to JB, our state’s credit rating has gone up 9 times! We’ve legalized weed, passed balanced budgets, expanded reproductive rights to the point where we’re now an abortion haven, and we’re only the 3rd state to pass mandatory paid leave for all workers. I was hesitant to vote for him the first time, but he’s been amazing, especially after our previous garbage Republican governor left the state a mess!

Is the coalition of voters that would elevate someone like Pritzker (who hand checks) a coalition that could create a Congress politically able to eliminate the hand check? That would require a great deal of new comfort and trust in the perceived enemy of billionaires. We can either trust people willing to hand check that they will eliminate the rule when they win. Or we can wait for someone so good that they win without hand checking who will eliminate the rule.

15:11 It bothers me that he keeps saying “well other billionaires ran and lost so I didn’t just win because of money”. Like babe the problem is that you need hundreds of millions of dollars now to even join the race. No poor or even middle class person could have had the slightest hope of winning that race with only their own financing, but anyone with hundreds of millions at their disposal at least has a chance.

Saying Billionaires should not exist is a critique on our system. We used to tax capital to coerce the mega wealthy to invest in their companies and workers instead. The biggest problem with capitalism is it's tendency for market and regulatory capture. In other words capitalists love to play the refs. While I agree that commerce is good and some capital markets make a lot of money, I think that a social democracy does the best to both benefit from and properly limit the broader power of capital.

So far I like this guy but I do think he’s coming off a bit defensive - Hasan is giving him a chance to respond to common or expected criticisms in a relatively low pressure situation, since the questions are real and substantive, but the tone is exaggerated and comedic. It’s a perfect environment for a politician to get to play the “straight man” and come off as reasonable and intelligent by just simply and casually stating their points. I’m getting the impression that Pritzker doesn’t “get” this type of interview - he’s responding to Hasan the way he’d respond to someone actually arguing with him. Probably because he’s used to that kind of environment, but here it’s just not a great strategic move. Other politicians have “gotten it” better in Hasan’s other interviews, or you could even look at Pete Butteigeig’s conversation with Hank Green, which was a slightly higher pressure situation since it was less comedic, but he still came off extremely intelligent and competent just by being calm and casual, even when he was rebutting Hank’s points or criticisms by others.

I'd really like to hear a debate about our state's pension reform. It's honestly BS for our government to over-compensate their employee pensions which is practically a pyramid scheme. There's no reason they are getting a fixed rate 8% or whatever when literally everyone else is being held accountable for 401k investments. Now the state is hugely in debt because of ridiculous expectations in the funds returns.

JB seems like a genuine guy. Seems to be pretty down to Earth for someone who hasn't needed to work a day in his life. What a rare unicorn streaking across the political sky. Let's get him in the White House for 8 years after Kamala. If Dems had a primary this year he would have RAN AWAY with the election this year. Truly hope he stays his unique self until he has a turn to run for president.

15:20 Well hold on there, one of the candidates in that 2018 primary was Daniel Biss, who's also progressive, the middle-class candidate, and - unlike Pritzker - already had a decade of experience in state government. He was also a mathematician before he got into politics, which is very cool (we could use more scientists in government). Pritzker spent $70 million on the primary alone. How was Biss supposed to compete with that?
