The 15 bonus years bit broke me 😢 I have been at that point that lady has. I was saved by Jimmy’s friend, Sean Lock, in much the same way. You saved a life too Jimmy. That will stay with you always. RIP Sean 😢

Fuck yeah for bonus years. I'm halfway through my 13th bonus year. I just call these years "gravy" because I was fine with that being it, but it's immeasurably better once I realised I there was gravy. (rip Sean as well. One of the greatest).

I had something similar to what happened to the "Bonus years" commenter happen to me. I was up late one night and had been having a great day, wonderful family, not a problem to be found in my life. So, I hopped on KZbin before bed and found Jimmy's stuff. I must have watched ten videos and a few of his specials, I just couldn't stop. After those few hours of watching this guy and not being able to figure out why the hell he was popular, I had lost all will to live. Luckily he's so boring I fell asleep and felt better the next day but for a few minutes there I was really close to not making it through.

I'm halfway through my second bonus year. I'm manic depressive & spiraled after losing my job & hung a noose in my bedroom. I had stopped listening to comedy for years before then and wanted to watch an old video before I went. I'm so glad I got back into it 💛 gdi I'm crying now lol I love you all

To be able to break down horribel things into comedy does require high intelligence. We should show respect to all the great comedians.

Carr always kills, very smart comedy that you don't always see the punchline coming. When he told the story about pushing the envelope at a cancer benefit and subsequently giving the audience members some relief, he hit the nail right on the head. There used to be the full clip (since vanished) on youtube of Gilbert Gottfried's full act at a St. Jude's Hospital benefit with a lot of the audience being parents of kids that had been hospitalized. Instead of pandering he took his usual darkest material even further over the line and had these previously anxious and depressed people there bent over laughing and out of their previous nearly shell shocked state. Some comedians get what comedy can do for people, Carr is one of them and so was Gilbert.
@JayyEVee

Well said indeed, Gilbert also had that touch.

Gilbert is a "comedian's comedian." As in, most people think "wasn't he that annoying guy from Princess Bride?" (if they know his name at all). But after watching _The Aristocrats_ (highly, highly recommended!) and how Gottfried just slayed... every single "foul-mouthed comedian" in a room full of pro's... yeah. He was a legend even back then.

Comedians like Jimmy are truly intelligent. Becuase it's not just irony of the bad they show. They show you an entire now aspect of life. If we can't joke about that what is horribel, we cannot live with it.

I have watched several of these comedic podcasts led by people whose primary tool of craft is language and I am staggered at how many of them just can't string a sentence together with clarity when they are not delivering jokes. Such a relief to listen to someone articulate who expresses their thoughts with clarity and purpose. No constant 'like, like', no starting a sentence then changing tack then changing again till finally the thought is delivered, no scratching around for the right word. Thank you Jimmy Carr. You give me hope that the lost art of articulating thought through spoken language is not lost . His smart, concise expression of clearly thought through ideas using delivery that treats us like intelligent listeners is a joy. Such a welcome change to not have to wade through poor communication to extract some kind of meaning.

What comedic podcasts are you listening to where the host/s can't string a sentence together lmfao? Most if not all of em that have huge followings are great. Curious to kno which "comedic podcasts" fall intellectually short even though they're first & foremost a comedy podcast. We Might Be Drunk, This Past Weekend, Are You Garbage, Bad Friends, Whiskey Ginger, Fly on the Wall, Hey Babe, JRE, Honeydew, Your Mom's House, Harland Highway, Blocks ... those are all the ones I can think of right away that are all pretty damn good despite that statement being subjective lol

I love the discussion about joking with your friends, specifically the buddies you genuinely care about and yet constantly give shit to. My philosophy on it is that I roast the ones I love most, because if I trust them enough to consider them that close, they've already proven to me that they are self-aware and have a good enough sense of humor to laugh at themselves, and enough faith in my intent that I'm not going to need to worry whether they got it or took it to heart. And because I'm usually a bit of an empath naturally, if I don't believe they can take it, I feel the need to protect their feelings.

Thank you so much for having Jimmy on! I first saw him on Countdown, and it took a few shows to appreciate his craftsmanship. There’s something really clever and powerful about the way he handles routine misogyny. It’s great to see the kindness and self-reflection that drive his wit. And, yes, I’ll buy his book, not Tolle’s.

OMG!! This podcast was fabulous. I have seen Jimmy Carr for YEARS on Graham Norton, Chatty Man, Jonathan Ross, and honestly, I never really gave him much thought other than the notion that he had THE most obnoxious laugh ( no disrespect intended because I also assumed it was part of his act and I always appreciate excellence even when it is in comedic obnoxiousness). That being said, this podcast has allowed me to see behind the persona into the most excellent, thoughtful, intelligent and insightful person he truly is. I WILL purchase his book (AND read it ) because he has made me eager to learn more about him. I really hope he pursues more storytelling in his standup, and it WOULD be lovely to hear him do it AS himself and not one of his personas, because he IS enough.

Just before I watched this, I saw a clip of Mr. Rogers telling Charlie Rose 30 years ago that the greatest gift people can give you at times is silence, so that you have time and space to wonder. Then Jimmy made that comment about how we need time for our own thoughts. So, I think I’m going to take their advice tomorrow on my daily walk, and listen to the sounds of my own thoughts. If you don’t hear from me again…it was their fault. 🤣

Having many visits to the hospital I've been in great pain and joking around with the hospital staff usually goes well. On a return visit at the ER I was joking about my pain and the doctor was ready to get me out of the hospital. I didn't want to go and the Doctor didn't feel my black humor proved how much pain I was in. After three weeks in pain that serious narcotics couldn't touch my humor got me through. Jimmy Carr and some of his worst filthy jokes made me laugh during the situation I was trying to survive. Being a colon cancer survivor 40 years ago I need to find his cancer jokes now that I'm mature enough to appreciate them. Jimmy is the best reality check I know

20:14 "The gift of anxiety is jokes." Haha. This reminds me of Pandora's Box. All the ills were released into the world, and all that was left in the box was hope. I like to interpret that in its ironic sense, where hope is there to torture us, since the box has given us nothing to be hopeful about. But in the same way, the box gives us horrible anxiety and throws us a bone with "jokes".
