While prototyping, create an apparatus to suspend your aircraft, maybe with elastic bands, specifically to determine the thrust angle based on center of balance. I speculated the cost of rebuilding can be avoided.

That bird of play is awesome!! I think moving your fan unit aft will help your CG and will make the fan unit a little more efficient. You will have less friction drag coming out of the duct. I am looking forward to the next flight. Cheers.

With stock cars we have scales to weigh each tire position, perhaps a small digital scale on each corner to help identify balance point

Just an FYI, but back in the day we used to use fishing weights with a file to adjust them. Of course they were made of lead but we didn't know the dangers so perhaps clay or plasticine?
@alphagt62Ай бұрын
I used to toy with model railroading, and I bought both thin lead sheets and lead shot to control the weight of train cars. The sheets would have been perfect for this instance. Lead isn’t all that dangerous, so long as you don’t make it into dust that can be inhaled.

As always, I love the design and your ability to scale down machines that multi-billion dollar companies sometimes barely get off the ground. The AA battery as a counterbalancing weight is awesome. It fits right in as a bomb or rocket pod.🤣

If you mount 2 batteries under each wing, they would look like bombs. Plus, adding a lexan canopy might help the cg as well.

I would try to find the CG by taking one index finger and place it on the center of the fuselage underneath where u think it would be and try to shift the battery forward and back a bit at a time till u feel like u can balance it on your finger without it moving forward or backwards but do it indoors because the wind might push the nose or tail down or up making u think it’s nose or tail heavy that’s my opinion

Thanks! Looks fun. To help, maybe try computing the CG mathematically before building- total weight (Including batteries etc.) so the CG is plotted? Just a suggestion. Nice build. I wish I had the skill and wherewithal to do that. Good work, Dad.

The video and pictures of the real one in Flight showed that it actually had a small ventral fin near the tail. I’m not super if that helped with its aerodynamics or flight characteristics, but I was trying to find out if there real one ever flew without that fin.

Rather than adjusting the wing geometry just make the wingtips/winglets smaller to avoid fouling on landing, I would cheat a little bit and add strakes near the nose, neutral incidence just about 25mm span on each - even with a bit of anhedral - I think that will make a lot of difference

Thats a really cool model RC looks very close to the real thing. I was lucky to see the bird of pray fly twice because i lived next to an airbase it was flown from. the most striking thing about it was just how small it seemed which at the time was very unique, unlike now where we all have drones.

It didn't have fly by wire, it instead had manual hydraulic controls. The wings on your model are angled in a way that the downward angled portion isn't providing proper lateral stability like the real one does (the real one is very stable), the inner section needs to he a bit longer and the outer downward section angled a bit mote vertically
@toolbaggersАй бұрын
The Avro Arrow (1958) was the first fly-by-wire production plane. It could also be flown RC by ground control!!

I'm curious, but I've heard something recently about highly efficient as well as supersonic aircraft have a particular trait. Basically that if you took regularly spaced cross-section profiles as seen from the frontal view - that the percentage change in surface area is very consistent between those slices. (There may be some parts that don't change much, but the increase and decrease would be something like a bell curve or parabola?) Some aircraft may be notable for the "coke bottle" waist in the fuselage where the wings increase in area, due to this particular metric. I'm wondering how that works out in some of the replica models you've been making, or if you could specifically do your own take on that idea with something original? -- Edit -- Anyone see a control surface check done prior to sending it? A bit too late this time around though.

You have built a Bird of Prey RC. I have simulator flown Bird of Prey and modified it and flown with and without karnard wing in X-PLANE. This airframe was a nightmare to fly, ask Boeing who built the Bird of Prey what they say. Iran improvises something similar to Bird of Prey, they ache as it has gone to hell downright slow. But it's brave that you tested and flew the Bird of Prey, well done. But you must have a very expensive and good 3D printer with a very good CAD/CAM program and aerodynamics program as well. Good luck with the other exriments as well. Have a great time.

Your CG was in the wrong position, but find the CG position for that model won't be ideal. You need canards, but to a good flying model, you need to move the main wing forward with canards, and found the CG is a quarter of the whole area of the lifting body wings.
