An Air France service between Osaka and Paris was forced to turn back after a bird strike damaged its nose cone on May 28th. Flight AF291 declared an emergency and returned to Osaka Kansai Airport less than three hours into its 12-hour journey after the flight deck crew noticed a technical malfunction with the Airbus A350-900's weather radar and speedometer.

As an aircraft structures Sheetmetal Mech, I have done major repairs for bird strikes. One a SW 737 the obviously large bird went through the radome nose and done severe damage to the structural pressurized thick bulkhead aft of it. That aircraft was out of service for weeks. Was a very challenging area to work due to access to replace and repair the bulkhead section and stiffeners etc

Many years ago whilst departing POA to MVD a bird strike occurred during take-off, before V1. The aircraft immediately aborted take-off ( quite different braking, as a matter of fact), and returned safely to the gate. No one was injured, but made several pax very nervous (not me, I found it quite thrilling, as a matter of fact).

It doesn't looks a serious damage on the nose, but the damage can affect the Flow of air over it's airframe during flight.

They had problems with radar and Pitot tubes, which is serious. If there was only structural damage, I think the pilots would have continued the flight without even realizing the situation. The fuel consumption of the airplane would increase too.

While yes, the bird cause the damage, the nose most likely did not get this damaged by only the bird. It’s most likely a combination of bird strike initially weakening or destroying the structure along with the nose caving in because of pressure

I was one of the passengers on this flight and the way Air France handled this was awful. After landing back in Osaka we were stuck on the plane for over two hours before being sent to a random hotel over an hour away from the airport with no form of transportation to get back to the airport when we needed it. I’ll never travel with them again after this. Also yeah we didn’t feel anything or hear anything but we were just told we had to fly back to Osaka with no further information until a friend sent us an article about the bird at take off.
@sophiaspalding3252
@sophiaspalding3252 Жыл бұрын
The reason we were stuck on the plane was so long was because the authorities were checking the procedures. We were also delayed leaving as well which I’m not sure why as they never told us.

This is not a bird strike, this is nothing like it. Given the extensive damage to the nose cone and consequent fault operation of critical instruments, it is certain that it occurred at the altitude reported by the crew: 35 thousand feet MSL. The fact that the operating airplane was stopped at the runway for inspection, away from the terminal, suggest that they known it was no bird strike.
@aquaden8344
@aquaden8344 Жыл бұрын
Have you been there at 35 thousand feet and watched it happen? It could be as well a bird hitting the left side of the radome and the debris getting tangled up in the flight sensors? The damaged radome then collapsed completely due to the high speed at 35k feet. It's too early for premature conclusions (take a second look at the shape of the radome, left side pushed in, right side pushed out).

No bird flies too high above ground, the birds that fly this high only do it over mountain ranges, not over common ground, not this high. There are no birds this high in that location. Also, there's no blood in the radome, no signs of any marks left by bones or feathers, as is common with bird strikes. No bird strike do this kind of damage to the radome of a large aircraft, do not expect anyone to tell the public what really happened there.
@forgotten_world

@@ant2312 The video says that the cabin crew noticed the issue at 35 thousand feet, what the video don't tell you is that it's impossible to fly a plane this type and do not notice the alarms ringing since it is without AWR and altimeter.
