Norton fits into this role perfectly because that is what he does in real life sets... he starts to "direct" scenes. As a matter of fact he did this in Am.History X to the point of getting into arguments with the director.

Mike basically knows he can do better and has more integrity as an artist. He knows Riggan is aware of his status as an artist, and Mike uses this to his advantage. He uses this confidence and charisma to basically lead Riggan in any direction he wants. "No, no Riggan. You don't get it. THIS is how you're supposed to do it..." Regan just looks at him in awe...
