Agreed. Especially since everyone is like “budgies are starter birds” No. I personally own two quaker parrots and an indian ringneck, and I’ve worked with cockatiels and a few budgies. The budgies were by far the most difficult. Of course their bites don’t hurt as much as my medium sized birds, but the training is so much more difficult when they’re so skittish because they’re so little.

For example, if someone wanted a macaw as their first bird, that’s great, AS LONG as they’ve done loads of enrichment, physically interacted and been around them, experienced them in one way or another! You don’t get budgies because you want to upgrade! Plus budgies are awesome 😎

A couple years ago I was asking a breeder for some information over love birds. She said to me to tame the young bird and get rid off "bad behaviours" you ve to put the bird in a so called dark punishment cage if the bird isn't doing what you want. Not for long because otherwise the bird will start to hate you, she told me. In the beginning I believed this story. I am so glad I didn't buy a bird at that time yet. Since I am following your channel I know a lot more although I don't ve a bird yet. Still considering having a bird. But I want to learn and be prepared as much as possible. My worst bird advice was actually from the breeder of my parrotlet. I couldn’t get him to come out and start bonding with me so she told me to just reach in and grab him. 3 years later he still hates my hands.

I love how every comment is about how the pet store didn't educate them about their bird. You mean someone trained to run the cash register wasn't able to offer you up to date health, diet, and training advice? Not to mention a complete run down of the temperament of not only the bird you are purchasing, but any other potential bird that might be more suitable. Shocking! Simply shocking!

I sadly bought my bird from a pet store, and I mean all their advice was bad. But the worst part (not so much advice) was theu wouldn't give me a health guarantee because I didn't buy on of their bird kits. It was a tiny tiny cage with the perches, a bag of seeds and one sad plastic toy. I went and explained how I had my flight cage with natural purches, all these shredded toys all ready! (I've done tons and tons of research before hand) and they denied it because I didn't buy it from them. Luckily my bird is healthy and we see an avian yet every year to make sure! But I just thought that was super awful 😕

I bought my bird from Petco, but before I purchased him, they advised me to watch bird tricks channel and get as much information as I could to be sure that this particular bird would be what I wanted. This was over a year ago and I purchased cages and toys and whatever I felt my bird would need BEFORE I purchased. My bird is healthy, happy and loves to listen to music 😁

I own a pet store in Ontario, Canada. I refer EVERYONE that purchases a bird from me to follow your channel. I have been watching for many years and have learned sooooo much. I currently have 6 birds 🐦 🥰. Budgies, a conure, a caique, an African grey, and a hahns Macaw. My birds have a wonderful life thanks to the information you share. Oh man..I went through hell trying to find a vet to treat my sick Speckled Sussex hen..a “special” vet clinic charged over seven hundred bucks to basically experiment on and torture her. They wanted me to stuff a tube down her, inject a bunch of stuff when they didn’t even have a diagnosis. Ppl see chickens as disposable dinner items. I took care of this poor creature inside, she appreciated being away from the flock, actually, and she knew she was loved and cherished up until the moment she passed. At the necropsy, she was literally riddled with cancer, I spoke with an avian virologist, there are awful viruses other than Marek’s which we have a vaccine for that cause cancers. I had another hen that showed no symptoms at all, but was sitting under the coop one night at bedtime, I convinced her to come out, she knew she was dying, and self isolated under the coop. She passed only a few hours later, no symptoms, healthy weight, no feelable issues. I didn’t have a necropsy done for her, although I should have. It’s so upsetting when they pass..and you get plenty of advice on “knowledgeable forums” like Backyard Chickens about how “humane” it is to wring their necks..it’s disgusting..

First one. All the "experts" here in Northern Europe say, let the bird be at peace in its cage for the first week or two. What the heck. I’ve had six parrots since the early ’90s, and I’ve never believed in that “advice”. I have opened the cage door always on the first day, usually after night and let them to come out, if they have wanted to. Of these six parrots, all the young birds, four, have come on my hand on the first day without any problems. The two rescued ones took longer before that. I have only one bird now, young Congo African Gray and we are having a great time together! You are the first person who I hear to say this like I have been thinking and this is BirdTricks 💝

I can't stand the advice where it's told to leave the bird in its cage for several days or weeks to get used to its cage 😟 The worst advice that I heard is a breeder of Lineolated Parakeets told a potential buyer that in order to make their poop small and firmer is to never feed fresh foods as they don't need it. Lineolated Parakeets have bigger and wetter poops compared to similar sized birds and its a draw back to owning one of these birds. The breeder didn't care about the health and welfare of his birds. He wanted to sell and make money and gave wrong advice.

I’m really glad I stumbled onto this video today. My sister told me not to let my bird land on my head because of dominance. I’d rather her be on my head because her claws scratch.. I had a breeder suggest I get a Lorikeet. When I told her I didn't want one due to the mess, need for fresh fruit, etc. She said those needs could be fulfilled by her pellets and it keeps their poop whole to decrease the mess. When I told her I used a seasonal feeding system she said the pellets were enough and no fresh diet was needed. She also suggest I clip wings....needless to say I don't have a Lorikeet and I'm in search of a different breeder. So grateful for bird tricks

I got laughed at last year when I brought a new sleeper cage for my Eclectus, they were very confused why I had a sleeper cage in the first place. I explained how cage covers can be dangerous and that it was better for my bird to have a smaller cage in a dark room in a quiet area so he can get 10-12 hrs sleep at night, and that his main cage is very large and portable (aviary) so it can go outside or be in a busy area of the house, so it's not idea for a good nights sleep. They truly thought I was strange and had never heard of such a concept.

I've been watching you and a few other KZbinrs for around two years. I adore animals and have a fair few, but still think having a bird is not for me, much as I think I'd love to have one. I'm one of those people who believes in extensive research before buying a puppy, kitten, chickens, hamster bearded Dragon, you name it, I'll have at least three books on the subject. Fortunately the first bird “store” I ever went to was run by an excellent breeder that required perspective bird parents to visit her store and learn about handling, feeding, cage cleaning, etc. for at least six months before she would sell you a bird. Best thing ever. I’ve run across so much bad advice of the 30 years I’ve had a flock that I could probably write a book. When I first got my baby lovebird on the 2 week of having him. He started having discharge out of his nose. I read to wait about a month until bringing a baby bird to a vet due stress. So I was conflicted about what to do. I contacted the breeder for help. He told me to just use a humidifier and that a truly sick bird just lie listless on the cage floor. Which I knew was a severe symptom of illness. but I also read birds hide their illnesses really well so any symptoms of illness should be taken seriously. So I took him to the vet and fortunately everything was fine but I didn’t want to risk losing him.

birds don't specifically "need" a sleeper cage... but if you wanted to do one, eg if your main cage is in a room that's always brightly lit and people are up and active late and so on... it's not really different than a normal cage. food, water, toys, perches, etc. it needs to be a place they can enjoy being.

I've heard this one too, I can't even imagine. I've put my grey in his cage after a bite but only to clean up my bloody wound. After I'm done, I always go back and do a step up with him, so he knows there's no hard feelings and I'm not scared of him for biting.

I love her “thank you”, it’s so adorable the way she says it! 💖 Animals in general (humans included), when in a new environment, learn based on what they experience FIRST. When you’re introducing a bird into your home, it’s a crucial time for them to integrate with you and anyone else in the household as their flock right away, so that they associate YOU with safety and good things. Birds are flock animals, they will instinctively bond with you if you’re the one making their new life easier by introducing them to it in a non-stressful way. Since everything is new, their entire brain is focused on learning this new environment, and they’re more willing to accept stimuli from outside of the cage than they are when they’ve gotten used to the rest of the environment and they associate the cage with that sense of comfort and decompression from the stress of the new place. Since you removed yourself from the equation, now you’ve lost that natural incentive for the bird to interact with you. Any time you don’t spend capitalizing on the newness of the situation is absolutely wasted and you’re going to have an uphill battle later on because you failed to take advantage of that critical window of time.

Thanks for addressing the mixing species thing. I am SO sick and tired of people mixing pets for views!!. I used to rescue domestic pet rats, and the number of people that would take photos of their cats and rats, or dogs and rats....it was always “hes a sweety”, “they’re fine” or “I’m right here” Like you said, it just needs once, and NO, you are not fast enough to stop things going pear shaped, if they do go bad. It’s just so unnecessary....a huge risk you don’t need to take!!

The worst parrot advice I ever got was from my Avian Vet. He told me the best way to handle hormonal aggression was to “ neuter “ my Umbrella Cockatoo. He claimed he had done this successfully in the past. It wasn’t until after my bird died on the surgery table, that he admitted he had only practiced successfully on roosters. This was devastating! It’s been 30years and still cry over the loss of my beautiful Cockatoo.

Hola from Mexico, I have had all my Parrots for 30 years most from 2 months to me hand-feeding them myself. I bought one of your recipe books "Cooking for Birds" and I saw making bread using Jiffy cornmeal in a box, I bought it. To my shock, SHOCK when I read the ingredients and I do read labels for ingredients as I don't want to be eating sugar or other toxic ingredients, Jiffy has 28% SUGAR! There are other things I have read in the this book that I do not agree with based on my massive food research after my Dobermans (6) died of cancer partly eating kibble it destroys the immune system with all their toxic ingredients (I now make homemade food for my fur kids and of course my Parrots) and I am obsessed for my recent rescue of fur clan and I hope with this post, if you read it, take a look at this book and revamp it completely. Just because a vet told you so, they are normally not trained in nutrition coming out of college to any extent whatsoever, unless they further their education in nutrition and even Avian vets. They suggest inappropriate foods for everyone. In Mexico, I am the vet unfortunately, there are no Avian vets here, birds are expendable period. All my Parrots have exceeded their said life spans, I had a 30 year young Cockatiel, just saying. I love your videos, your training is very helpful, but re-look at your recipe books, please.

A recipe for a type of bread is obviously meant as a treat food, something to be given once in a while. It isn’t meant to be given on a daily basis. In moderation as occasional treats, the sugar in the jiffy mix isn’t going to hurt the bird. Not to mention the very small portion size the bird should be eating makes their sugar intake pretty minimal.

Some of these "advice" stories are jaw dropping! Crazy! It also makes me sad that so much bad advice is from pet stores. One time I had a gal trying to sell me nutriberries as a "complete diet." Luckily I knew better and tried educating her that I feed fruits, veggies, and sprouts and couldn't seem to get through to her. On the other hand having worked at a pet store myself I was always a huge advocate of nutrition, health, and enrichment! Even young parakeets I would give fresh chop to them every morning and whoever bought them never needed to try hard to get them to eat good fresh foods! ❤️ And it taught a lot of people that they eat more than "just seed"

I would like to thank the person who was selected in the video with comments about veterinary care and not relying on social media or Dr. Google, and for Jamie's response. Veterinary care costs money, in a similar way to human healthcare - the same equipment, similar tests, similar staff, similar overheads, and (certainly in the UK) the salaries paid are not what the general public seem to think they are. Vets do care about their patients and do not perform unncessary tests just to make a few extra £ or $. Common things are common, therefore that's what will be investigated first, just as would happen if you visited your doctor. Those preliminary investigations, tests and treatment cost money and, as for human patients, there is no guarantee of a diagnosis or successful outcome at that stage. Rather than immediately going for a second opinion because either a diagnosis wasn't made initially ir the treatment wasn't successful, go back to your veterinarian: the next stage of testing/treatment will probably be what the second opinion vet would have done next anyway. Every patient, whether human or animal has unique anatomy and physiology, and will respond individually, unlike a car for example where replacing a part or topping up the oil solves the problem. The increasing number of "attacks" on vets on social media or in person are driving up the levels of stress and poor mental health in the profession: in the UK veterinarians are FOUR times more likely to commit suicide than the general public. Vets are verbally and sometimes physically abused, some have even received death threats, and veterinarians are leaving the profession they love because of this pressure. Veterinarians are happy to answer questions and discuss cases so please, if you need any additional advice for your pet, if you require a more detialed explanation of something, if you find the treatment provided isn't suitable/working, or if you think further investigations may be needed, contact your vet. Lets work together in harmony.

A few weeks ago I got the advice to spray my birds with water to make them stop screaming. I did it a few times and even tho it worked for a moment, it broke my relationship with my birds so I stopped doing that. It took days to regain their trust😓 I'm so glad I found your website. I purchased a cockatiel from a lady a few years ago. She legitimately sold my husband a bag of seeds with bugs and webs in it...she said the birds would eat it and it’s good PROTEIN. HAHAHA NO. Then she told him to get the bird used to us, we had to hold it with a towel against our chest (bad advice from your part 1)...WHICH I’D NEVER DO. Then she clipped the bird without asking which is the second time that’s happened to me purchasing birds. If I would have been there I would’ve known better but my poor hubs did not so he came home with the nasty seeds and terrified bird. Needless to say that store is no longer in business...I did feel like we saved that cockatiel and then we rehomed him to a lovely family with kids who had just lost their sweet bird. Thank goodness for this channel!

11:54 I had a shih tzu and a budgie. Didn't think a little Shih would be the least bit aggressive towards my bird. And one day I wasn't in the room and it ate by budgie. I will feel guilt about this till the day I die; she was such a sweet little bird. I was a kid and had no idea dogs did this especially the really little ones. When I adopted my second budgie the vet had clipped his wings and tail feathers (along with random feathers throughout his body) he dropped like a brick. He had no confidence, finally now with training he finally is hopping to me :)

One of the ‘advise’ I got was from the pet shop I got my darling conure from when I was trying to convert him to pellets was to “only buy coloured pellets otherwise he won’t be interested”. Same pet shop also recommended chaining your birds leg to their stand and or cage.

Hey Jamie, I just got two budgies and I was wondering about how quiet should a room be for them to sleep? I'm worried I make too much noise at night and wake them up accidentally. I also should mention that I do cover their cages at night, which helps in reducing the sound, but as I said before I'm worried that they can still hear everything going on around them and thus not having enough sleep. A vet I went to for my 3 birds . She told me my cockatiel only needs seeds and don’t need vegetables or anything like that. And she said a piece of lettuce a day is all that’s needed .😭 I don’t think I’ll be going there anymore...

The worst parrot advice I got was from my local bird store, who told me that an umbrella cockatoo was a great choice for a first-time bird owner :/. Luckily I didn't listen and got a pionus instead :)

I have a rescue African Grey. day one I let her out now she does not ever want to go in for bed at night. I think for safety she must sleep in there at night. How to get her in at night without forcing anything is the challenge on the regular as she’s new and does not yet have the trust to target etc if it doesn’t suit her.

I had a vet tech tell me that my budgies shouldn’t be on your sfs and pellets. Needless to say when I told my vet that tech now no longer works there. Because I have the most healthiest and tame birds that he has ever seen. He loves that they all do a few tricks thanks to your budgie and training courses.

I didn't get new advice from these two videos but I did understand what I've got right. The worst advice I've gotten was from a vet that used a contraindicated medication to treat a problem. They advertised as an avian vet, but their methods were old and outdated...and deadly. I found the correct vet after an emergency in my same area.

I got my budgie in a rehoming situation and we were told to give her half a cheerio as a treat, while I understand that cheerios aren't terrible there are better options so we changed it.

I can't wait to get another cockatiel and put this into practice. I'll admit all my previous birds (budgies/cockatiels and a GCC) were on mainly seed diets but now I'm going to be a better owner with all the newer knowledge out there.

Please bare in mind that I'm nearly 39. I did a ton of research before I got my GCC in 2013 sadly he died in an accident. We had budgies from birth in the early 80s and my tiel was in 2001

I just wasn't warned about needing to transition the diet. I did a lot of reading and watching videos but somehow missed them until I got my bird home. It only ate millet until I went back and got some of his old food a couple days later.

Currently have a parakeet and conure who see my chihuahua as there big sister. All three of them nap together and just hang out on the couch. They are always being monitored, didn’t think my dog would like the birds to much but is always bringing her toys to them even though they can’t play with any of it.

Funny story. When I was younger I adopted a kitten with serous behavioral issues. With one day of work with him I created a life long bond and convinced him I wasn't a bad human. He also had to stay in my bedroom for a few weeks of quarantine. He wouldn't come out for months.

I just got a rescue cockatiel today. The previous owner said she wants to clip her before I get her, I had to beg her not to. I still see some feathers clipped. I was so angry. I was also given a bag of her seeds so I could transition her to what ever I want to feed her. The bag was mostly sunflower seeds. I cannot imagine having any parrot on that diet for as long as they had her. I was also told good luck outside by one of the kids lol. I asked why, he didn't want to go into a ton of detail. Like they were trying to scare me out of taking her I guess. When I went to get my first birds, it was in a pet store. I was given 0 advice. Not even on food, or cage, or anything. Just what ones do I want. Here they are, have a nice day. I am glad I spent 6 months researching before I even decided on what I wanted, as well as bought all their supplies off Amazon, so I didn't need to spend anymore money at that store than I had to!

I will continue to work on target training with my parakeet... but for now he doesn't get the point. I take him to his first vet appointment soon. When I transfer him to a travel cage I am scared we will undo all the work we have done so far to tame him. I would love advice for transport of a new and un tamed bird. I was given no advice and got to learn on the way with my cockatiel. It was screaming in the evening, so we did put a cloth over the cage. Later we figured to put the cage in a quieter and calmer room to not be bothered with the screaming and it stopped mostly. I think it was a sleep issue. Bad advice I got was from a prospect/flyer where it said seed diet. I just figured it can eat fresh food, so I always kept fruits and vegetables (whatever I felt like) available. Later I discovered diets.

Worst advice for me was that my bird wouldn’t bond with me and would be dangerous without clipping his wings before leaving the breeder and that my Conure would be healthy eating the cockatiel seed that the breeder had been feeding him. I did my research before hand and watched hours and hours of your videos so I knew going in that I was going to feed your seasonal diet and wanted a fully flighted bird. He has now been with us for about 2 months and has a solid recall, has bonded with me and my family and LOVES your seasonal feeding system. He is one happy and confident little bird. ❤️

Our worst advice given was by the pet store: Keep millet spray in the cage all the time for your bird. We brought our GCC home and couldn’t get her to come out of the cage. Fortunately we had watched your videos for weeks before we brought her home so we knew how to work through it and quickly figured out what was wrong. They also had told us to put her in a seed diet but we knew better and immediately came home to make her fresh chop and she has your pellets also.
