This video shares the journey of Omen, a Timneh African Grey who learned to free fly through our Freestyle Flyer's Club Program (freeflight course). You can learn more about the course we offer here: birdtricksstor...
Disclaimer: This is not intended as a "how to" video and we strongly discourage DIY freeflight training without the help of an experienced mentor/trainer.
Telemetry/GPS is not going to be an option for EVERY free flighted parrot, as Omen proves in this video. That's why you TRAINING matters! Never rely on GPS/Telemetry. @@trede1983 I bet!! Poor guy hated the tracker! At first when I heard the name I thought oh no, is Omen, an omen? But then he made it back! Reminded me of my dreams/nightmares where I'm flying and cannot control my wings and can't figure out how to land. So it really made me anxious bc it brought that feeling back. Also loved the slow mo of him flying to your hand. Such a beautiful part of the video. You guys are awesome! Congrats on the awesome fam dude! You've got a beautiful life!

That's awesome! And I'm glad that they were able to stop comparing his flights to the other, more experienced birds. If Omen (excellent name btw) was having fun doing his thing, that's all that matters. He was still being a bird flying in the great outdoors! And he's such a cutie, but can you say willful? Here, let me just rip my tail feather out...

Timneh parrots (Psittacus timneh) used to be considered a sub-species of African Grey, but now they're distinct from the Congo African Grey (Psittacus erithacus). Everyone still refers to them as Timneh African Greys (TAG). :)

How can you tell apart a contact call from a regular squawk? Loved this video!!! I got so nervous when the raven appeared! But Jamie kept so calm. I’d love to be a student of yours someday. It’s just the price tag in the way for now for me. That’s why I’m glad you guys didn’t edit out his comment about it. It shows that you don’t shy away from the truth but instead recognize it for what it is. Love you guys!!! ♥️

I can tell his contact calls apart because of when he uses them. The sounds he makes when he can't see me and he wants to know where I am are his contact calls. It's like knowing when the dog is barking because he's excited vs barking because there's an "intruder" (or car driving by)

He didn't show any signs that it hurt him. A couple of theories: 1 - That feather may have been ready to molt anyway. 2 - Some birds, when "grabbed" by the tail, are able to just kind of jettison feathers in order to get away (kind of like some lizards with their tails) 3 - He just didn't care because he was upset.

I want one of these birds for a companion I understand you don’t like the umbrella cockatoo but I would like your opinion for the one I should get for the best companionship and training ability. I also want to know if I am correct by saying that his diet should consist of some seeds and vegetables a small amount of nut and oats and fruit for training only. I would enjoy your respond even if it’s not a video. I live in Harare Zimbabwe Africa.

This is a plea for help from anyone who offers it. I have a cockatiel. I've had him for about half a year and we were super close, he was very bonded to me and loved receiving scratches or sitting on me. For context before i explain, I keep his cage in my bedroom and he spends most of his time in my room with me. Recently, he was on top of his cage and I tripped on the leg of a nearby stool and by instinct my slammed my hand down to keep from falling. My hand landed on his tail and he tried to pull it away whilst I fell and he couldn't and when I took my hand off he backed up and hissed at me. This was a few weeks ago and he hasn't been the same since. He isn't so scared of me as he is my hands. It breaks my heart and I've been having bad days ever since then. He's very skittish and tries to bite at my hand now. Won't even step up and rarely accepts even treats. I know everyone always says it's harder to regain trust than to gain trust initially. Anyone with advice, I'd appreciate it greatly. I'm so upset.

Parrot IQ is quite high compared to other birds. He has intelligence. Parrot's IQ is about 30 degrees. It's being speculated and it's similar to human intelligence by two to three years old. In the case of a large parrot with an IQ, it's a five-year-old child's It's comparable, so it's very intelligent.

Why telemetry in a place like that? There’s literally no other place to land safely on, other than daddy!
@trede1983
@trede1983 3 жыл бұрын
If your bird gets pushed away by the wind or chased by a raven or just doesn't turn around and goes out of sight, you want telemetry. Using it in a place like that (either of the two flight locations in the video) is definitely useful. The locations were scouted and chosen to help minimize risk, telemetry/gps just adds another layer of safety. Clearly, though, training is most important. :)
@andream.464
@andream.464 3 жыл бұрын
@@trede1983 well, when the wind is that hard (were talking big birds here!), birds shouldn’t fly. Parrots in general stay close to the owner, unless chased by a predator (unlikely in that environment). I never use telemetry because my bird doesn’t allow it, but I would miss it only when in proximity to the woods, or when flying in a suburban area (during lockdown we must adapt).
@trede1983
@trede1983 3 жыл бұрын
@@andream.464 1 - big is a matter of opinion, but most of the birds on this flight trip were 400g and under. Omen is 300g and has a wingspan of ~50cm. A couple of the other student birds were 80g! 2 - Parrots free flying outdoors for the first time might try to stay close to their owner, but lack the flight skills to actually do so (one of the other student birds ended up flying over a mile away due to being chased by wild birds in the area...good thing he had gps on).
