Her songs don't follow the typical formula of mainstream songs. Many people look for easy listening songs that are easy to digest. They don't have the patience for such deep and complex songs.

10 million listeners each month on Spotify isn't really 'underrated', especially for English Indie Folk. It's more than most folk artists. She only hasn't gotten through the US Charts though, but that doesn't really matter when you've won the UK and the rest of Europe (which she did). Probably because Folk resonates less because they got a million country songs in the charts. Also, Birdy's hits get on the radio without any problems. I don't know where you guys listen radio, but here the radio plays sad songs too lol
