Following considerable interest in the Part 1 Slideshow I have agreed to publish this Part 2 which is a continuation showing more photographs from the same collection.
This is a continuation of our Slideshow Video Part 1 which shows just how much Planning and Construction go into providing the Utility Services that we take for granted everyday. These rare photographs allow a historic comparison of how much methods and techniques have changed since 1935. Health and Safety would have had a field day. I would think that in 1935 more emphasis would be on getting the job done than considering the risks involved. I understand that Callender Cables were taken over by Balfour Beatty. It would be nice to receive any Technical Comments from today’s Engineers even if it was just to know that they have viewed and enjoyed this video. I would like to Thank workers from all over the UK who do this cable laying work each and every day none of whom I feel sure receive as much as a Thank You from those customers they diligently serve.

From 1939 to 1945, my late grandfather John "Jack" Lewis was the Chief Time and Motion Engineer for engine parts sub-contractor Willmott Breeden. I understand that he spent much of the war working at RAF Castle Bromwich (instead of at the company's Hay Mills factory) ensuring the timely delivery and installation of the said engine parts in Spitfire fighters. Jack and my late grandmother Daisy lived at 47 Cranes Park Road, Sheldon. Most of their back garden included Callender paving stones. Now I know where he got them from! But I still don't know exactly what Callender was doing at Water Orton Lane - though I will guess it had something to do with power supply back-up. Jack was born in Smethwick in 1903; he attended King Edward's School for Boys, Aston; he started at Wilmott Breeden in about 1934; was made Chief Time and Motion Engineer in about 1936; retired from Wilmott Breeden in the autumn of 1969 (still as Chief TME); and he died from heart failure in February 1970. I can remember that sad time as though it were only yesterday. I will always remember my late grandfather Jack with the deepest fondness, love and never-ending affection - and I will never forget our last summer together in 1969.
