Birthday Rock Hunt in the South Dakota Badlands! Amazing Chalcedony, Prairie Agates, and Fossils!

In this one, we kick off one awesome trip to South Dakota to rockhound for my birthday! To kick this series off, we head over to the badlands outside of Rapid City(to clarify, I am NOT talking about "Badlands National Park; collecting in National Parks is HIGHLY ILLEGAL!) to hunt for amazing treasures! This area is absolutely loaded with phenomenal prairie agates, chalcedony formations including chalcedony roses, petrified wood, jasper, and as if that was not enough, it sits atop the amazing Fox Hills formation where abundant Baculites, Ammonites, and Clam fossils can be found! We found some amazing treasures! After that, we head out to my favorite place on Earth, The Rock Shed in Keystone to do some shopping!

How fun to see you find the petrified wood that we used in the ID podcast. It's crazy how different they are from all over the country/world. The chalcedony roses are so cool and love those prairie agates. I have totally violated the 'don't clean your rocks in a hotel bathroom'. That calcite vug in the fossil was such a cool surprise. Alexis's purple agate was another incredible find, looks like you had a really good birthday trip.

It was a wonderful trip for sure!😄 and we have two more hunts to go! I love seeing the petrified wood over there; it is just astronomically different from the stuff we have in Montana. That purple agate maybe takes the prize for me😁 we were SOOO not expecting that! And man oh man i cant wait to show you all the inside of those prairie agates; the look RADICALLY different on the inside when compared to their rinds😁

I was in the badlands last year and found this flatish seam chalcedony all over the ground. Some as big as 12x12x1 or 2 inches thick. Fluoresced green in color. There must have been millions of these chunks all over. They rang like a bell when struck together. They were 7 Mohs.

Trying to plan a trip out west for next year...wanting to rock hound along the way...are there any books available that tell you where public areas are, where picking is aloud and what to look for...rules and regulations...thanks for another great video! Great question and honestly i am not entirely sure😅 most states have a corresponding rockhounding book that is filled with sites and most collecting regulations can be found online; the Falcon guide's books have been a massive asset for me when rockhounding, they are filled with good sites and directions to them and usually include information on the dos and donts for that state, i only own the wyoming, montana, utah, and south dakota books but id assume they have more for other states!😄 i am sorry i cant give more helpful information😅

Happy Birthday Theo.... I live in South Dakota and if you get a chance go to the Tripp county area. There’s a lot of banded prairie agates in all sorts of colors. They can range from couple ounces to 15....20 pounds. Once I get settled in Texas I’ll send you a big banded prairie agate. Also there lots of burl pet wood there.

Fox Hills formation is bing featured in the new jurassic world evolution game and theories abound as to what asset could come out of it... are there any mesozoic reptiles, flying, marine, or terrestrial, that have come out of it??

Oh yeah!😄 the fox hills is part of what is referred to as the western interior seaway, and was a vast shallow warm water ocean during the cretaceous period. It was home to an immense variety of reptiles like mosasaurs, plesiosaurs, and pliosaurs as well as enormous turtles like archelon, and sone of the craziest fish ever to live like xiphactinus so it being featured in a game is actually extremely exciting!😁 im definitely going to have to check that out!
