I’m Filipino and I actually hate that the birthday celebrant is the one who treats everyone. I’m glad that me and my friends don’t really practice this. If someone does treat the group (birthday or not), it’s voluntary.

celabrating birthday in our culture as i understand is a celebration of thanksgiving for adding another year to our life, so we treat people to share our happiness , happy for giving us another year to live.

hmn...I get what you mean. Especially if you get forced into it. Better get new friends but as you said, you and your friends dont practice such a thing. So basically, madaming nakapaligid sayo na hindi voluntary yong paglilibre sa bday? Aside from your friends. Saklap.
@muffins1653 Жыл бұрын
@@ronniejay296 oh true. though I rarely celebrate my birthdays (maybe its an effect of getting older or maybe the bills lol or both) after my dad died. I've never remembered taking out my own money in treating my friends during my birthdays. But I do it willingly for my family hehehe since they are the ones with me through thick and thin. Manlilibre naman ako sa mga friends ko once in a blue moon but birthdays? Nah. Also, I only have few friends. The older you get, the more you sift through them and keep ones who keeps your sanity intact and more towards God.

Pinas has the most freeloading "tradition" on birthdays. We sort of pass along the misfortune of treating the entire barkada because we fell victim to it last year. Basically this year we get revenge on everyone we treated last year.
@josephzabala6957 Жыл бұрын
In my opinion, I would be careful in throwing around words or conclusions without a nuanced understanding and analysis of the matter or the culture itself. I agree there might be unequal relationships to this kind of practice but, still, it varies. Gifting relations in SEAsia, particularly in Philippine culture and society is much more complex, which I think should be noted when poblematizing such topic.
@BonifacioMarioJrPena Жыл бұрын
@@josephzabala6957 if the person is of the culture he's criticizing, it matters little if he/she's talking about his own personal experience and is generalizing. His opinion is valid by default by virtue of being of the culture.... Regardless of how much we might disagree with him. Otherwise we end up giving too much importance to "experts" vs actual lived experience.

i never felt the need or pressure to treat my friends on my birthday. u just need to find better friends.
@locksmith3208 Жыл бұрын
@@BonifacioMarioJrPena I get where the concern of @Joseph Zabala is coming from. I mean, how did the main commentor come up that Filipinos have the most 'free loading birthday tradition' in the world? Are there established studies to support it? Did he himself do a cross-cultural analysis or comparative studies of each birthday traditions in every culture worldwide? It might be true to his lived experience but it doesn’t mean its true for everyone. Using "most" is like declaring something as final and without enough support of the claim is merely essensialising a group of people, which is harmful. For a long time, colonizers have pushed this idea that we are a nation of uncivilized, backwards and savages that's why we have to be careful in concluding something about ourselves. It might be used against us. Indeed, scientific method or any rigorous academic processes are not absolute but historically it has been deemed fruitful in proving theories and ideas.
@CLSdelaC Жыл бұрын
Personally, I wouldn't call it free loading as the dynamics can vary depending on the relationship you have with people and how reciprocal this practice might be. For instance, in other countries wherein the cultural norms is that the celebrant is usually suprised by family and friends with celebratory arrangements, or organize the party with the celebrant and all participants together, then once that family/friend turn comes you do that very same thing for them; hence, even in the cultural norm of celebrants treating out their friends and family, you likely would expect them to reciprocate it once their own birthday comes up. P.S. I'm baffled as to why this comment using the description "freeloading" (not picking a fight, just observing it generally has a negative connotation) doesn't have people picking a fight like they do in my neutral comment stating an observation (which can be statistically verified in fact) above.

One reason why Filipinos like throwing birthday parties is that, it is our one way of showing our pasasalamat to other people for their love, support, company and guidance that they've been poured to us throughout the year 💛

hindi naman lahat, pero karamihan nga ganun..but it works both ways. if you have a circle of friends that you treat during your birthdays, that means they can be expected to treat you on their birthdays as well. if you have 5 friends and you treat them once a year during your birthdays, then you're in for 5 birthday treats a year, di ka lugi. Nature tlaga ng krmihan ng pinoys ganun nagpapalibre pag birthday bcoz partly we believe that it is a time to celebrate and reason to share your blessings. If you're a true friend you won't force your friend to treat just bcoz it's your bday. It still depends on the current situation and the kind of friends you have. In fairness to other Pinoys, they do have a tendency to want to be treated but they also know how to give gifts to the bday celebrator. Sensitivity is the key 🗝️🔑

In Australia, if we go out say in a restaurant, we pay for the one who is having a birthday. Or if we just do it at home to celebrate a birthday, we invite friends & relatives- they normally ask what do you want us to bring ( food). In that way, it will not be too much preparation on the part of the birthday Celebrant . Yun lang

I also went to Australia for a vacation. Though they didn't ask me to contribute to the birthday food or father's day celeb. I bought cakes for them since they invited me to stay in their house & they're my childhood/family friends here. Plus I really wanted to give them cakes for anniversary/father's day,bday, flowers, that's how I feel, at least if u can get them something for their bday even if it's not expensive it feels good to give as long as u're sincere & they never asked me to buy something or give something. Different story in the Philippines, in the Philippines is they pressure u to treat everybody & some would complain on how cheap it is or will say, that's it? Or they wont go anymore because u don't have food ready for them. Although I have a few friends who will come regardless if u have food prepared or not, still buys u food since they know u aren't financially doing good, but they are like very rare. So stick to these people coz u know they will be there for u, when u are at rock bottom. In a way, this help u see who's real and who's not.

Sa US, isang ninong at ninang lang para pair ( godparents) kasi nga they’re like the second parent of the kid. Sa Pinas naman, paramihan. And to be honest, ang napansin ko lang, ang basis nalang sa mga ninong at ninong ay para maraming agináldo sa pasko. 😂

Buti na lang, d na ako naging ninang sa kasal hahahaha. Kasi kapag need nila ng Pera at d ko na mabigyan in d future dahil Wala din Ako budget magagalit sakin.
