Wonderful to see these magnificent beasts being perpetuated and the bloodlines kept intact. One of the most disturbing statistics that I've ever come across in my life was this: in 1800, it was estimated that there were over 100 million bison in North America.....by 1900, there were less than 10,000. Blessings on each and every person that worked over the years to keep these animals from extinction.

I've worked with Buffs quite a bit, people make the mistake of thinking about them same as they would cows. Think about 'em more like sheep.....they behave more like sheep in that their herd instinct is far above a cows more in line with sheep. That being said they work the best when worked as a group. Get some of the cows in with him and encourage them gently to go through the chute. Once one goes down the alley they will all go, then just cut off which one you need to weigh. Anytime you separate just one he will panic and pitch a fit.

Don't know if you have tried this. But we have done this with horses and cattle that don't go through handle systems that well. Leave the alley and head gate open. Put some cubes in alley way so he has to walk in a ways. Put Big Joe into the squeeze pen. Then just everybody walk away. Let him go through the alley on his own time. Leave water at the end for him. You may have to do it a couple of times. If Big Joe finds there is nothing wrong going through the alley to a reward he hopefully will go through when people are there. You might let him go through with people there a time or two then catch him. Just a though.

Couple thoughts fwiw. You've conditioned him to interact with cubes try a trail of cubes to lead him through the gateway to lock him into the system. Destresses and directs him without Pressure and would calm him when you give him breathing room. Looking forward from Big Joe's perspective it looks like a wall, he doesn't see the way thru n he is lookin to escape. Taking the blackout at the end before he turns into the system by the load out end would orient him the right direction so you can close up behind him. Great Videos!!

I only know cattle not bison, but I think the same rules would apply as a starter: 1 Use the right tools. If the animal can break the kit, it’s not the right tool. Dangerous to you and them. No saving is worth it and once they have broken out, they’ll always think they can even if you make it secure. You’ve just taught him the way out is to break the gate. 2 Keep it low stress / think Temple Grandin. Others have made the points and they are all important and most importantly I think you are dong a great job of staying calm and quiet, but second to that I’d say keep him with his mates, especially the quietest ones and to start with. Next I would say the shadows, flapping sheeting and open backing gate are particularly holding you back. Let him go through as slowly as he wants if you need to, even if it just means leaving them in there on their own with the squeeze open to find their own way out, ideally with something nice to eat when they come out of the squeeze. Especially the first time, they always remember. Sounds a lot, but saves so much time, stress and damage in the long run. Good luck

There's basically no animal that likes to be on their own when herded, in my experience. Every time you isolate one your job becomes a LOT more difficult, so I agree on not doing it unless you really have to. Edit: Depending on the animal it can be well nigh impossible. I agree on heavier duty stuff too, I think you can see and hear how light it is, sheep grade fine, with cattle it would always be at the back of my mind that I can't let things get too agitated. I've worked with both good and bad systems, fortunately mostly with quite nice-tempered cattle and sheep that weren't crazy jumpers.

I am 72 and have dealt with Bison since I was about 6, learning on the farm/ranch I grew up on. I would add to numerous comments here about "positive reinforcements" with "use concrete posts." Get some 6 to 8" PVC pipe, bury it in a good posthole, then fill it with concrete. You can put hinges in while the concrete is not in yet, bolts, anything you need. Steel is like putty to these big bulls. Practice incremental moves, part way, give food rewards, back off, let the animal be alone, de-conditioned to the stimulus, since you are trying too big a bite up front here. Baby steps? Shape the behavior you want.

Temple Grandin could tell you what could help. You know she redesigned cattle processing equipment (the whole set up) to promote more humane treatment & less loss of life & less injuries to cattle across the whole industry. Look up her work & you'll find helpful info to understand how the animal thinks & processes these situations.

notice he doesn't try to get thru the blackout areas.. so blackout the gates. 2nd, put some food into the path you want him to take. the chute you want him to enter has no outlet visible to him. no one wanted to enter a blind alley. also tie your gates open so they don't swing. the animal sees that as something coming after them. shy away from movement, if you fed them near the entrance to the chute they would start thinking of it as a food source. not a trap

I have seen at a couple of wildlife centers in Europe where they have large Bison and water Buffalo they use a squirt from a large CO2 canister (or fire extinguisher) when they want to corral them and just rattling the feed bucket doesn't work. Probably not best used in a confined area but seems to work in a field very well as they just move away from the noise and the cloud of gas.

Not shure he likes the fabric moving or just no being able to see. You might put some short sections near the feed and water troughs. Later you might put a two foot high walkway next to the alley so the can hear and see someone going forward. A bit more lead than just push. A cow he knows that works well might go first to show it actually goes somewhere. Ideas only. I have never worked bison.

Every point of our facility can handle a full change from our biggest animals. That's what it takes for your safety. I generally don't single any animals out they get worked up really fast when on their own. Good luck with everything.
