Two other Steve Vai songs to check out are "For The Love Of God" & "Knappsack". He made Knappsack after shoulder surgery on his right arm & surgery on his left thumb due to carpal tunnel. Doctors told him to take it easy & let them heal. Knappsack is his idea of taking it easy...

I'm a 52yr old Scottish bloke. I started learning guitar when I was 16. I made the mistake of being self taught, and undiagnosed ADHD, lol. I'm nowhere near as good as I should be, but the flame is there. I started my journey on the guitar when Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, SRV, Eric Johnson etc were all active making albums and touring. I'm also a HUGE stoner. The day I was introduced to Steve Vai, I was on my lunch break from work. I only intended to kill time, but I ended up going into the only specialist CD store in town the day Passion & Warfare was released. It was blasting over the in-store speakers. I was mesmerised. It worked on me. I bought a CD I hadn't planned on buying. That said, when I got home, and started listening properly, it took me a LONG time before I could come to an opinion on it. I could tell it was HIGHLY technical, but it felt overly-flashy. It sat on the shelf for a while, but as I gradually gave it another go, it began to click with me. I LOVE flashy players like this in small doses, and only when I'm in the mood for them. This is the first time I've heard this song, or seen his Hydra triple neck guitar. To me, it looks like a Piezo under-saddle pickup on the top neck to get that acoustic strum sound. Hybrid guitars are BAD ASS. They're regular electric, with regular pickups, AND a pickup hidden under the bridge or saddle. Notice the partial frets too. After what looks like the 12th, it becomes fretless. To play fretless, requires VERY precise fretwork. The middle neck is regular Steve Vai country, in a fancy suit. The bass on the bottom neck is likely in an Open tuning. This allows for easier single-handed drone notes. A double neck, or triple neck guitar is a WONDERFUL stage instrument, but it's also a trade-off. Each neck adds to the overall weight of the instrument across your shoulder and back; even worse.....it adds weight to the SAME side, making it unbalanced, where you need to use your fret hand to hold it level while you play. Your fret hand should be completely free. It's not comfortable to play for long periods. It only has one real benefit, but you may or may not need that. If you have one guitar player, and the song requires a very quick change between electric / acoustic / 12 string guitars, this is the perfect solution. In the studio you have time to switch guitars. You have the freedom to choose whichever guitars work best for the part. You find your own position, with your arms and elbows, the angle you hold your guitar at, where your hands naturally rest etc. This is thrown off with a double or triple neck. You're over-extended to reach the bottom neck, and tightened up when playing the top neck.

Steve Vai is one of the few men in the world who is considered a GOD of the guitar and it is not for less, the way of playing is inhuman, it is beyond comprehension. The Hydra is not a musical instrument, it is rather a machine that only he is worthy of playing, just like Thor's fucking hammer only he is worth touching, so is Steve Vai's Hydra.

Steve Vai is legendary. Now that you've jumped down this rabbit hole, there is a large catalog of players out there that will inspire you and, frankly, the music industry ignores them for the most part. "Something out of a science-fiction novel, “The Hydra” is a triple neck instrument with a steampunk aesthetic, and it has details that would leave even Michael Angelo Batio speechless. The guitar features a top neck 12 strings - half fretless, a middle 7-string neck, a bottom that’s a half fretless bass, a 13-string harp, a “Seducer,” a “Dragonizer,” a “Climax Regulator,” an ethernet 4-way output, and a plethora of switches, controls, and gauges." - hypebeast Seriously check out For The Love God. Reaction or not. The song is gorgeous. There's his official "2021 Upscaled Version" video on his channel and plenty of live versions, one with an orchestra which imo should be listened to after the original. i've been playing for 15 years. the key is not practice to reach those levels, or think if u cant reach that lvl better let your guitar as decoration. the key, the reason you do is the fun the joy for the music, to stay constantly growing. to reach in the years levels you never thought when u started, but at the same time keep in mind what said before. that's how i feel

and if i may add (20 years experience), don't be afraid to do things your own way, find your own style and techniques...some people's hands are naturally/physically more able to do certain things better. in my case i found fingerstyle and mastering open strings and shredding in a vertical instead of horizontal method easier for me.

Good one Biss! I assume since you started playing guitar you notice certain techniques guitarists use that you didn't see before, like muting and stuff? you already noticed the scratching. If you do plan on watching more of him, I'd say Tender Surrender(live) or Bad Horsie (harmony hut version) are really good ones. Tender Surrender is something that starts off smooth and progresses, while bad horsie is heavy and groovy at all times. 'Knappsack' to have your mind blown ( he had a broken right shoulder so he played only with his left hand ) 'For the love of god' is another classic.
