This is a old school strat. 7th probe pylon + double gate is a great counter for the usual 8th probe + gate + cybernetics . That's why in the oldschool games you rarely went 1gate tech in pvp.

What makes a manner pylon so obnoxious is that it not only traps workers, but workers that aren't trapped but still want to mine from the blocked-off mineral patches have to take the long way around. It wastes movement time and happens automatically. Look at 3:33 . Pokju isn't moving his probes there on purpose; the probes just want to mine from those mineral patches and are taking the fastest route there (behind the mineral patches and between the gateways)

Back in the day, some of the commentators made the point that while trapping workers with manner pylons was useful, the biggest effect on the economy was denying mining to two patches. You will sometimes see that even if no workers are trapped at all, one or two will be dedicated to attacking the pylon, so clearly the defending player believes this too. But I hadn't thought about the extra micro required to keep your workers mining efficiently. Pokju should have been able to handle this, but evidently he was not--his second zealot was very late, his probes were not behaving, and his first zealot got trapped. And his second zealot was standing idle by a pylon for like 10 seconds while his first zealot and probes were dying. I think with good micro, the defending player should always beat this silly rush. But it was definitely a great way to confound Pokju and force errors. It's the sort of build that only works once.

I don't see why Pokju had to bother with the first pylon. There weren't enough probes to be using those two mineral patches in the first place, so if he just did the same build order that Bisu did and micro'd, he should have won that battle and then been able to take the win because there should have been a mineral advantage (initially) to Pokju because of the one probe that Bisu sacrificed. Pokju should have had an advantage too with probes right there to battle zealots with his own zealots.

This game actually made the "unpimpest play" on the newly released 2007 Pimpest Plays list. Apparently, reacting suboptimally to a brilliant cheese is right up there with trapping your own units while proxying. Interesting fact: Pokju quit SC after this game.

Yea, I think chasing the probe around would've been good. Using more probes to kill the pylons would've also worked.

Bisu is well known for his excellent probe control, its not likely that pokju would have been able to kill it anyway...also, if you care to notice, the red probe does take a couple hits, you can see its shield flare

smeagle would have been wise to try and kill that probe after it built gateways just before it could build the additional pylon to support the gateways after he killed the first pylon. that would have probably given smeagle the game. what else can you do to counter this tactic?

LOL, Pakju deff panicked - he could have gone forge, one cannon in the mineral line and been just fine, while costing Bisu 500 mins, than use the forge for upgrades to justify the cost even better... panic if the worst ! :) But regardless, that was very pimp by Bisu! I miss watching him.

It's from 'proximity', which is the relative distance of one object to another - so basically, a proxy Gateway is a Gateway that is close(r) to the opponent, meaning not in your own base but somewhere sneaky. Proxying directly in your own base without even hiding it from your opponent belies incredible skill. By the way, Pokju stopped playing professional Starcraft after this... which is both very harsh and very funny.

stick a probe right in the spot where the manner pylon goes as soon as you see the early scouting probe, and then put an anti-manner pylon pylon up. The hardest thing is that with that manner pylon you actually have less resources than your opponent, if they were equal he could have fended it off

But in this video there isn't such thing. His probe is right between like 10+ enemy probes. He won't have such a problem killing it. If it hits and run you simply send two probes and it won't be around here for a while to build buildings. Or if it goes near his base he simply sends 1-2 probes for contra to kill it.

Tough indeed. I think the only counter would have been building the gateway first, seeing that the proxy was going to happen. However he threw his pylon down slightly after Bisu's so he was already too late. A forge I dont think would have helped, since a zealot would have been up before a cannon.

Nah that wasnt Bisu, that was BeSt and the inside base rush was a semi-failure. Stork did screw up BeSt's build order with it and topped it off with a gas steal

I can't play SC like that, but try me in EleTD. ;) Ok, here is my theorycraft: Pokju should have been able to kill all Zealots in his base with a combo of Zeals and Probes. Then he should be the one with Zealots in his own base, attacking Pylons with them. He would get into an eco disadvantage by attacking with probes, but bisu would loose 500 minerals in buildings. 500 > eco loss? Did I miss something?

@GOSUPitZ I believe they can put down a pylon under their minerals, second gateway and a battery, while Bisu is microing with a single probe. For Pokju it could have been a way to type "gg" 2 minutes later while dying not so horribly.

I was waiting for Pokju to place a pylon or probe above the mineral line to block the second gateway, and then for Pokju to commit 4-5 probes to killing the second pylon after letting both get placed...but he did neither and guaranteed he would be behind in his zealot count to Bisu.

to the commentator: this is called "Doom Gating" not a "proxy gateway" a proxy/ cheese gateway would be somewhere the opponent cannot see it then finds out how close it is to their base.

if he pulls all his probes, he is no longer mining. so he will have no mineral intake while bisu is still mining. if all the probes attack, bisu will just continue to make pylons forcing pokji to commit all his probes to kill the pylons. Bisu can prty much spam pylons and cancel them before they die so bisu doesnt lose the money while pokju will have no mineral intake. and the moment a zealot comes out, its gg

they're probes, it would have taken him at least 30-60 seconds to take that pylon down. In the meantime bisu would have been mining steadily and have gotten a big advantage. The only thing he could have done that "might" have stopped bisu "that would seem reasonable at the time". if he didn't send all his probes to fight bisu's zealots pokju might have been able to keep up. Still no guarentees. In the end Bisu played him like a guitar.

You either haven't played starcraft in a long time or don't worker rush much. 9 probes can knock down a pylon that was just laid down in a few seconds, not 30-60. If worker's attacks were that weak no one would worker rush. Pokju was screwed the moment the first zealot came out. You mentioned earlier that probes would take 60 seconds to kill a pylon. by an extension of logic they'd take 2-3 times as long to kill a gateway. if they just kept mining, they would have just all died anyway.
