Yes! A new video, thank you! You always manage to cover the most obscure stuff and provide such good information with a good dose of humour. Keep it up!

it would be awesome if someone could offer Gamate games to be purchased digitally while having all of the games released for it. in general do like these portable systems like the Megaduck, the Supervision and of course the Gamate because they do seem to have decent games that can be pretty fun.
@ReplayRetro6 жыл бұрын
Sadly not all the games have even been backed up yet, but those that have been are supported by MESS & MAME so if you really want to check them out you can do, and you won't get a blurry screen either! hooray!
@Mr.madmight2666 жыл бұрын
Indeed, hooray for emulation and game preservation, too bad Nintendo has been taking down rom sites though. anyways, i hope to see more stuff in this channel.

Those games don't actually look to bad. I don't think I would have been disappointed by the system at the time.
@ReplayRetro6 жыл бұрын
No in all fairness they're on a par with at least a lot of GameBoy filler material, i've definitely played worse, and from what i've heard there are some genuinely great games for it too which i need to track down
@LukasMathis5 жыл бұрын
I had one of these as a kid (they were sold by a major retailer in Switzerland, and both the console and the games were a third of the cost of their Nintendo equivalents at the time), and yeah, I wasn't disappointed. Even back then, it was clear that the games weren't on par with the best stuff available on the Game Boy, but there were some really nice games. I played a ton of Galaxy Invaders (imo one of the better portable Galaxian clones), Dino Ball (weird pinball physics FTW), Snowman Legend, and Money Maze (Pac-Man with elevators). There were also a lot of bad, and just overly ambitious games. Kung Fu Fighter was terrible, but on the other hand, the Game Boy didn't have a good Street Fighter clone, either. Myth of Asamia was hilariously bad, and it often wasn't clear if the game was glitching or supposed to work like that, but I played it a lot, just to see what would happen. Time Warrior could have been great, but was unplayably hard. I do think that these LCD screens degrade over time, and both the Game Boy and the Gamate looked less blurry back in the 90s, though the Game Boy had the better screen even back then. Like ReplayRetro says, the crunchy sound really grows on you; I think it sounds amazing. The console itself feels good to play, and the buttons and d-pad might not be quite Nintendo quality, but they're more than good enough. In the end, I loved that system as a kid, and have lots of memories playing it for hours and hours.

Another good one Matt, I must be getting old I remember seeing them in the high street

Thanks glad you liked it, sorry if I made you feel old, but it could be worse

Not a bad console really, as you said, it's the lack of games. Btw, I like your sense of humor!

Yeah seems a shame really, like it never got a fair shot, imagine if this had gotten pokemon, how different things might be! Lol

Very nicely researched Matt. The only thing I knew about this system was that it existed.

Thanks Mr B, there were some other bits I left out but I wasn't happy with how little I could find to substantiate them, I was evergreen tempted to leave out the stuff about the processor as it seemed a little off but wanted some specs info to include

Underrated console. The games have horrible ghosting though, so I'd recommend emulating it. Though that's not the simplest thing to do.

Cube up should,ve be the killer app for this system as tetris became very popular evertrough it’s a weird name for a tetris clone, other systems tryed the same thing such as the supervision with the game falling blocks,but falled ironically either too, And while thinking about it it,,you can come up with many tetris clones under different names based on different situations in that game such as, wall/block busters,wall/block/ destroyer,wall/block breaker,wall/block build up,wall/block blaster,block stacker,block rotator and wall/block cruncher,wall colapsing,crashing blocks etc,,, Same thing could be done with mario copy clones such as supermario walking,super mario hitting,supermario jumping,supermario swimming,supermario flying etc,,, And so on and so on, But some magically how it just couldn’t cash in on the tetris craze or whatever crazyness their was at the time. Or come up with sonic copy clones such as sonic rolling,sonic running,sonic spin,sonic jumping,sonic hitting etc,,,

Oh wow that's bad. Pretty cool piece of gaming history though.
@ReplayRetro6 жыл бұрын
it's not really that bad, i hope it didn't come across as such in the video, its a competent budget system for the time with some enjoyable games

really sorry for the late reply and I just finished watching this an hour ago and enjoyed it a lot like before! I live in northeastern China and I remembered this when I was a kid back in the days, probably ever saw this in a toy store, also Super A'Can you've mentioned in the video, but it had the same fate cuz no one gave these a shxt while nintendo and sega clone systems with pirate multicarts dominated the gaming market in mainland of China until PC and mobile games came out. Mega Duck didn't even march to northeastern China I have to say, and till now I still call it Cougar Boy because of the stupid original name lol. btw, about Super A'Can, if you're not a fan of board games and strategy games with Traditional Chinese language, you won't like it. there are a lot of those kinda games and it's not worth it unless just for collection. more info... Bit Corp did many multicarts for GB and Famicom, and they're rare... the games on those carts are original but suck axx. the video has been already shared on my vkontakte wall. hope my friends could also enjoy it~! thank you Matt for making good retrogaming videos!!!

Thanks Tempest, it's great that you could provide so much personal background to this one, it's a difficult system to get information on so it's always good to have some anecdotal stuff added. Glad you enjoyed the episode
