I was hazed in the ED. The charge nurses admitted doing things to make me ask for help. I guess because I didn’t need help with the normal amount of patients, they gave me me more patients and more difficult cases basically to make me break. When I did ask for help they wouldn’t do it or told me to ask someone else. It was ridiculous. Otherwise, I excelled in ED. I loved it, I felt smart and challenged in the best ways. But I refused to work in those conditions. One day, I left my badge after my shift and never went back. It was an Ascension hospital 😊

My 1st job was in a burn ICU. I started before I got my license. During the first few days, my preceptor asked me A LOT of questions. He was assessing what I knew. He questioned me about everything, from how to do an assessment to pathophysiology. Then he told me get a notebook (this was before iPads) and take notes. Because he said he would answer a question twice. The third time he would tell me to look it up. He was hard on me. Now, I appreciate him. At the time it was happening, I hated him. Now, the other nurses did haze me. I remember one time in particular. My patient had about ten different IV’S. And I let one run out. Unfortunately, it was a pressor. The patient started crashing and I was up against the wall crying. The other nurses got the patient together. After it was all over. One of my coworkers said,”Don’t be upset. We gave him to you so you could learn how to manage several IV’S. You can’t hurt him. He’s gonna die anyway. I bet you won’t do that again. Ha ha!” I was afraid I’d almost killed the patient. This was a horrible experience. However, my decisions help determine if a patient will live or die. This not the place to coddle someone. It takes a certain amount of intestinal fortitude to be an ICU bedside nurse. Orientation was only twelve weeks. Then you were on your own. One thing my preceptor told me was to know what I knew, don’t be afraid to ask for help and to take it easy on myself. Once, I was pulled to the OB ICU. They put me in triage. The resident told us that she was the doctor and we better not do ANYTHING without an order. Sooo we sat there and waited. There was a bottleneck of patients. One actually delivered in triage! When the head resident came to check on her, she was running around like she was crazy. Meanwhile, we were all sitting at the nurses station. When the head resident asked us what was going on, we told him we were waiting on an order from the doctor at her request. The head resident smiled a little and said he’ll talk to her. After that, we didn’t have any more problems with that resident!! Finally, I think most of what happened to me made me a stronger nurse. I had to become a strong nurse so I could deal with those surgeons. Once the doctors know you know your stuff, they back up and become your colleague.

The best definition of bullying I have found was in a psychology paper. It describes it as withholding resources because the bully doesn't believe the person should have access to those resources. The resource could be many things, access arenas to call out gossip, access to easier patients etc. The resource does not have to be tangible. Based on that, yelling at a person would not be bullying but instead possibly a form a harassment.

I didn't work in the health industry but I did experience a toxic work environment. They bully would withhold resources to help me learn my job better, didn't train me ( I needed to figure it out ), made everyone believe I needed to be "watched," etc..

I’ve gotten to @45:30 in the video. I understand what everyone is saying. And I do appreciate all the different views and stating that “sometimes it’s not bullying but it’s just circumstantial, constructive criticism, being blunt, ect”. However, like Chad said everyone in every job has been the new person…. So I just ask that if you’re a trainer PLEASE remember that! Think before you respond, think about how you’re coming off, think about if the new person is really what is making you lash out or if it’s something else (being over staffed, over worked, jaded, burnt out, personal issues, etc), and think about how often you’re “being blunt” or having an “off day as a human” or also think about do you respond this way to everyone on the unit new or not and/or nurse or not OR is it only a particular nurse/nursing staff. When you’re constantly being “blunt” or having “off days” with the same person it’s is bullying in my opinion. And that’s when it’s not ok to say “you need thicker skin” or “you’re too sensitive” or “that’s just me”. Your behavior is a problem, it’s causing a hostile work environment, and it needs to change, period. We all need to work together and be a team and help each other learn and grow our skills. If there is truly a problem with a team members performance then there’s a time where the manager should be involved and the manager needs to step in to remedy a solution (even if that means that particular person is not going to be a good fit for that unit/hospital/ professional setting). We shouldn’t continue to chastise a person for an extended period of time and say “well they should know this by now so that’s why I’m being blunt and rude and chastising this person”. At the end of the day we all are here to help patients. That’s my rant.

Sorry I missed it. Some units are toxic. As an older nurse, you just don't care what anyone says anymore, but the young, new nurses want to fit in and that's when the bully goes for the jugular. I once confronted a bully (asked to speak to her privately) and said, I heard you said, blah blah blah...she actually apologized and never did it again. Thank you Nurse Liz!!!!!!!!!!

I’ve been following Nurse Liz for a while now and I’m so glad because I’ve learned so much and feel like I’m going to go in knowing that everything you guys talk about I’m going to experience and I will be prepared. Great segment, Nurse Liz. Bullying is one of the reasons that I left nursing. Some of the behaviors of our fellow nurses (a small but toxic minority) would be rendered unemployable if they behaved the way they do to each other in a corporate setting. I worked nights when I was a critical float RN and would start to get stomach and chest pains at about 5 in the morning praying that I would be able to present to the day shift with everything neatly tied in a bow. Nurses at shift change can be subject to snide comments, eye rolls, sighing, - It can sting for days. Bullying does also come in other forms, the pet snitch RN that someone in the comments mentioned. The morning nurse who insists on wiping down the report area DURING report, right after you cleaned the area. The manager who asks you to give up approved vacation dates so one of the pet "beautiful people" can have the travel time with new boyfriend (happened to me. - I had more seniority) . The nurses that also seem to have dibs on the coveted break times, or go on break when they are expecting a new patient. Walking in to the shift, seeing that assignment changed to accommodate nurse of favored status.. The list is endless.

How come female nurses NEVER stand up for the male patients that get mistreated by female nurses. A LOT of female nurses do some WILD things to innocent defenseless unconscious male patients under anesthesia. Most commonly going up to unconscious male patients and lifting their gowns up for NON MEDICAL REASONS but to laugh and gawk and sexually humiliate them then further sexually degrade them by gossiping about their genitals. I had surgery few years ago, woke up in the recovery room with 4 female nurses hovering over me giggling and my gown lifted up to my chest. I kinda sat up a bit, I guess they realized I was starting to come to it, one quick pulled my gown down and the other 3 left the room right away. I had a female nurse tell me once how a local TV anchor had surgery, word spread throughout the unit among the female nurses and female employees. So afterwards while he was still sedated, 30 or so female nurses and female employees took turns going in and lifted his gown up. They thought it was HILARIOUS to sexually degrade him like that. Crazy, NOT ONE had a conscious to stop it or report it???? So as someone who has left and doesn't have to worry about the consequences of exposing female nurses secrets. How often did you see this type of stuff go on with Male patients, especially unconscious Male patients. And why do female nurses just ignore Male patients being sexually assaulted like that?

ER RN here. Calling report to the floor. Charge/Supervisor just happened to be doing something nearby. Gave very polite, complete report. Charge phone rang about halfway through. Overheard Charge saying "Yes...Okay...Oh...Yeah..." After I'd hung up, even wishing the floor nurse a good day, the Supervisor continued "Well, actually, I've been standing next to them during the entire report and... Hello? Hello?" then she turned to me "They hung up!" "That was the Charge from the floor you were calling report to, telling me how rude and unprofessional you were reporting on that patient..."

The bullying is also a result of divide and conquer by Management. Management encouraged their "pets" to snitch off coworkers. If management wanted to play that game then I would always demand to get the complaint in writing, so I would have documentation. Management usually wouldn't comply because they didn't want us finding out , who the snitch was. I also had first hand experience with Management posting our metrics , where everyone on the team could see it. Management would play the game of " if X can meet the metrics, then why can't you". I knew that several people on the team were fudging their numbers , in order to meet the metrics, but I refuse to snitch them off. I figured that it wasn't my job to monitor the performance of my co workers.

Glad to catch the replay- sorry to miss the panel! I appreciate this discussion a lot! I landed in nursing education as a nursing professor because of my passion for teaching students. I believe that good faculty can accompany students on the unit and actually make things easier for nurses and other staff. However, this is a fine balance and needs to be managed with very skilled faculty. As with everything it takes preparation and a good relationship with both the students and the staff. Just my 2 cents❤

Thank you all!!! This is exactly what I needed as far a perspective and how to deal with... Recently, started a new NOC Acute Care ER surge (holding) position and there is a day nurse that has a consistently adversarial attitude during handoff report. for the amount of *scoffing and sighs* this nurse does during report, you would have thought that she had the long night. and wasn't the one coming on. Strong tone and loudness doesn't make her correct. She came from med surge floors to ED Surge as her new dept. It seems coming from Medsurg is where she's expecting it to be beautifully packaged and bow tied for handoff. That is just not the case in the ER and especially ER surge where we can have a high patient turnover (8-14 patients in a night)

Missed the live so I am watching now. I wanted to comment on the student thing. I am an LPN in nursing school and so in clinical I always preface with I am an LPN and have experience and I am there to help. I always tell them to use me to their advantage for help. Although it is stressful to have a student, it can be an asset to have the extra help when staffing is so short. No matter what experience you have, you can always help answer call lights, ambulate, ADL’s etc. I also tell them I would like to do as much as I can, however if you get behind and just need to do something to get it done, by all means, do it.

Female nurses HATE when people bring this up. Because they know it's TRUE. @@kimberlydavis8613 thank you! And that's good! It happens mostly post surgery, so there in surgery units, and PACU a lot too. In ER too a lot, female nurses in a hospital by me would put out a "news flash" they called it. It was code for if a cute guy came through, nurses would look for reasons to see him exposed, and if he was sedated same thing would happen to him as I mentioned in my previous post, female nurses would shuffle in and lift his gown up. Again I could go on and on and on with stories. MANY female nurses do some WILD things to innocent defenseless unconscious Male patients. And even the female nurses who dont do this stuff BUT turn a blind eye anddon't report the ones that do are JUST as complicit, they ABSOLUTELY would report it if it was Male hospital employees doing this to unconscious female patients but they ignore it because its being done to male patients by female nurses. If you ever have sons someday, or already do, just know that these stuff I mentioned probably will happen to them when they have surgery. And you can thank female nurses for creating an environment where its acceptable and even funny to them to sexually assault YOUR unconscious son(s) at hospitals. My preceptor was a passive aggressive bully. Grad RN in Trauma ICU with a preceptor who gave off such bad energy. I felt so much more comfortable working with all the other nurses on the unit, other than her. Sad, because it took away from the experience and chipped away at my confidence at first. On the floor there has definitely been times that i called out for help (at a door right in front of main desk and secretary) and no one came! I couldnt believe it. And trying to make assignments, and be FAIR, leads to major passive aggressive bullying! It sucks. I feel like personality disorders and mental illness run rampant lol.. You really do need a thick skin, however some types of bullying is so unacceptable.

I also hate it when other nurses or upper management micro manages. I work as a nursing supervisor at a LTC center, but I’ve become used to the facility by now. During the 7-3 shift the administrator and DON give me “tasks”. Like Covid test all the staff, make sure rooms have labels, look though patient charts to make sure code status is updated. All this is important, don’t get me wrong! But when I have to deal with an emergency, I don’t want to be called by upper management for menial tasks. It frustrates me and I have to tell them I have to prioritize the current situation. They couldn’t ask the infection control nurse to test the staff? They couldn’t train staff to do their own Covid testing when they enter the facility? They need to find better solutions because I’m only one person.

It’s not that nurses don’t want nursing students. I, myself love student. It’s just more work and a distraction when you are already spread so thin. Having students that are in your face and don’t respect your personal space is also very hard. I have had student interrupt while teaching, give patients wrong advice, feed my NPO patients without asking, and the list goes on. I understand that they need to learn but nurses need to care for their patients and get everything done in a timely fashion and a lot of times we are just in survival mode. If hospitals created a better learning environment for nurse and student then this wouldn’t be an issue.

The administrator at one of the facilities I work at always seems to find a way to scapegoat a staff member when an event unfolds. She can never just accept that something happened and that’s just the way it is. For example: I had 30 residents to give meds and do treatments. One of the residents was drug seeking and kept demanding to get an oxy when the pharmacy hasn’t delivered it yet. We didn’t have any in the ebox. He ended up leaving AMA and was pissed off. The admin blamed ME for this. And she pulls that crap all the time. The resident has the right to be angry and leave AMA. We can only try so hard.

I know already know how much people can suck especially working with a lot of people & I’ve never been the person in the groups just observing and yeah 🙄. I’ve always kept to myself and just do my job as best as I can. But ALL I know is that if you look for me you will find me 🙂. In a very professional way because this isn’t high school anymore and we need to do better for ourselves and for each other 🫶🏻 & I will always stand up for others!!!! Because I will not studying too hard to let anyone belittle me. I’ve worked as a phlebotomist, medical assistant & wound care & with different type of people but I’ve learned to put my foot down and everyone should too. You got this if you have felt bad or bullied at work before 💜

I’m thinking of going back for nursing. Future nursing student here. I don’t think not wanting a student is bullying either. Neither do I think it’s rude. I honestly think nurses should have the choice of training students or not. If I’m a student I don’t want to be under a nurse that does not want me because that would impede on my learning. Also I feel if you are training a student you should not be assigned patients while you are training and you should be able to charge for that as a service. Training a student should be a billable service. For example, nurse training should be able to look at everyone else list patients and say hey can my student and I take this patient and this patient. So basically that nurse has ability to create own schedule for them and their student. In this way they can choose how many patients and best patients that will fit the students learning. This way this nurse is not being stretched thin or slowed down and can focus more on the student learning and student can obtain the best learning experience possible.

I work as Ana agency nurse. The bullying is real. I don't have the protection of a union and find I get phased out. My last time a nurse helped out and started a bolus of normal saline. While doing my rounds I adjemusted the rate down and notified her and then she went to the Director of care saying I questioned her as a nurse and all that stuff that didn't happen and then they started canceling my shifts

Appreciate the segment, but bullying is a targeted and repeated thing. Calling your staff together and yelling or venting frustration isn’t bullying. Having a single encounter out of frustration of rage, annoyance or irritation isn’t bullying. Bullying is almost always person to person or relatively small group to individual person. The bully targets you and goes out of their way to attack or belittle.

The only time I have ever had to go two management, my patient coded. So everyone rushed in. I was the first one doing compressions. Once my time was up, I took a little time out because I was breaking down and crying. I genuinely really care about my patients. I started talking to the intensivist and the other nurses documenting. All of a sudden out of nowhere this respiratory therapist starts accusing me, says basically in simple terms that it's my fault because of the fact that my patient aspirated and I didnt take off the cpap, and left her. prior to The Code, the patient did projectile vomit. There were two other nurses in there, they saw me rip off the CPAP and then she had puked everywhere, walls, mask, me, floor, etc.. The respiratory therapist became super fixated on the puke that was on the CPAP that had been off pulled hours ago. Basically accusing me that that this is why she coded. And making all these weird questions and allegations while we are coding my patient. It did not end well with the code. I lost this patient. It was my very first lost, I was very devastated, I felt very broken, I made such a big human connection with said patient. I would describe the sadness and grief that I felt was very similar to when I lost my first child and it was a huge bloody miscarriage. My tech went to go take a little breather since it was her first time seeing a code that bad. While sitting by the elevator she heard this sad respiratory therapist say that I deserved it, I know what I did, she's going to report me, she doesn't feel sorry for me one bit, that's why she's acting that way. Because she feels bad for her actions. Not only did I stay after with my manager to make sure all my documentation was in. I also told her what had happened, I also acknowledge that during codes, it can be very stressful and people say things they don't mean. But the fact that she belittled me and was questioning me and was berating and making passive aggressive accusations was very unprofessional and inappropriate, during the code with over 10 people in the room. I've been at the hospital for roughly over 4 years, I am the type of person that will try to fix things, or I talk to someone, or I simply ignore it because I don't have time. I'm too busy. I am always the happy go getting person because someone's got to be in this horrible Hellfire of med-surg. But this is the one I had to. Have been crying, I haven't been able to sleep or eat. I'm seeing my psychiatrist and I'm already showing signs of ptsd. I know this will get better, I did not want to report it, but apparently somebody else did. So even if I had kept my mouth shut it was already reported. This was not even a week ago

Scott didn't bully, in my opinion. However, I noticed at my facility, managers tend to defend the younger nurses, are more in tune to their feelings and hyper focused are keeping them happy.

I ended up in the ED once after completely exhausting myself while charge discussed their vacation plans with their peeps. There was also that other time where I was speaking up about issues in an ICU unit to HR. It was put on their radar, however, nothing was done at the time.. until a patient ended up shooting at a nurse and then killing himself. Im still a little upset about that one.

My thoughts on this; 1: don't be a dick. If someone makes a mistake or does something different from how you like, let them know, and the incredibly important step, explain WHY. If you come in and say "you did this wrong and that wrong, and this thing over here wrong" and bite their head off it does not help in any way. Take a breath first. Even if AFTER a potentially critical event and could have turned out really badly. Take that breath and then speak with clarity and thought, not anger or annoyance. Communicate. Make sure they understand why they screwed up, and how to avoid it in the future. Teach, don't punish. Back when I worked as an EMT I had a couple of FTOs that thought their entire job was to be rude and condescending to the people new to the field. I never learned a thing from them, other then what to avoid. When I was at the point where I was the person training the new people, I made sure to have patience and thought before I chewed someone out. I can only remember one time where one of the trainees had made the same serious mistake on a medication for several times in a row. I sat him down and had a real talk with him about how serious this mistake was, that he needed to pay closer attention to it, and that it could get someone killed if done incorrectly. Taking that moment to literally sit down and talk like adults made a real difference. Rather then be terrified about doing something wrong and being attacked for it in the future, he made a concerted effort to do better. Never had that problem again, and I think he became better at his job because of it. Edit: In my opinion, Cal was in the wrong, I would not want to be a new RN under his care. Explain, don't attack. Even 6 months in, explain what they did wrong. Explain, why and why not. If you are a new student, repeat what they said the opening of. "Just to make sure I understand" which is one of my favorite phrases. That ensures that you understand what they want, plus gives them an opportunity to correct or add something. Which can keep you out of trouble as well.

You put all the blame on the victim when the root of the issue is the toxicity that goes with the industry. After my experience in nursing (entered, then immediately left), I wouldn't recommend the field to anyone! They cry about being overworked & stressed, then actively alienate/intimidate new recruits! I have absolutely no sympathy for them!

The managers are no good as well as human resources. Just learn the work, focus on doing a great job and observe the office politics and move around them. Then go home and enjoy your life. Finding a new job doesn't help because people are people no matter where you go and you can't get away from them. Learn to manage yourself. That's my best advice.

Why is this toxic behavior allowed to continue? I honestly wouldn't care if a man or woman took care of me as long as you are not rude to me. You are correct after having my first baby, I didn't care what you see as long as you were pleasant and caring. Most male nurses behave better than woman.

Bullying the doc is totally asinine. In LTC you will find out when you call some docs at night, (they also keep day hours at their own business) they want vitals, etc a bunch of stuff. Yes a ton of extra work. I totally disapprove of getting revenge. I see which wolf you are feeding. For years my mom calls me and my dad too sensitive. Finally after over 10 years of finding out and delving into NPD, I replied So that means you're insensitive? It isn't what is said, but how it is said. I took a woman in a small room to confront her about her work... never again, she almost kicked my ass over a dirty pad. Confront with a clear exit.

Male vs female nurses. This sounds horrible but it's true in general. I've confirmed with other nurses I've worked with of other genders as well. You call report to a male nurse: "Dude, I know *nothing* about this pt! I've been in with an ICU player trying to frump for the past 3 hours and triage brought this pt back to an empty room. I can read the chart for you...?" "Don't worry about it, I'll figure it out. Just send them up". Versus: Perfect report to a female nurse, did all the floor orders that were in before they got a room, rebandaged the injury, fed the pt, changed the bed before they go up, full 1000 yards... "Wait! You **don't know** who their 3rd grade teacher's fiancée was?! And you can't tell me if they prefer Neopolitan to Mint Chocolate Chip?! What the f--- kinda nurse *are* you?! I'm calling the Supervisor! I'm *not* taking that pt!" Not always, not even often, but male nurses seem to be a lot more easy-going than their female counterparts. Don't know what it is, but we gotta realize we're all in this together and we get enough sh-- from pts and family and management and providers and we really don't need it from each other!
