Yes, according to the explanation from the video. You don't need to do anything except when you want to convert your TAO to alpha TAO for more rewards as the staked root TAO reward will continue to reduce

When staking at root you earn tokens from all subnets but is that automatically converted back to TAO or will the staker have to do that?

great question - your alpha will be automatically converted to tao and staked for you on root.
