I don't know. For the weight of the bivy and the tarp, you can get a UL tent, for a price, of course. Thanks for sharing!
@PaulMessner4 жыл бұрын
The sensible man would agree. You are indeed right. A tent is by far the best option for space and weight. Most of the time that’s my choice. I do however love a bivi for that closer to nature feeling. It’s best saved for good weather though. Unfortunately I couldn’t wait for that to test out my new gear 😂
@whatsstefon4 жыл бұрын
As someone who’s not camped with a motorcycle, I’m looking at long term options for an upcoming trip, and this comment makes me consider a small tent. I already have a large tent but riding with that will be comical, if not dangerous. A bivy bag was an option, but a bivy and tarp will likely cost the same as a tent and weigh the same with the added convenience of shelter with room to get dressed or be a little more sheltered from the elements.

@@PaulMessner also with the tarp you can keep the bivvy bag undone slightly so it does not get full of condensation and you can breathe if raining!

I gave up on a tent after my first wild camp, because I felt you could be practically anywhere, once you were all zipped up. I usually use a tarp set out like a ridge tent, but during a storm on a windy moorland hill I ended up with the arrangement you had in the video, after the other way repeatedly blew down.

So, do many folks bother with bivys like this? I can't seem to make it add up, I appreciate that they're small and quick to set up but at 1.1kg, the bivy is the same weight as my Alpkit Soloist and being single skinned, you've the worry of condensation in the bivy... if you then need to carry a tarp as well for added protection, is it actually worth it over a lightweight tent?
@PaulMessner4 жыл бұрын
Your point is very sensible. I would always recommend a tent over a bivi. However I love bivi camping for that closet to nature feeling but the sensible space to weight option will always be a tent in my opinion

I've used a hunka bivy bag and tarp combo a few times in the lakes and Wales but I'm not great at setting the tarp for decent coverage... andI end up having a terrible night. I guess such bags are just more durable than an equivalent weight double wall tent? I was quite surprised when I first discovered how weighty the single skinned shelters were. Thanks for the content though Paul, really enjoy your adventures.
